Shreveport/Bossier City Development

I just noticed that the agenda for the Shreveport MPC's July 3 meeting has been posted but links haven't been added yet. Anyway there's a proposal on there for single- and multi-family residential units to be built along the west side of Clyde Fant, about 2,000 ft south of Stoner. A couple years ago there was a big proposal for that property to have a mix of residential options, a hotel, office space, neighborhood shopping, etc. I wonder if this is that same development finally trying to come to fruition.

What!?!? I miss everything...

They say attendance is rising, but IMO if they ever do consider a new baseball stadium, attendance better go up in order to pay for it. Our stadium was nice in its time, but it's now outdated and could stand to be replaced... near CenturyTel Center, though, not on/near the Fairgrounds. I'm glad he somewhat said, without really saying, that he doesn't want it going somewhere like the Fairgrounds (the way the last sentence in the article is worded.)

North Little Rock recently built a new stadium for the Travelers, and a lot of other cities are investing in stadiums again. Actually a stadium in/near downtown would be nice. CenturyTel Center truly should be downtown, but oh well on that. But since CenturyTel is where it is, we really do need to build up a sports complex around it. This would also give him the residential aspect, though not much of a retail aspect. That will follow, though, as I expect retail to eventually kick into high gear in south Bossier.

You know where i want it to go... somewhere downtown, probably on the bossier side b/c of the nice backdrop.... or somewhere along Cross Bayou; to spur development in that area.

Cane's Landing, baby!! I DO want to see the area around CenturyTel build up, preferably with sports complexes, but as another option I'd support Cane's Landing 100%.

This is completely off topic, but I was doing a search on the Bossier City tornado of 1978 and came across your post including the pictures. I would like to "talk" to you more about this because I too lived in that area at the time. I thought it was funny that you were born the same year as my son, and I was just wondering maybe if you two knew each other. We lived in the house that was right next door to the 7 Eleven on Shed Road (I believe it is now a hardware store). Where you anywhere close to that? Also my son went to Meadowview for about three years, so he would have been a classmate of yours.

That's snazzy! Very different from your "Courtyard Suites" and the other hum-drum crap they've been building everywhere. It'll also look great near Bert Kouns/3132, by the Auto Mall. I've been wondering what was going to be built in that spot lately since the SOLD sign went up.

More hotels on Shreveport-Bossier City's horizon

Wow, I didn't know we had so many hotels going up! The article says that there could be nearly 10 more hotels opening in the next two years! It says that there is a Holiday Inn planned for Airline drive. Does anyone know where this will be on Airline? Hopefully all the hotels will look as nice as the Cambria Suites. The Louisiana Downs hotel is also coming along nicely. All the floors are now framed. It is a four story hotel. All these hotels going up is pretty cool!

I've recently stayed at a Hilton Garden Inn in West Monroe and came away pretty impressed by it. It should be a very nice addition to the community of hotels that are being developed in this area.

Roughly 2,000 more rooms, which will bring the number locally to about 10,000. I believe this is twice the amount of rooms we had before the casino industry came here in 1994. Actually before that industry cranked up, hotels were closing left and right... so perhaps this is more than twice the amount.

Either way, it's about time we caught up with the hotel market. This reminds me very much of the "hotel boom" thread over in the Baton Rouge subforum. About time we got ours, too. We had a hotel boom between 1997-2000 when most of our highrise hotels were constructed, but it's slowed down a lot since then. Perhaps this is yet another great sign for our region. I can only hope so. I do feel a little bad about wanting to leave this place, and this hotel boom isn't going to change that, but it does make me feel like our fair cities are finally starting to catch up to everyone else.

FYI I noticed it also says they're working to lure a Holiday Inn to the Youree Drive corridor as well. That would make 2 Holiday Inn locations in southeast Shreveport if they do that.

Hilton Shreveport officials are expected to submit the hotel's occupancy numbers for June at the City Council meeting Aug. 14. The hotel must give council members its occupancy results quarterly, according to the city charter.

"I do know that it's doing very well, though," said Tom Dark, the city's chief administrative officer. "The results are pretty good."

I met a guy at a wedding this weekend who works as a valet there. He loves the job and the money, says they're always busy. I was pleased to hear that.

The port's growth is really impressing me. In addition to the new jobs and expanded operations at the port, Shreveport's quality of life just stepped up a notch with curbside recycling pickup to begin next year.

I'm kinda excited that we're going to have curbside recycling pickup next year. It was also cool to hear that the POSB beat out 20-30 cities around the country to land the new mill. Not quite the cyberspace gig, but, hey, I'll take it...

The article about the Millennium's Ledbetter Studios deserves to be posted here also. The potential for redevelopment on the west side of downtown Shreveport is huge. I realize that this is seedy neighborhood, but I believe this could easily lead to other private investment dollars spent in the immediate area. After seeing the massive transformation of downtown Los Angeles, which used to be one of the most crime-ridden and least desirable areas... all because one developer decided to take a risk 7 yrs ago - the same could happen for LBH. Young, single professionals affliated with the industry who want to be close to work could pioneer the gentrification.

The construction schedule is pretty aggressive... commencement in September with completion in Spring 2008.
