The 2nd Street District is located on the southern edge of downtown and just north of Town Lake. Sidewalks in the district have been widened and lined with trees to make it more inviteing for pedestrian traffic and sidewalk dining. Some of the recent developments in the district include the new Austin City Hall, AMLI Downtown apartments and CSC's two six story office buildings. Future developments include AMLI Phase II (17-18 story residential) and Block 21. In total, about 225,000 sf of retail and restaurant space will be created.

Taverna is a great addition to the district and Austin, in general. The food is authentic Italian (mostly Northern Italian recipes). The atmosphere reminds me of some great off-the-beaten-path restaurants I've frequented in New York, but definitely fits Austin. Speaking of frequent, I think I've dined there a dozen times since it opened and that's only been four weeks.... P.S. Save room for the dessert tray.

Everything in the store will either promote Austin or be locally made. The city has spent about $430,000 to get the store ready to open.

"We just feel like it's another avenue that we can assist our artist community so they are able to stay here, make their products and enjoy Austin," said Jan Stephens, project consultant.
