I'm not sure what has been bad about downtown's development?? ...Dominion Enterprises is bringing hundreds of well paying jobs downtown, as will the medical tower in Fort Norfolk. City officials are also subsidizing the new Wachovia Building to keep white collar jobs IN downtown - and are ending up bringing a company HQ from Chesapeake into the mix. They have also stuck their neck out to get light rail off the ground with no buy-in from their neighbors. Point the lack of white collar jobs in Hampton Roads to HREDA, if anyone - but they have been trying to grow a Simulator Technology sector in Suffolk and Aerospace on the peninsula. Norfolk is only going to be able to do so much as a single city and the leaders seem to have the right idea and maximize the opportunities they are presented with. What solutions are out there that they have not been doing?
There is alot they can do. First clean the managment of this city up. Clean the public school system up. It is ran piss poor. I'm a product of the school system but i always pushed for more. Education is the key. I believe the city wastes money. They don't market themselves very well. Norfolk is more than just a Navy town. Thats the stigma they must remove from the city in order to change the growth of the city..

They need to be looking at bringing more white collar jobs to DT instead of these low end jobs they keep bragging about. Service jobs don't pay that well. We need to wipe the city council out and bring in people that will bring this city up to the pace it should be

I don't like the logic that something is better than nothing. We need to look at this and not rush into it. This should have been looked at 20 years ago but we are here now. We need to do this smart since this will be apart of the region from now on. We need to have people that will answer to the people for mistakes and ill decisions. We don't need people that are going to do things that the people really don't want.
-
if that is the case why should tax dollars out of this region go for their farms and fixing their roads. This is for the better of the state not just our region. Our taxes generated from this area doesn't stay in the region but is distributed throughout the state. Sometimes it needs to come back to the region.

I don't like a authority that really answers to no one. Thats pretty scary. Just because the city Mayor is elected to that office doesn't mean he is affected on the authority board. They need people to be elected by the public to be put in those chairs with time limits on each chair so if we get idiots we can move beyond them. Only makes sense to do it like that

But comparing alot of those issues with these houses in Norfolk being torn down are different situations. Those were destroyed because of invasion of the Germans. This is being torn down because a expansion, not war or natural disasters
-
also building a replica doesn't replace the historic house. They act like its making up for it

Verizon fios tv is only 2 years old and they are constantly adding channels. Picture quality trumps both satelite and cable tv. It will be in your area eventually. Verizon is building the network from the ground up so it will take time. Alot of the channels have exclusive rights with the cable providers but that will soon change.
-
Verizon Fios will have around 100 HD channels by the end of the year. Better picture over both of those companies
-
let me play devils advocate here, this is just another house that really means nothing but is historical to the city. Yes there is 100s more but 40 years ago how many were there? 1000s? One house leads to multiple houses like this being torn down. Bad enough we have to deal with fires and nature destroying them, but we are taking them down faster than those two are. There are going to be others that will see the same fate because they're are "insignificant". People i think are just tired of Norfolk tearing its history down I guess. I won't loss any sleep over this but it does take away what makes Norfolk, Norfolk. What distinguishes Norfolk from Vabeach? Nothing besides the historic buildings we have.

I would have rather paid the extra just for a place i can take the tv back if its screwed up.

Too bad I can't read the article

Anyone have any knowledge of local visits by candidates? I heard about trying to get John McCain to the Crowne Plaza on Bonney in Va Beach but that's all so far. Anyone know anything else?

I do have to agree with the part about being taxed and a authority that really answers to no one. How do we watch how this money is spent without any way of threatening these reps? We can vote out bad reps out of the their seat but their no checks and balancing with this authority. I don't think people mind being taxed for the roads but just the fact that their is no checks and balance with these people in the authority. Not good IMHO

Wow! Man this thing might not get built now. I wonder why the other person(s) pulled out.

I swear people around here are complete morons. People just want to gripe about anything. Its really sad

Norfolk State whining about curb appeal. I guess they haven't walked through half of the buildings or the trash that is all over the campus. They have trailers for police station but they are worried about curb appeal. What a joke
Are they going to try to push the city to tear down the ghetto townhouses by the campus too?
To be honest this sounds like someone is on a power trip and trip to show that they can influence things. That university is really poorly ran and they are worried about this. Crime is high on the campus too!

right, so if your looking at the diabetes institutle from brambleton, the Krisp paks places is in the back and slightly to the right of the diabetes institute. this is to be to the right of krisp pak and diabetes near the curve?
Yes right on the water on that land they decide to make a bike and jog trail that leads to the redgate neighborhood
-
The retirement high rise is by the diabetes center. This is the sliver of land right next to Krispy Kreme
-
where is this going on at?

I imagine he means now

Actually the sheriffs dept handled very unprofessionally. First of all the city wrote a ordinance that violated state law and knownly did it. They harassed a honest citizen and Norfolk pd has had many cases they harassed law abiding citizens. Why aren't they harassing people that are violating the laws instead of people that are abiding by them
-
Yeah i really want more socialism and anti gun for citizens in there. Dems want to turn the US into big socialist hole
What we need is less big govt.

I really wonder if NSU was wanting to use the land for expansion. I bet there is a reason that is going behind closed doors for this. If I was the city I would just keep rolling along. NSU has no say on this. This is not their land so piss off!
