RBC Center

News14 is reporting that the Triangle Business Journal is reporting that there will be a $25 million renovation to the RBC Center over the next 7 years, just on the heels of the Carolina Hurricanes' first profitable season. The renovation will include more office space, a new private club and restaurant, a new jumbotron, new sound system, and other amenities. More details are sure to come today.

Honestly, just bring back Goodberry's and just upgrade the video portion of the jumbotron!

One thing I wish would go in, is a small krispy kreme stand with a miniature hot doughnut line on site. Could you imagine how many they'd sell at hockey and basketball games? I also think KK should have a marketing campaign centered around hockey. They could show a glazed doughnut having just been slapped off the ice with icing dripping behind. The slogans could be "Time for a Nut!" and "Icing is Legal" (or something along those lines)

Sort of like this:

I would like to see a Bronze statue of Roddy holding up the cup right in front. Leave room for the more statues to be added. (who ever the captain is lifting the cup). Kind of like the one of Gretzky in front of Rexall Place.

Overall, I am glad they are doing upgrades. The last thing we want is for the arena to get old and become outdated from a revenue standpoint while other cities are building in the new revenue ideas. We saw that in Charlotte and other places. Kansas city is sitting pretty with a brand new arena (Sprint Arena) with sponsors, sold boxes, all the new revenue ideas with no team of any kind except maybe a few KU basketball games and the next Garth Brooks tour. They are all over the NHL waiting for a team to lean in the wrong direction.

Where boxes and club seats were the revenue generator of the last 10 years, no telling what it will be the next 20 years. I have read where some of the new ideas are the development around the arenas where the owner of the team is involved with that. That is mostly in urban areas where they knock out a large urban section and repalce it with viable new development (see the new Nationals stadium in DC).

Still another is like in Pittsburgh where a casino is in the works and the owners will be part of that.

They do need a new sound system and a new jumbotron is OK. Maybe as more development happens, I guess a restaurant will be good. I have eaten there before a game and it was very good......and not cheap.....

The Hurricanes should be on the hook for most, if not all, additions to the RBC Center.

They're deriving revenue from everywhere possible. How about a $1/ticket for anything at the RBC Center to go towards this. Beyond that, forget it. If Gale Force needs more office space, and they demand them to be built, lets charge them rent.

They do pay rent today and since day one. Also, why would not NCSU be "on the hook." Gale Force runs the arena but does not own it. (actually they invested $40M into it)

$40Million? I've read they've invested no more than $20 Million.

Is NCSU also requesting new offices at the arena? If so, sure they'd also be on the hook.

Does Gale Force collect revenue from parking, concesions, naming rights, etc. Then lets reduce those numbers as a penelty/cost.

Rent right now is $3 mil/year. Why should me, as a tax payer, be on the hook to help out a private company? Yes, I love the canes, but I shouldn't finance more office space.

I guess that Raleigh is becoming an example of a new kind of city? With it's pro sports team and the NC Mus. of Art out of downtown. One possible way to really push this area for more smart growth could be if we added train stops at or near them. It would also greatly benifit downtown as well. I can see it now, someone coming to the new civic center asking for somthing to do is being told about the two above projects, now all they would have to do is hop on the train/other form of mass transit that runs every 15 to 30 minutes and can be back just as quick. I believe that I can support that and be happy! :)

I actually think that's a good thing. We can spend the hundreds of millions of dollars it would take to build a new arena and use it elsewhere. I think that the area around the RBC has a ton of potential in terms of dense development, and the RBC can be its linchpin; this would help us make a case for mass transit.

when the fairgrounds station does open up, i think a sidewalk down youth center dr. is needed. maybe even a pedestrian bridge over hillsborough st. with a paved sidewalk, it would be an easy 10-15 min walk from the TTA stop to carter-finley and RBC center.

i would also like to see a bus route that runs before and after games, taking people to and from the TTA stop, dropping people off in between carter-fin and rbc. it probably would not be the best option as gameday traffic isnt so generous, but still an option to promote use of the train.

I've never had a problem at sold out hockey games getting a space between the far end of the stadium and the RBC Center. If you think you have problems with traffic and problems for the RBC Center, try going to a game at the Dean Dome. It takes at least 5 hours, door-to-door, for us to go to a 2 hour basketball game (we live near North Hills).

That's a 1.2mile walk you're assuming people choose to take when there really isn't a traffic or parking problem to begin with.
