With the end of summer and the return of the children to school, the local arts scene has woken up from its summer doldrums and promises a full slate of events just for September alone to take advantage of the warm weather.

Sunday September 10th, Folk Fest is coming to the grounds of Reynolda House. Sponsored by the Fiddle and Bow society, this event will feature regional artists like Martha Bassett, Randy Fulk, Polecat Creek and Sally Spring Band. Performances run from 12pm-6pm. Admission for people over 12 is $10 each while child get in for free. There are food concessions on site. Admission to the festival includes the Museum Tour at the house which this week starts a new exhibit Self Image which depicts portraiture by American artists. All in all this will be great experience for everyone.

September 15th will see the annual Rock the Block in Downtown Winston-Salem. As usual, several stages will be set up along Fourth Street each dedicated to a different genre (jazz, rock, bluegrass) and there will be satellite areas in Winston Square Park and on Trade St. Food will be plentiful as there will 17 vendors offering a wide variety of street fare. For families, there is a children's area with inflatable attractions, games, face-painting and so on. A $1 wristband gets the children in all night long. Party starts at 6pm.

September 23rd has Betharbra park hosting the Apple Festival. A small festival that will feature a stage and a variety of vendors all focusing on the wonder of that fruit. Worth checking out.

This month sees the start of the 2006-2007 season for the Winston-Salem Symphony Orchestra. Under Robert Moody, the symphony has been revitalised and a variety of programs have been set up to appeal to different tastes: Classical, Plugin Pops and Kicked Back Classics. Venues will be at the Stevens Centre and Reynolda Auditorium. Very good program that is deserving of support.

I should also add that Al Green, R&B and Soul singer extraordinare, will have a concert on Sept 15th at Copening Plaza. In conjunction with the Rock the Block, it is going to be loud downtown that evening. The following week, Lyle Lovett takes over the spot.

Also, Tanglewood is having a chili cookoff with the rubber duck race on Sept 23rd.
