The End is Near!

Everyone loves a good ol' scary "the world is coming to an end" tale and here's the latest:

A possible solar storm could turn America and other advanced societies into third world nations. It seems to have some merit and should be considered by policy makers, but in this current economic climate, I doubt it.

Anyone know of some others to share?

At a secret government lab a supervirus is inadvertently unleashed. A lone security guard escapes before the facility locks down. He grabs his family and makes a run for it. Unfortunately, he's already infected. Once unleashed on the general populace, the virus wipes out 80% - 90% of the population. The survivors gradually separate into two groups - upright citizens who try to rebuild society and wicked criminals who revel in the chaos - setting up a battle between good and evil for the future of mankind's soul.
