I was nearly broadsided yesterday by the epitome of what I despise: a person (I'll leave gender out of it...), driving an Expedition, talking on a cell phone, with a right blinker on, running a red light (didn't turn right despite the blinker). Their light had to have been red for at least 4 seconds, cause this intersection has a 2-second all red and my light was green for at least two seconds. If only I had a glock and murder wasn't so frowned upon...

oops. sorry dude.

oh wait, i don't have a ford Expedition. I have a Ford Exsanguinator! Whew. it wasn't me after all.

it's hot outside. and the freakin' AC in my office doesn't work properly!!! in fact, the hallways are cooler than my office.

My AC keeps shutting down around 3pm. Hello, I'm still here!

But it's still cooler than walking home or waiting for the bus, so I'm in no hurry to leave.

Ughh I'm on the third floor of a Victorian house, basically what used to be the attic. Our AC units don't do sh!t up here!

i live on the 2nd floor... my landlady pays the electric and originally didn't allow it (but the woman downstairs now has 3 units!!!). i have AC in my bedroom, that's it. i have fans in the windows blowing out to suck air out of hte bedroom and cool the rest of the apartment. it also sucks cool air up from the first floor, which is like an ice box. i can't afford another unit and i know the landlady is pissed at them for having so many to begin with that i don't want to get more and upset her.

I'm talkin about my office! My apartment luckily is on the first floor so even on a day like today it barely gets above 85 inside. Then I crank my AC unit all night til its freezing in my bedroom. All my utilities are included in my rent so I don't have to see the extra cost, though I'm supposed to give my landlord extra money if I have an AC unit-which I have yet to do and its already August...I feel like he's saving money not having to pay heating so what I'm using in electricity now makes up for that...

ugh... that sucks. i just spoke with the physical plant guy who said "there's a problem with flow that they know about" but left it at that... meaning they're not fixing it anytime soon. the set point is 72 and the temp is 77. and it's full of computers... it should be cooler i think.

My Facilities person just tells me he wishes he could tear down our building, then leaves.

Once in a while I seriously consider building a house that is completely underground. Yesterday I was curious so I walked up and down my house with a thermometer I borrowed from work (nearly instant). One thing about my house that really sucks is that it faces Southwest...and the trees that used to provide some shade from the afternoon sun (100+ year old oak) were torn down so my neighbor could put a parking lot behind his house.

Basement, no air flow - 68 degrees

First floor, with no AC - 85 degrees

First floor, AC (13x22 area) - 72 degrees

Second floor, top of stairs (no ventilation) - 102 degrees

Second floor, AC (16x20 area) - 85 degrees

Second floor, no AC - 98 degrees

Not to mention that even on the coldest day of the winter my basement doesn't get below 60 degrees, and that's with only residual heat from the furnaces.

When I was in college we lived on the third floor in a Victorian with no window units (we were cheap). One summer weekend we all went to the Cape and without thinking left all of the windows closed. It was about 110 degrees in there when we got back.

i have no idea what posesses me to leave the office.

our third floor all southwest facing apartment made of magnifying glass windows is really really uncomfortable.

so i'm ready for it to be over. right now. I've been swaddling the cats in wet towels to cool them.

i think its Gregg's for dinner.

Your art skills have come a long way, Cotuit! :D

That was pre-Photoshop.

And what is that MMMMM donuts topic?

Something about the number of Dunkin Donuts here I think, the thread is around somewhere. Back in the day, all the northeast topics from Virginia to Maine were in one big subforum, not broken down into states or cities. And since there weren't many (any) RIers here, it was more about telling people about Providence, rather than discussing the intracacies.

lest anyone think i'm on top of my game at all times, i was just walking home from breakfast at Nick's to discover that i was sporting two entirely different running shoes. Well, they weren't entirely different--they were both Nikes but still... We turned down Vinton street so that i wouldn't have to walk by all the hipsters at Julians.

you never know though... you could've started a new trend (althoug i have a feeling hipsters don't wear nikes because of the sweatshop thing and all). you could've gone by the next week and they would've been wearing 2 different shoes themselves.

Anyone give me a ballpark how much it would cost to heat approx. 700sf in the winter per month? And same for electricity?

my gas bill for 450 sq feet in the winter has gone as high as $150. i don't pay electricity, so i have no idea, but it's usually fairly cheap so long as you don't have electric heat or air conditioners going all the time. for an example, my last apartment was all electric (heat, stove, hot water). the most my bill was in the winter was $100 (but it was half underground in a basement).

I think you should figure on about $200 per month at current energy prices, higher if you are in an older uninsulated place. Energy prices have pretty much gone insano. My first year owning my house I locked into a oil deal at $1.19/gallon. Two years later, $2.79/gallon.
