America's new Sydney Opera House

Recommended Posts

The construction for this new building is set for August 2005. It will be one of the most unique buildings in America, much like Sydney's Opera House! This will have a huge impact on the KC skyline. Here are some renderings of the " Metropolitan Kansas City Performing Arts Center":

Being from Sydney I was of course curious.

The exterior reminds me more of all of the rather amazingly beautiful cultural centres being built or planned for mainland Chinese cities.

Although this render reminds me more of standing inside the Sydney Opera House (BTW lol at the multiple images of the same people in evening attire but just standing in different positions, unless it was "Twins Night" ;) ):

For comparison - inside one of the main lobby areas of the S.O.H. from: The Sydney Opera House

I like this view.

Something very Metropolis about it. I hope that it is situated well within the cityscape though, and not set aside on it's own see of landscaping. It would be much more compelling set against surrounding buildings.

Ask and you shall receive (although you didn't ask for a photo)

On the left is the PAC, on the right is the ballroom. (up and right from PAC) Both should start construction sometime next year.

This is the new ballet building which should start construction this year (it needs to be completed before the PAC and Ballroom). It will be situated east of the PAC (would be on the lower right of the PAC on the rendering)

Of course, in this photo of the downtown loop it will be on the left side, just south of the Bartle Hall Convention Center. Which is also planning an expansion just east of the planned Ballroom. (both the ballroom and CC expansion are to span over the interstate)

On this section of the Power & Light District (Cordish/H&R Block's entertainment district to start construction next spring or summer) website it shows the projects that will be in the southern part of the downtown loop and the northern part of the crossroads district.

If we each had a dollar for every time someone compares their city's new building to the Sydney Opera House! I bet every city has a couple buildings whose architects or fans have said this. And they're generally full of it.

But here's the kicker: Sydney's opera house isn't that great of a building, at least to me. I think it's ugly from less than a quarter mile. It's famous not because it's a great building, but because it's out on the end of a peninsula, next to a downtown skyline and surrounded by water and the world's greatest bridge. And because it's the symbol of one of the world's best cities.

I sort of like the building in KC. It'll probably be on KC postcards. But it won't make waves nationwide, let alone worldwide.

America's new Sydney opera house clone may be a casino resort in Vegas. This is a proposed project that will most likely be built. The Main hotel tower is 60 stories and looks like it should be in Dubai. The wheel will be the worlds tallest at over 600 feet.

The yachts in the fake harbor will be high roller suites.

Wow, that's crazy looking.  If anyone's going to top the Dubai's and the Shanghai's of the world, it'll be Las Vegas!  Tallest ferris wheel?  What's the name of that casino?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

It's called The Palace by the Sea Resort and Casino and it's planned for the property directly south on the Sahara (where the water park 'was')
