And at the rate that BoA is laying off its employees, there is a huge amount of talented, skilled and trained professionals without jobs clamoring to find decent salaries. I'm still holding out for BB&T to move HQ here to have all the larger NC banks in one consolidated city. That and it would move us that much closer to NYC. Catching NYC is a dream for 2030+ but is less than doubtful any time in the near future unless Wachovia decides to make an enormous merger go Charlotte's way.

I don't think BB&T is planning on any moves in the immediate future. However, they are constantly the speculation of merger/aquisition talks and who knows, that may happen and change things (that doesn't necessarily mean Charlotte though.) I will say, that Winston-Salem would put up the fight of their lives to prevent another local bank going to Charlotte. (C'mon guys, let us keep one, just one!) :D

BB&T has said repeatedly that is sees a competitive advantage in *not* having a Charlotte headquarters. It's never going to be the biggest bank here, but it is the biggest bank in the Triad, and that has real value. If it moved anywhere, it's always made more sense to move to Raleigh -- for the same reasons.

At any rate, BB&T's chairman has said in recent months that he expects the bank to do a "merger of equals" in the next few years. When that happens, most analysts expect the headquarters will leave North Carolina for the same reason -- the new bank could be the biggest somewhere else, but it will never dominate here.

This idea has broader implications -- the dominance of BofA and Wachovia in Charlotte is actually a very powerful reason why other banks don't want to move here.

My guess is that Uptown's next "banking" tower will come when one of BofA/Wachovia's law firms decids it wants a tower -- like the new King & Spalding tower in Atlanta.

If it's unlikely for Uptown to get another tower built by a third bank, then what about a spec office tower? It's been discussed on UP before. Do ya'll think there might be one anytime in the near future, or is just too big of a risk after seeing the risk and results of the Carillon Tower?

In next weeks CBJ, there is an article about RBC Centure saying they are looking to consolidate their Charlotte offices into Uptown. They also said that whereever they go, they want to have a bank branch in that building.....sounds like a good anchor tenant for some of these new proposals.

I think it has to do with the fact that the new CEO of RBC Centura lived in Raleigh....regardless, I agree with what you are saying about the banking talent here, and hopefully that will lead to job creation in the higher paying functions, like Investment Banking, in Charlotte.
