  1. I think that the train will actually not be much 'cheaper' at all IMO.
  2. I kinda hope it never gets realized because the commuter train and the possible Ft. Jackson defense cuts could completely kill the Columbia Metropolitan Airport and that's not what anybody want's since the airport is apartently completely reversing a 6-year 33% passenger decline.
  3. Construction has begun on the Five Points Waffle House.
  4. Is there a completion date set on the Hyatt hotel?
  5. The McCrory Dollar building is nearing a lease deal with a possible game-changing tenant. Rumor is is that Urban Outfitters will open its first Columbia store there. Also, Something special florist is having a grand opening soon. http://www.thestate.com/2012/06/01/2297711/something-special-on-main.html
  6. Palmetto Center dorms becoming a reality. A developer’s proposal to put some 800 college students in a largely vacant office building on Main Street in downtown Columbia cleared a major hurdle Tuesday night when City Council voted to approve a zoning change for most of downtown. The zoning change would allow the developer to create four-unit apartments within the 21-story Palmetto Center building in the 1400 block of Main Street. Currently, a building in that section of downtown can only have three people living in a common rented space. http://www.thestate.com/2012/05/16/2277784/palmetto-center-dorm-nears-reality.html
  7. Palmetto Center dorms could be OK'd TONIGHT Columbia City Council could give the go-ahead as early as tonight to allow private dorms for college students in the 21-story Palmetto Center along Main Street. The main issue before the seven-member council will be to allow greater densities of people than are currently permitted for office space. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at City Hall at 1737 Main St. http://www.thestate.com/2012/05/15/2276428/council-may-ok-main-street-dorms.html
  8. One space will be a headquarters for M Gourmet and the other space will be an M Grille restaurant. http://www.thestate.com/2012/05/11/2271821/m-corporate-office-opens-in-columbia.html

The renderings for phase 2 have changed quite a bit. The renderings are much better than the original. They now have a phase 2 tab on the canalside website and and a January 2013 completion date set. http://www.canalsidecolumbia.com/phase_ii.php#
  10. What information did you get from the meeting?
  11. Maybe this friday's edition of The State-Shop Around will have information about that.

If they really are moving forward with phase two, are they going to build phase 2A and 2B together or separately?.

  19. I would say the Capitol Center, since the Palmetto Center will be turned into a dormitory. They would just have to move people around in the Capitol Center to accommodate them.
  20. My only concern with the Aflac announcement is that they plan to move all 825 employees under one roof, I am not sure that there is a building downtown that has that much office space available, excluding the Palmetto Center.
  21. Columbia Museum of Art receives almost 600 pieces of contemporary art http://www.thestate.com/2012/04/02/2217304/columbia-museum-receives-almost.html The Columbia Museum of Art will announce today a gift of almost 600 works of art from Dorothy and Herbert Vogel, prominent collectors of contemporary art. The Vogels built a collection of more than 4,500 pieces, and the museum of art is now the second largest repository of the Vogel collection. It trails only the 1,100 pieces held by the National Gallery of Art in Washington. Read more here: http://www.thestate.com/2012/04/02/2217304/columbia-museum-receives-almost.html#storylink=cpy
