  1. Indy has several more full service hotels downtown than Nashville does. Marriott and JW Marriott, Westin, Omni, and the Hyatt are just a few. The ankle biters are not a bad thing, just not everything you need to be as successful as possible. Part of the issue is not having enough corporate business downtown. That would help the ROI of developers considering building here.
  2. While I think there are good points in the article, gathering your local knowledge from someone who already owns two full service hotels downtown and probably does not want the competition is not the most even reporting.
  3. In your world that makes sense. In the real world we need private industry to do their fair share to help us pay for the infrastructure they are using. If they are not paying taxes or creating jobs, etc. then they probably are not going to get preferential treatment. This is not the only issue. Ask the owners of the parking lot, Panera Bread, residents at the Viridian, etc. how this stop effected them negatively. They are not banned from the City just moved from that one location.
  4. its about revenue, its always about revenue. How much revenue does Megabus bring to the City? How much revenue do the tourists and conventioneers generate. Is that responsive enough for you? ps...its not my belief, its THE belief if you haven't noticed....
  5. Do we need a refresher course in the history of the redevelopment of downtown? Without tourism and sports there would NO discussions on this board about the size and scope of the current projects. I wouldn't complain too much about a few little tour guide busses or those transporting hundreds to downtown sights from places like Gaylord. No one is asking Megabus to go away, they are only asking that they become better partners and be more diligent in their safety structure.
  6. A very simple google search of problems with Megabus shows the issues in several different cities. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/28/business/as-boltbus-and-megabus-expand-regulators-call-for-stricter-standards.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0 http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/29/megabus-passengers-steer-bus-to-safety_n_1838822.html http://kut.org/2012/06/mega-problems-for-mega-bus/ and dozens more....
  7. The garage does not empty onto Church, it is the alley behind the building and many folks at the Viridian along with the owners of the parking lot, Panera, and several other close by entities were the ones who registered the complaints that created the move.
  8. Not really and neither did the City, hence Megabus no longer can pickup and drop off at the site reserved for City busses and public transportation. They can no longer block taxpayers ingress and egress into their homes (Viridian) and the riders can no longer use a pay parking lot for a waiting area free of charge. These are just some of the reasons that they are gone.
  9. I like food trucks also but I think it is unfair to let them park right in front of a bricks and mortar restaurant. The City did the right thing.
  10. Yet you are the same people who will beotch and moan if your taxes are raised. You have to pay for stuff somehow and allowing private industry to exist without EVER reciprocating with at least jobs, etc. is not a good way to keep your budget in balance. As long as it helps you, the heck with everyone else I guess.
  11. Airlines pay thousands of dollars in fees to each city they operate in. As do every other type of private for profit transportation companies. Megabus is having similar problems in other municipalities. They also have a terrible safety record.
  12. Megabus was/is totally freeloading folks. They don't spend a dime for anything in our City and use our resources for their profit. Whether you like the competitors or not ( Greyhound) at least they spent money on infrastructure, pay local taxes, put their drivers in local hotel rooms, buy fuel, etc. in Nashville. Why should the City do ANYTHING to help Megabus?
  13. Not trying to be a buzzkill but the South of Broadway plan comes complete with recommendations only. No funding is in place for any of the items they will list as priority. This is not to say that they won't get funded but all are far from a done deal.
  14. Mr. Allyn is a Metro writer for the Tennessean. Draw your own conclusions.
  15. Then why are you making such a fuss? And when you are finished maybe you could revisit your thoughts on how the MCC was not going to have any of those qualities you desire. Seems like it turned out pretty nice after all.... I'm a realist. I don't dream that we live in Portland, or Paris. I am very proud of the growth and progress being made in the City where I actually live and spend my tax dollars. And I am happy to give my opinions just as you are.
  16. Nashville Bound is on the right track. The first thing to understand is 80% of the available convention business will fit into the MCC. Orlando, with its enormous space is still only filling a small portion of their space full time The second thing to understand is that different groups have different socio-economic scenarios just like everything else in life. For example the needs in terms of types of hotels and nightlife are vastly different for a high end medical convention than they are for a group like the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Both are great groups to have but one wants a Ritz and the other wants the Hyatt Place. One wants nightclubs and great restaurants and the other wants Disneyland. The biggest issue facing the CVB right now is the City's own success in keeping the current rooms booked. Right now the hotels are not hungry for new business because they are full. Even the Omni has broken all pre-opening sales numbers with the bookings that exist. Another 400-500 room 4 star full service hotel combined with the new limited service hotels will create a better scenario for bringing a few more higher end groups to town. This will also help the City attract more corporate headquarters. The money generated by these investments has so far proven to be fruitful. As we saw on Tuesday, the numbers don't lie......
  17. In reference to the above statementt about financing. This has been discussed ad nauseum..... http://nashvillecity...hoice-omni-deal
  18. One thing to remember as you get envious of Convention Center hotels in other Cities like Dallas and Houston. Those projects are primarily financed with tax payer bonds and money. Omni is footing the majority here. Which way would you prefer?
