The Navy Base Port Terminal

I thought that since the ball is starting to roll on the new terminal, it needed its own thread so we can stay updated on it. The article link below details how this project is starting to pick up steam. The Charleston Naval Complex Redevelopment Authority recently transferred the 317-acre site for the new terminal at the southern end of the old Navy base to the SPA yesterday. The site of the SPA's new container terminal is south of Viaduct Road. The SPA is still leasing the nearby Veterans Terminal (creating more ability to increase capacity :thumbsup: ) from the redevelopment authority and that site will also be transferred to them at a later date.

The new $600 million cargo terminal will have three berths, and plans call for it to be completed in 2012. The SPA broke ground on the long-delayed expansion project in early May, more than two months ahead of the land transfer.

Will this help Charleston retake 2nd place from Savannah for east coast ports? I hope so, I don't understand how the city could allow a river port to over take them. Charleston has too many geographical advantages, (ie distance from the open ocean, depth of the harbor, avail space in a harbor compared to a river) to have allowed that to happen especially when one of the reasons for the Ravenel Bridge was to allow taller Container ships to get to the a lot of the terminals.

It COULD. Charleston will ahve to do much more tha build roads though. They need port space and the need to have better rail access. Right now its not as effective as it coudl be (mostly because of docks on the east side of the Cooper (Wando Terminal).
