There is a plan to build a Performing Arts Center in Chester. Proposed is a 300-seat theatre with stage house large enough to accommodate a symphony orchestra.

Henrico has converted a school in Glen Allen into a very popular theatre complex just off Mountain Road and has restored The Henrico Theatre on Nine Mile Road in Highland Springs, although one rarely reads anything about the latter.

Restoration of the former Carpenter Center, nee Loew's Theatre, is almost complete on the corner of 6th and Grace Streets downtown. The complex, known as Richmond Center Stage debuts Saturday, September 12th followed by free guided tours of the facility on Sunday, September 13th between 1PM and 5PM.

Further, considerable work is progressing at The Landmark Theatre to improve backstage facilities.

The Modlin Center at The University of Richmond has announced its 2009/2010 season which will be performed in no less than six venues. All performance spaces are located on campus except for a few of the larger shows which will be downtown at The Carpenter Theatre.

Sometimes venues change names for one reason or another. Camp Concert Hall is also known as Booker Hall of Music.

Well Burt, I don't think you'll see any positive news coming from Style as it relates to CenterStage.

Ha! I was trying to be kind.

Style has never been an avid supporter of the performing arts center, nor has Richmond Magazine. And God knows, Harrison has been downright vitriolic in his opposition.

Perhaps they've all mellowed.

Dominion Resources supports The Richmond Ballet's 14 performances of THE NUTCRACKER at The Carpenter Theatre and a few performances of the ballet at Chrysler Hall in Norfolk.

There's also news in the article about financial support from various organizations for other non-profits in Metro Richmond.

From today's R-TD:

http://www2.timesdispatch.com/rtd/business...-211204/294172/

Click on the ballet's website http://www.richmondballet.com then click Gallery for scenes from some of the company's productions.

While Main Stage productions this year will be at The Carpenter Theatre with full orchestra, Richmond Ballet has its own studio theatre, seating about 200, at 5th and Canal Streets where programs are presented with recorded music.

They will perform at The Joyce Theatre in New York City for a week in April after previewing the programs in the Studio Theatre from March 23rd until April 1st, 2010. This will be the company's fourth visit to New York City in as many years.

Tomorrow night, Friday September 25th, downtown Richmond with be illuminated as never before and, weather permitting, 10,000+ visitors are expected to amble along Broad and Grace between 5th and 8th Streets. Buildings such as the Carpenter Theatre and Richmond Center Stage as well as buildings along Grace Street will be decorated with "light" art. While this is a one-night affair, organizers hope to install a permanent exhibit -- a solar-powered tree attached to the side of the Greater Richmond Convention Center.

The building in the photograph isn't identified, but it looks like the Broad Street front of the Convention Center to me and unless its a preview installation, it already has a lit tree on its facade.

Here's Jeremy Slayton's story from today's R-TD:

If you choose to dine in the immediate area there is the noisy T-Miller's Sports Bar and Grill in The Marriott which has a quieter outdoor patio overlooking Broad Street, as well as Gibson's Grill in The National Theatre. But don't overlook The Great American Grill in The Hilton Garden Inn. It's not much to look at but the menu is somewhat reminiscent of old Miller & Rhoads Tea Room.

David Fisk, Executive Director of The Richmond Symphony, writes to board members and supporters under date of Friday, September 25th, 2009:

"...as the weekend approaches: we just made the 60% mark of total budgeted revenue raised for FY10 year-to-date."

And he goes on...

"...single ticket sales for this weekend's performances of 'Carmina Burana' concerts just passed $32,000 ($10,000 over goal) and are still moving -- making this program the highest selling STX Masterworks Series concert on record."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, it seems lots of people are anxious to hear the orchestra as it makes its debut in its permanent home at The Carpenter Theatre.

Did the In-Light affair in downtown Richmond get rained out last night? There isn't a single word about it in the on-line edition of today's R-TD.

The newspaper's economic cuts are very irritating -- although as a non-subscriber I suppose I shouldn't complain! Coverage of local events, especially on weekends, is getting scarcer and scarcer.

I've searched everywhere imaginable but have been unable to find a review (online) of how the Richmond Symphony sounds in The Carpenter Theatre. The orchestra christened the hall for the public Saturday night with a performance of "Carmina Burana" and I believe it repeats the program tonight.

One would think the Richmond Times Dispatch, despite its financial woes, could afford to hire a reputable free-lance music critic and post that person's comments online. I am anxious to hear about the acoustics of the hall as well as quality of the orchestra's performance.

First Friday Art Walk is scheduled for tomorrow, February 5th. But it appears Mother Nature may interfere with another messy weekend.

El Nino is to blame for all this. Every time the littlew brat stirs up the Pacific Ocean the southeast part of the USA gets lots of precipitation. His sister, La Nina calms things down when she takes over.

WICKED, the smash Broadway musical that tells you everything about Oz before Dorothy was sucked up there in a Kansas tornado, opens a three-week run at the huge 3,600 seat Landmark Theatre beginning Wednesday, March 10th.

WICKED is a very elaborate stage piece with flying monkeys and witches and a wonderful musical score.

If you haven't seen it in New York or elsewhere, treat yourself and your family.

Here's the Richmond schedule for the National touring company at The Landmark Theatre on Monroe Park at Laurel and West Main Streets.

The Landmark has just undergone some major backstage improvements, including a more convenient loading dock that will make it more appealing to large traveling show. Its stage, before improvements, is one of the largest in the country.

Connecticut, the sculptured Indian currently atop the box office at the Diamond Baseball Park on N. Boulevard in Richmond, may find a new roost now that The Diamond is no longer home to The Richmond Braves. One of the finalist amongst bidders for the immense statue is Odell Associates which did such a stunning renovation of the Lucky Strike Power Plant at the eastern end of Tobacco Row. Connecticut would be placed on the roof of the building at East Cary and Pear Streets where he could peer over the James River.

Connecticut is 10 feet high and 25 feet wide.
