Did a little more digging and see Broadleaf is hiring for a new concept called "Shake Party", making "extravagant shakes". I wonder if they'll try to replicate what JoJo's Shake Bar has done in Chicago (which is always packed, probably a good, unique concept for the area):

I found their job posting on reddit for a shift lead for the Shake Party too. Seems like they're trying to get away with paying a shift lead for being a manager.

Broadleaf is "doing a BOB" and re-opening on the westside. Don't really understand how companies change directions so radically, but would be cool to see them fully lean into the beercade concept (they seemed to be fully embracing?) weeks before closing.
Joe
I saw that yesterday too and had to do a double take. I remember reading an article where Jason Spaulding stated they would have had to make double the revenue in that spot to be a viable restaurant/bar. I wonder what this new concept will be. Perhaps @GRDadof3 can use his real estate knowledge to lend some insight into what might be happening with them.

Very cool, but kind of surprising. I would have thought in-building delis in stand-alone, isolated office buildings were an antiquated business model post-Covid.
I was having this same conversation with some friends over the weekend. Perhaps they're banking on the food delivery services/apps and residents of River House to keep them busy.

I believe it was called Death House or something like that. Never went myself but had friends who went to shows there.
Yep, that's the name and the spot. There was a mini-ramp/bowl inside too. Rad little place, was bummed the shows ended.

Founders irregular hours during remodeling:
MLIVE: founders-brewing-temporarily-closing-grand-rapids-kitchen-taproom-during-remodel
It will be interesting to see if this pivot, to offer more refined food, will be received well by the public. Very similar to some of the food options at Bell's.

I wonder how the Standale location is doing? Seems like a better fit out there.

Their primary function is to own Wendy's lol. They have 380 of them. They also picked up franchise rights to Taco John's, they own 4 of them now. Morning Belle is one of their original concepts, they have 3 of them. Before that was Stan's Tacos, Twisted Rooster, Crooked Goose, Wheelhouse, and I think Fajita Republic was them too, but I could be mistaken.
I actually miss Wheelhouse. I thought that concept was a good fit for the arena district. I guess we'll see what's next.

This opens up the Adobe corner for redevelopment.
Wow, surprised to see this. Jeff Boorsma was resistant to soooooo many offers for so long. Curious to see what goes in at the large parcel that Adobe is vacating.

Broadleaf Westside announced today that they’re closing, last day will be January 13th.
While I'm bummed to lose this gem on the Westside, at least it's still available out on 29th Street. I was wondering if things weren't going so well when they stopped being open on Sundays. Weekends were always fairly busy but weekdays were slow.

Almost 10 years ago, I was posting here about actually developing something (instead of just reading about it on UP!) when my wife bought an old pawn shop on the mostly vacant Bridge Street. It was a lot of fun to bring the Clarity Realty offices there and what a ride it has been! We never would have imagined the changes would come as fast as they did and a grocery store across the street sure came as a surprise - I literally dropped my phone the day I read that Meijer was building a place across the street!
It was a lot of fun and we had such great memories there but knew someone would buy it someday. We moved her company out this week (they are moving to a spot on Lake Michigan Drive - not quite as urban but it will still be nice!) and said good bye to our little development project. I don't know the timeframe and probably shouldn't share details (not like I know that many) but there will be a new restaurant in that space in the future. (so this is partial restaurant rumor too) Glad we can still visit the building someday and have dinner.
I remember seeing the transformation from pawn shop to realty office. Good luck at the new spot and thanks for investing on the Westside.

Food truck Street Chef Shaw ("African Inspired Street Food with a Twist") is opening a brick and mortar called Mizizi in the old Rinaldi's space next to Quinn and Tuites in Creston. The grand opening is set for this Friday. I haven't tried the food yet, but i've heard good things about the truck...
Can confirm, the food was delicious! Congrats to them for making the jump to brick and mortar space.

Looks like Founders will be changing its menu come March.
Also, they've added 'blended wine' as an option for the non-beer drinkers out there.

Kind of funny, I was just there Sunday and asked what was going on.. next thing you know, it's on the news.
It's such a cool space. I wish it had a better location, but man. It's worth a drive.
I agree it's such a cool space with a bad location. I've been finding it hard to journey out there when there's one on the Westside.

Not super significant but the Walker Avenue Laundry on Walker and Lincoln across from Dairy Queen has permanently closed. I was told it used to be a 7-Eleven back in the day.
I recently moved to the area, down the street from this location and my hopes are high for something better than a laundromat. I hope that space doesn't stay vacant for long and becomes a coffee shop or something similar.
Yep, that spot was 100% a 7-11 back in the day. It's a strange shaped parcel but a clever developer could make good use of the spot.

The impact on the skyline from the south is dramatic, but honestly it's a little underwhelming from the north. It blends in with the 12 story muddle.
From the west it looks really disconnected from the rest of the skyline, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
This building can be seen from west of the Rivertown Parkway exit on I-196E.

These two buildings, while providing much needed affordable housing, will help push the density previously contained south of I-196 north into the neighborhood.

I don't think Flamingo Room is closed yet. But at $2.1M for the land, I doubt someone will buy it for the bar. Great name though, I'd like to own a dive bar named the Flamingo Room! It'd need an epic neon sign though...
Joe
The 'Dirty Bird' as is it's affectionally known in some circles, is still open. I drove by last night and they were having a big parking lot party with a food tent and tons of motorcycles. As someone that lives a few blocks away from there, I'm looking forward to fewer loud motorcycles pounding through my neighborhood.

Do you have any insight on whether or not they will be serving their and Vivant's beer? Seems like an odd refresh, especially after firing all previous employees, but hope the best for them too.
