I thought I had posted about this before, but I can't seem to find.

It's a trial project that was announced in Sept. '04 that would generate electricity from wave action in Block Island Sound. Has anyone heard anything about it lately? The press releases from 2004 said they were planning to be operational in early '06.

Billion-dollar wind power plan for R.I. [The Providence Journal]

A study commissioned by Governor Carcieri identifies several areas off the coast of Rhode Island that are suitable for one or more wind farms that could generate enough electricity to supply 15 percent of the state's power demands. RIWINDS, as it's called, would be comparable in scope to the proposed Cape Wind project in Nantucket Sound, and could cost $900 million to $1.9 billion, depending on where the turbines would be located, how many were erected and several other variables.

The Newport Daily News has also come out in support of this plan. The Portsmouth Abbey turbine has been a huge success, and its example has created plenty of support for wind power in Newport County.

Update: PUC OKs increase in gas, electricity rates

As expected, the state Public Utilities Commission has approved a 21.7-percent increase in the price National Grid charges its customers for electricity and an 8-percent increase in the price it charges customers for natural gas.

The combined increases, which go into effect July 15, would raise the average utility bill for a typical home heated by gas by almost $30 a month.
