  1. Very nice shot, Cricket! :shades:

This one is not in Greenville, but still is nearby. I shot this photo on Highway 28 in Oconee County on the way up to Highlands, North Carolina. Obviously, you can see that I had a small bit of fun with the original photo:

    Highway28_2006_01b.jpg

Hwy 28 is a wonderful road, with some incredible views, especially as you travel south from NC to SC, descending into a valley, you can just see for miles.

  2. This is true until you get to high schools and you have to have land for not only the school but also football, baseball, track, tennis courts, etc... Not only are you paying for the facilities and upkeep, but you are also paying for a coach at each one of those schools for each program. It may not be all that much of a difference, but when you're picking at school districts for fine details then you can't overlook such additional spending at the micro level, IMO.

Most coaches salaries are supplemented by ticket admissions and booster clubs. Many assistants are volunteers who hold other jobs in the community. That and most coaches teach a full schedule, then work another 40 hours+ a week on their sport, and after a while what looks like a nice bump for a coach isn't as impressive when broken down.

A good high school physical facility can also function as a community park as well, rather than have separately maintained city and county recreational parks close by.

  3. It does seem unlikely for long international flights in the near future. Although there is some interest from a bussiness standpoint. As far as can they accomodate the size of plane needed I think they can. All they have are single jet bridges, I've seen 747's and 777's using a single jet bridge, and the runway at 11,001 feet can accommodate any size plane maybe even the new Airbus A-380. We had a fully loaded Antinov land here with a 100-ton payload with no problem at all. A fully loaded passenger plane would be well beneath that number. They can accommodate international flights. It just won't happen because of all they crazy variables that GSP seems to lose out on. Such as needing a second runway for some of these carriers. Can't get a second runway till the first one is at like 60% capacity can't increase capacity because the existing airlines won't add destinations; with the exception of Allegiant. Can't get people to use GSP because of the stupidly high prices, the airlines won't lower the prices because the flights are 80% full, so on and so forth. It's time for someone to quit find reasons why not and go against the grain, step up to the plate and make it happen.

Why would someone in the financially tight and troubled airline industry "step up to the plate" like that for GSP?

GSP is a nice regional airport, but to consider it an international player, even in the expected future, isn't realistic. Other than GSP giving away huge grants to lure airlines, there isn't much that can happen. And it would be insane to suggest that GSP should give away deals like that.

Again, fine regional airport, but it's geographically between one of the largest airports in the world to the west, a major airline hub to the east, and between two other regional airports to the north and south of it by about a hour to hour and a half. That's a tight squeeze

  4. As you may know the one thing literally burned (ohhh... Memory Burn!) in my memory is seeing the little (what appeared to be mennonite) girl jumping up and down at the gate with her camera at her excitement of seeing Micheal Jordon during his short minor league baseball stint. That's something you don't see everyday.

Oh yeah, who could ever forget His Airness making two appearances at Municipal Stadium with the Birmingham Barons. I'm not sure the President has that many SUV's and security personnel following him around.

  5. In a 4 game sweep, the Sox won!!!!!!!!!!!! :yahoo:

IMO, this will only continue to "drive" interest in The Drive, for the upcoming season.

It was neat growing up in the late 80's and 90's and seeing so many talented players go from the Greenville Braves to become important players on the great Braves teams. Guys like Andruw Jones, Javy Lopez, David Justice, Ryan Klesko, Steve Avery, Jeff Blauser, etc. were fun to follow as they went up the chain. Great to see that Greenville has another winner at the top of the baseball chain as a parent club, so players passing through play important roles on the national stage again.

  6. I think perhaps it has, maybe. I couldn't walk 100 feet during Fall for Greenville this year without seeing someone wearing a Red Sox hat. It was pretty cool. I'm just looking forward to seeing that World Series Trophy at West End Field come April! :P I'm sure the Rockies have something to say about that, though....but at least it'd be a short drive to Asheville to see it there, too.

That's right, the Rockies do have a team at the Asheville Tourists. I'd be surprised if the Drive and Tourists didn't jump on that connection, just being 60 miles apart.

Speaking of World Series trophies, anyone remember this:post-10095-1193264775_thumb.jpg

  7. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure they used to be in the mill that was torn down for Cherrydale. In addition they had a "true" outlet store in the old strip mall that was beside the Wal-Mart in Taylors. That strip mall was torn down as well so thta Wal-Mart could be expanded and a new strip mall went in.

You are correct, what is now the Cherrydale shopping center was once the Umbro factory and outlet as well.

The Cherrydale site is an interesting place that sorta broadly tells the story of the South, or at least this part of it.

It was once the country retreat/ plantation farm of the Furman family in the 1800's, including of course the Cherrydale mansion that was moved about eight years ago from the hill that was leveled on that site, to the Furman campus. After the war, farming on the site collapsed, and it became a series of small mills, with the house remaining.

After the Depression, the facility that became Umbro was built and lasted until the early 90's. Not only was it interesting to see a shopping center in that location, but that was a hilly site that was completely leveled for the Cherrydale Shopping center.

So one site, in about a 130 years goes from plantation to small manufacturing to larger manufacturing to service industry, which is a lot of the economic history of the region.

  8. I must reply to myself! I pretty much forgot that just before I left FMU in 2000, the state had instituted something called Performance Based Funding where a portion of the state's allocation to each institution was determined by a rating. I don't recall the particulars of the various criteria, but I do remember that the methodology was questioned strongly. Have no idea if this is still actually being used to allocate funds.

Performance based funding for higher education in South Carolina was starting to be implemented back in the late 90's. Winthrop is not in the same category as Clemson, USC or MUSC (research based institutions), but for its category (with CofC, El Cid, Coastal, etc.) it is ranked as meeting all the performance objectives. I think Winthrop has been at the maximum for several years now.

  9. Has anyone else noticed an increase in pan handlers/ vagrants in the Main Street and West End area recently? Everytime I've been down there in the evening in recent weeks, I've been stopped by a pan handler, sometimes aggressively.

Going to the movie at the ballpark Saturday night, I saw one man trying to stop a woman pulling out of a parking lot and I guess attempt to beg off her. He then tried to stop my wife and I as we passed on the sidewalk, but we kept on walking, and then swore at us for walking away from him.

That on top of the half Apache/ Half Hawaiian former Marine guy I met outside the history museum who stopped me to tell me that he was certain that he was going to be part of a revolution when the Apache's and the Mexicans take over from the white man.

  10. Has anyone else been to the Saturday night movies at West End Field? I went with some family Saturday evening to check it out and it was real pleasant. There were probably 200 to 300 or so for the free movie. It was nice to see so many kids playing on the field, touch football, etc., especially by the Green Monster.

Of course parking wasn't a problem, even with Fall for Greenville going on, and seems like a great way to have a cheap family outing. I think its going on for two more weeks.

  11. I finally had the opportunity to try out Liberty Tap Room Saturday evening and came away real impressed.

I had grilled chicken with pecans and cranberries, greens and sweat potatoes, almost Thanksgiving like, and it was excellent.

The decor was muted, not in your face, and certainly didn't have lots of crazy crap on the wall. Hard to believe that building is brand new based on the interior, for it looks much older.

The wait staff was good, and they had some nice outdoor music on their patio. The food wasn't anymore expensive than an Applebee's or Ruby Tuesday, and much better quality I think.

    I recommend it.

  12. The Woodlands at Furman, a continuing care community, is about to start construction by Furman. The rendering from the Greenville News article looks nice. The article doesn't state the exact location....anyone know? Will it front Highway 25 or Poinsett Highway?

    http://greenvilleonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/...4/1003/BUSINESS

North of the golf course, not really fronting either road, but off Roe Ford Road. Furman has a lot of property back there that just isn't used at all. It's a project that has met with some controversy among the Furman community. It's been talked about nearly ten years now.

  13. Yes, indeed. Just look at Roger Clemens. How many times has he retired? It's not baseball, but look at ABC's Keith Jackson, too. I've been reading some blogs of late that were reporting that Kapler was wanting to get back to the playing field. He certainly does seem to have some devoted fans out there. I wonder who the Drive's new manager will be in 2008?

If Kapler returns as a player for Boston next season, he could coached by Luis Alicea. So you would have the 2006 Drive manager coaching the 2007 Drive manager on the field.

  14. So Kapler was only here for a year? For some reason, I think I thought he was permanently retired. An article about him returning to the playing field.

    http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2007/09/20/...n-to-the-field/

    http://greenvilledrive.com/clubhouse/news/...?article_id=206

The Drive have reported the same thing. He's 32, and I can imagine he still has the itch to play. He was retired, but you can unretire too.

  15. Perhaps the "small items for tourists" could be the makings of our Greenville-themed store with Greenville apparel, stickers, etc.?

I still think that there needs to be a reasonably-sized "Greenville store" close to Falls Park. Where are people supposed to go if they want Greenville gear?!? We seem to be getting enough tourists to warrant better marketing/branding of our city.

Mast General Store? The shoe store near the Hyatt on Main? They sell Greenville related items.

I'd think a store that sold "Greenville Gear" only would be out of business about the afternoon it opened.

  16. Dunean will benefit from the South Church Street/Mills Avenue revitalization. Dunean Mill would be an excellent site to convert into "loft" condominiums.

I do believe the Dunean mill is still open, making seat belt fabric, among other car fabrics.

Now the neighborhood itself is a place I expect to see rise in value, along some older homes. Or it go entirely ethnic. hard to say at this point.
