Home renovation question

So I am looking at older homes. And one which looks very promising has a staircase that is literally about 24" wide. (Anymore I find it helps to lean against a wall when my hands are full and I can't use the bannister; perhaps this is a plus. But it would be difficult to get any furniture to the upstairs.)

If you know of someone who's done interior re-working, please PM me. I want to find out if widening a staircase is feasable, and of course how many contractor's boat payments this would entail.
