Compare that to the Charlotte Knights and the rest of the Triple-A International League: http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...17&sid=l117

The paid attendance is only going to keep growing as the weather gets warmer and kids are out of school, too.

Good numbers for Greenville, especially considering that the team isn't very good this year.

Course Mississippi and Charlotte have the advantage of not having to make a mortgage payment, being in a government built facility, though the Knights will have one in two years.

  2. I rather prefer it being on Court Street, myself; however, I'm willing to give South Main a try and I'll reserve judgement until tomorrow morning.

It will be shadier, and the stalls won't be on an incline, like they were on Court Street, and I expect condo construction probably made this move happen too.

  3. We had planned on doing the wine tasting, but we needed to be back in Greenville unfortunately. The line at the winery had started to get long by 3-4pm.

I believe that a year long pass is still $10 more than a 1 day general admission, if you buy it on site while taking your visit. My wife and I made that purchase and got 6 trips in one year for 1 day admission + $10. I think on three of our trips, we didn't even go inside the house, just hiked the grounds, etc.

  4. Geesh, I thought that'd elicit some response. It's not very often that I go on a rant like that one. Surely someone agrees/disagrees with some of these points?

Oh I agree with just about everything you said. The site tells you quickly a lot of nonessential information and you have to hunt of the essential information. It's just poorly designed all around.

  5. How hard would it be to get rid of the McDonald's? I don't have a problem with them being in the area, but I don't like seeing them behind the statue...

How much money do you have?

Seriously, that McDonald's one perhaps the first new business that moved into that area in years.

  6. I dunno...we've been posting suggestions for that all along. I'd think nothing short of a complete mock-up of our idea for an "acceptable" Drive Web Site would work in this case. I rather like how the Columbus Catfish site is, but I think it must be one that is done by the web designers at MiLB.com.

I really like the MiLB.com format. I especially like the game tracker feature that, with a pop up window, allows you to track live statistics of games, where balls are hit, etc, so it's linked to the official scorer at the park. If Greenville is playing a team with a MiLB.com web site, go to the other team's site during a game and you will see what I mean.

It's a one size fits all thing, but it has everything I'm looking for in a site.

  7. ^^^How is the Aloft a rumor if it was on the site plan as a potential tenant? :dontknow: To me it seems like you think Greenville isn't good enough for these high-end retailers and restaurants and that this development will not be upscale because a Rooms To Go and Costco are next door. I guess somebody forgot that the highest grossing movie theater in the state is also next door too. This development WILL be upscale and high-end. That has already been confirmed by the many articles on this development. It will be much better than the Shops at Greenridge and the Village at Sandhill. You will see you're wrong when it gets built next year. It WILL include a Z Gallerie, Ruth's Chris, Cheesecake Factory, Anthropologie, etc. The debate is over about whether it will be high-end or not.

That's an excellent point. The highest grossing multi-plex theater in South Carolina is right next door. Based on that alone there should be a Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom and even a Ben & Jerry's if you want to slum it immediately next to the movie theater.

  8. This gateway is coming along very nicely. The statue is in place between a couple of columns and it appears that it will be lighted and landscaped beautifully. I'll get out and take a snapshot some time this weekend.

The dedication is sometime in May, probably weekend after Mother's Day.

  9. Went today at 4:00pm to try to see Jon Lester pitch again, but it doesn't appear that he got the chance. Due to yesterday's rain out, the game was picked up today as game 1 of a double header. Lester was warmed up and brought in as a relief pitcher in the first game, but for some reason, he wasn't allowed to pitch. The game was held up for several minutes while the managers and umpires talked it over. I'll be curious to read about what happened as there was no announcement over the P.A. to explain what was going on, but my guess is that Lester wasn't permitted to pitch because he was scheduled to be the starter for Game 2? Needless to say, he didn't start Game 2 after warming up to pitch in Game 1. Never a dull moment at West End Field.

I think this is the answer you are looking for. Since he is on a rehabilitation stint, he is just around to get work in, regardless of how he comes by it:

After warming up and taking the mound, umpires Jason Kaminsky and Drew Ashcroft informed Greenville manager Gabe Kapler that Lester would not be allowed to pitch because his name was not on the Drive's lineup card.

Instead of returning to pitch in the second game, Lester tossed a simulated game of 75 pitches in the bullpen.

    http://www.greenvillenews.com/apps/pbcs.dl...S0601/704160320

A pitcher can appear in any game, at any time, regardless of announced plans like future starts, for him. The only that matters is the line up card given to an umpire at the start of every game. Only those on the card can participate. I believe the Drive are limited to a 25 man roster, but with Lester not being a permanent part of the team, someone is getting bumped every time he pitches. I guess Kapler had just forgotten he had not activated Lester for the game. That's life in the minor's for you.

  10. That's a good informative article, answering many questions that had been thrown around on here. I'm a little disappointed with the description of the building. I was hoping for something with a lot of glass with a more contemporary look to it. Nonetheless this will be fantastic!

A non "classical" style as the article puts it, or something that is not complementary to the sorta Art Deco stylings of the 1920's era Liberty, Pointsett and old Courthouse buildings would be a bit out of place. As out of place, as well, the giant filing cabinet look of the present day city hall, that replaced a robust Art Deco City Hall.

  11. See it needs a more noticeable building to get your attention. It's very easy to see, but it's just one building. My poor photo doesn't do it justice. Look next time, before you get to 153.

Is a more noticeable building needed to prove how impressive Greenville is, so we can feel good about ourselves, or is there an actual market for one in a city with land prices that don't immediately call for high rise structures.

  12. ^ Great photos RT! Thanks! The pre-game pow-wow shot should be picked up by the Drive for use on the website.:thumbsup: Awesome shot!

The Drive could do wonders by doing nothing more than drawing from the Flickr Drive Group for their photos.

A good thing about the Drive's website is that it set up for news to be syndicated via RSS, so now with my newsreader, I never have to go to that website again, and can just read the latest on my own page. So it has that going for it.

  13. I'm not holding my breath on this one. So many deals for this site have fallen through. The site is surrounded by one-way streets that have bumper to bumper traffic a large part of the day. That is the kiss of death for retail. The site is very isolated.

I'll believe it when I see it.

I'm with you there. At least some of the other proposals actually had arch. drawings with them, this doesn't even have that. It's really a bad site for development, and I'm not surprised that nothing has been put there, high rise or anything else. The roads surrounding it are hard to cross for pedestrians and difficult to navigate to for cars due to traffic.

I had hoped that a Federal Courthouse would work there, because it seemed like the government might be the only institution that would actually take a chance on that property, with its proximity to the county court house and the law firms in the area.

The Memorial Auditorium and now the Bi-Lo Center have been at that site for going on 50 years now. Other than the old Warehouse Theater, I'm not aware of any other type of business that has moved close to either facility. It's just not a particularly great location.

  14. So now we know why nothing has happened with the Congressional Authorization for the Carroll Campbell Federal Courthouse. Doesn't sound like much that the city is considering, just talk. I do believe there is a hold at the moment on new Federal Courthouses.

I watched the video for the Memorial Auditorium implosion on the linked WYFF site, still angered that the structure was torn down so easily, it was a well-made facility and could have had another life for other uses. In return, 10 years of talks, lots of proposals and not much else. That empty lot is as sure as symbol as anything why things like the Greenville Grrrowl are gone for example.

  15. At least it works - very slowly. It is still not user friendly and inconsistent between pages. Hopefully it will smooth out over time though.

    I'll second Skyliner's comments.

Other than unpopulated pages, VERY slow access - as in stopping all other tabs open on my web browser while the page takes a few minutes to load on my somewhat fast DSL connection, an odd, large page design, links that take you back to the home page when you wanted to go somewhere else, etc.

I counted 14 individual graphical elements below the banner on the home page. That's a lot going on on one page. It's like a Myspace page. Not every page has a return link to the home page, and there still isn't much connection to the Boston Red Sox, or their other minor league organizations.

I'd really play up that West End Field was 2007 Ballpark of the year, with either the link to the Ballpark Digest folks, or a description of why it was so named.

Not trying to be hard on the web designers, and I assume you are somehow connected to them PhilyTiger, but it can be a lot better.

  16. Can someone explain to me how the the new site is unprofessional? Other than being slow to load, which I think will be fixed, I think the new site is great. It's much more organized, brighter, uses some of the nostalgic photos, and the brick is more exposed.

I believe the site is going slow because of the host's server. I'm a huge MiLB fan, and when I was checking a bunch of other teams that Infinity hosts (same as the Drive's new site) they were all very slow to load. I also noticed on the Drive's site that it looks like some of the links on the navigation bar (Lineup) on the left aren't loading, once again probably due to the host server.

Skyliner, the reason the broadcast isn't working is because the link says "Click here to listen to Drive home games." The team is on the road, therefore it's not going to work. I've been listening to the game on the RiverDogs website.

Who else is excited for Opening Day?! Only 4 days!

If I wanted to learn who the players on the team were, where would I go? How about the coaches?

Speaking of nostalgia, where would I go to learn about Greenville baseball history, like you can on the Augusta Green Jacket site (built by the same company that did the Drive's)? How about the history of the Bombers/ Drive organization? Ownership?

If I was interested in learning about team promotions, say I wanted to know if the Famous Chicken was coming, where would I go on the site for that?

If I wanted to buy team merchandise, how would I do that? I see a link for a fitted hat, I click on it and I go to a white page. Is there an online store?

If I ran a community organization, and wanted to rent a box, buy some group seats, etc, could I easily learn how to do that with the Drive website?

If I wanted to go to other sites of teams in the Red Sox organization, where is that link? In fact, I don't see anything about the Red Sox on that site, or that the Drive are the Low A affiliate of the BoSox. That seems important.

If I was new to the area, or a businessman staying over night with some time on my hands, where are the directions to West End Field?

There were some nice articles in the First Pitch program last year, and I assume that there will be more this year about Drive players, etc. Seems some of those should be archived onlline.

If I wanted to contact someone about having Reedy Rip-It come to my event, etc., where would I learn about that on the website?

Just a few random thoughts on first look of it. I have no doubt that the Drive will have another successful year, probably break last year's Greenville minor league baseball record for attendance and folks will continue to have a good time. Just some of the edges could stand to be polished.

  17. I don't think the website looks too bad. It's not wonderful, but it's not disappointing by any means. It's certainly not as dark as last year's version.

My only complaints: the page was very slow to load, and the page is too wide. Even with the page maximized on my screen, I still had to use a scroll bar to see the entire page left-to-right.

I am glad the Drive are working on improving the website, and I am confident they will perfect it - just like they have with everything else.

the Drive's first site at the start of last season was the best one that they had. I realize their business model is to sell the 'experience' of baseball rather than the game itself, which is fine - that's where sports marketing is these days, not my favorite, but that's their call, I just wish there was a place I could go on their site to learn about the team, the South Atlantic League, etc.
