New Social Services building now officially owned by Guilford County

The Social Services building built as part of a deal that will allow an entity controlled by Action Greensboro to build a minor league baseball stadium in downtown Greensboro is now officially owned by Guilford County, according to public records.

Downtown Greensboro Renaissance LLC, the entity created to build the baseball stadium, transferred the building, along with the 9.8 acres it sits on, to the county for a price of $7.85 million.

The building, at 1203 Maple St., will house about 400 Social Services employees. It was built by Koury Corp. and designed by Moser Mayer Phoenix. The first employees should move in Monday. Once the move is complete sometime around mid-January, the old DSS building will be demolished and construction will imediately begin on the baseball stadium. The first game played in the new ballpark will begin in the spring of 2005.

Guilford County gave Downtown Greensboro Renaissance land and $4.5 million in exchange for the new building.
