Agency buys land next to Saluda Shoals Park

Some uses for property depend on outcome of Nov. 2 referendum

By JOEY HOLLEMAN

Staff Writer

The Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission on Wednesday bought 127 acres adjacent to Saluda Shoals Park on Bush River Road for $2.4 million.

The agency plans to put a water park, an indoor pool and possibly a skate park on the property if district voters on Nov. 2 approve an $18.5 million bond proposal. In the meantime, the agency plans to open a temporary dog park soon in a fenced section of the property.

If the referendum fails, the agency would come up with other uses for the property or sell portions of it. Regardless, the agency would like to hold on to the nearly one-third mile of river frontage as an extension of Saluda Shoals Park
