Whoohoo for Charlotte college sports fans! ESPNU, which shows mostly college athletics but occasionally high school sports as well, will now be a part of the basic digital cable tier for Time Warner Cable subscribers (Channel 138). We now have ESPNU, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN Classics, Lincoln Financial (Jefferson Pilot) and Raycom Sports events (mostly ACC), and all of the main pro sports that show up on the likes of ABC, NBC, CBS, and Fox.

Yeah, their offices/studios are down in Ballantyne. What makes sense isn't always what happens in reality. Often an area is blacked out even when interest is probably highest for in that area. Games that aren't sold out for example, are often not shown in the stadium's viewing area. In this case however, it all had to do with contract negotiations between ESPN (Disney) and Time Warner on payment. Before, it was available in Charlotte, you just had to pay extra for it but now, it will be included on the basic tier.

Verizon (really the old New York Telephone company and serveral other former Bell System operating companies) does not provide land line service in Charlotte so we won't see their FIOS here. The alternative is AT&T (really Bell South & SBC telephone) have a different technology which still attempts to use copper wires hopes to achieve the same speeds. It should be noted that Bell South did not believe in getting into this business it's being absorbed into SBC telephone will hopefully make a difference here.

These local telephone companies have been more interested in protecting their entrenched monopoly positions in the courts and legislatures rather than focusing on better products for their customers. Thankfully we have satellite and cable TV to provide some alternatives.
