  1. On a similar note, I found this outside a community swimming pool in Avignon, France...
  2. Correct. It was awesome! Last year's souvlaki was very grissly, so much so that I remember it, but this year the meat was tender and perfectly seasoned.
  3. I'm not sure I understand the concept behind the "cultured stone" look in an urban environment. I mean, yeah it looks great on a ski lodge or on the front of your home in some subdivision called ForestViewCrestRidgeBluffs.
  4. c'mon, shouldn't there be a moratorium on rabbit-in-the-backyard photos, I mean its like every page of this Grand Rapids Photo of the Day thread is litterred with rabbits in people backyards from different angles and different times of day, we ALL know what they look like.
  5. C'mon GVSU, throw us a frickin' bone here.
  6. I think Woody is talking about my photo of the three tall buildings. Sorry, I know we've all seen those buildings before, I'm just trying to take interesting and well executed architectural photos. I love the way that one turned out after the little bit of post-production. Very rich and almost painterly. Well done!
  7. please define "blank". in design and composition solids are just as important as voids.
  8. Personally, I don't think your idea (GRdad) of replacing the louvers with glass is much better. Large expanses of glass would be just as "blank" as a brick or louverred wall. In fact, I might go so far as to say that it would be even more oppressive. One... glass has a cold, sterile appearance by nature. Two... glass tends to reflect sound and light, in this case the more important would be the sound. Imagine how much noiser it would be at sidewalk level with a glass wall amplifying the passing vehicles. Obviously we've gotten to this point with this particular project because it was poorly planned. Granted, the slope of Michigan Street presents great challenges and the market demand for ridiculous amounts of parking adds more. I think its silly that the towers address the highway more prominently than the street, and the elevated driveway is even sillier. That whole gesture is very "office park" of them. I think the way Boise stated it was great... "Creating a building fa
  9. check the Press today for an article on Moxie & Churchill's. A rendering was published on the second page. No credit was given, but its from Mr. Important Design and is of the Churchill's bar... also on Mr. Important's website is a conceptual rendering for Moxie...
  10. The concrete surely won't move, but steel is flexible. When you get out to the end of the cantilever (which is a steel frame, not concrete), its going to act like a springboard on a very minute scale. However, the movement won't be as noticeable once they load it up with the planned dead loads like interior walls, furniture, etc. Those will make the structure deflect to a point where it'll be much more difficult for the structure to get moving when live loads, like people walking around, are applied.
  11. Yes, it's Lamar Construction's new corporate headquarters. Designed by Integrated Architecture. Thanks for taking those photos, I've been meaning to go out there and check it out.
  12. I've been told there used to be a restaurant on Monroe, across from the Amway, called Churchill's. That was before my time though. Williams Group is on the second floor of 70. They are comfortable and aren't going anywhere.
  13. My ideal regional transit system would be a lot like Zurich's. Trains and buses come into the city from the suburbs. They stop at intermediate stations on the outskirts of city and the trains continue on to the central station. The street cars connnect the intermediate stations to each other and to the heart of the city. Here's a cool diagram
