The Market District is located in the southwest corner of downtown Austin.

The Market District is centered around Whole Foods 80,000 sf flagship store and corporate headquarters which opened in the spring of 2005.

News 8 Austin: Whole Foods' success contagious

The old Whole Foods store across the street is set for redevelopment. It will contain space for 8-10 retail/resteraunts with REI (Recreational Equipment Inc.) and Anthroplogie already announced. A 5-story 80 ft. tall tower will also be built. However plans have already been scaled back, the tower was originally planned at 120 ft. and a plans for a theater have been cancelled.

Plans are moving forward to replace the old Whole Foods store at the northeast corner of Lamar and Sixth streets. The outdoors store REI will have a 23,000 sf store and Anthropologie will also have a 12,700 sf store. REI plans to be open on November 3rd.

Elsewhere on the site, Austin-based Schlosser Development Corp. plans to build a three-story building with 32,000 square feet of office and retail space. The building would replace one that is the former home the KVET radio station.
