It’s impressive, but gonna need to increase the population or else there won’t be enough people to fill the jobs.

I met a family, at the Asian Night Market, from Indiana that recently moved to Memphis and the husband will be working at Blue Oval City and his wife is a teacher that will be teaching at MSCS. I don't think the people will be a problem, because the jobs will bring them to the area.. This couple has definitely drunk the Memphis water, because they are spell bound by the city. It's events like the Asian Night Market, Veganfest. Women in Memphis Musicfest etc that help to showcase Memphis, as well as gathering spots like the Ravine, Railgarten, Loftin Yard, and the Carolina Watershed and Overton Square. I think we have capable leadership that can guide us through the coming growth.

That's good to hear.  From all different sources, I've heard/read that the Asian Night Market was an overwhelming success.  Hopefully Blue Oval city and other projects will spur more development that can give the metro area a big boost in growth.

These developments still lack a true public walkable domain.  But its a start.

Yeah, it's just like an isolated pocket of walkability, but at least it looks nice and is a definite improvement.

This was not on my 2024 bingo card. I'm skeptical of everything this man touches, but I hope it ultimately benefits the city.

Why?   He has created the top electric car company and top private space flight companies in the world.  Also, achieved the ability for someone to control a computer mouse with their thoughts.

Memphis will be in close proximity to not just one Buc-ee's, but two with today's announcement.

Buc-ee’s, the destination travel center, is coming to West Memphis with all its perks and size.

The 74,000-square-foot travel center, one of the largest in the region, will be built on 34 acres on the south side of eastbound I-40 and I-55, immediately before I-55 splits to head southbound.

The complex will wrap around the Cracker Barrel and La Quinta Inn & Suites at 1600 and 1550 N. 6th St., said Van Spear, senior vice president at NAI Saig who brokered the deal. The parcels of land were owned by several trusts.

Construction on the Buc-ee’s in Fayette County is expected to begin at about the same time.

The West Memphis store is expected to create about 225 jobs.

Does anybody have the access to what they are saying in this mixed used development for Germantown? I remember the old proposal a few years ago was called Germantown town center. https://dailymemphian.com/subscriber/article/48796/germantown-saddle-creek-area-project-arthur-property-poplar-avenue

The latest pitch for the Arthur family property next to Saddle Creek in Germantown includes a mix of residential, retail, office space, and a hotel. However, concerns over flooding and storm water runoff into adjacent homes have been a challenge to address due to the natural topography of the land itself.

I just saw on the news that people are upset about the Elon Musk facility there. Too many pollutants coming out of the plant. They got that project up fast too.

The issue is with the usage of methane gas turbines to power the site in an area that has long had to deal with the effects of environmental racism with TVA, Valero, and until recently Sterilization Services of Tennessee all operating in the southwestern portion of town for years, with nearby residents having to suffer from health problems as a result.

That is not necessarily true.

The refinery was built in 1941 yet the nearby housing in the Riverview Subdivision wasn’t built until the late 1940’s. Memphis Power and Light became MLGW in 1939 then built the Allen Fossil Plant in 1956 and later sold it to TVA. Yes there were expansions over the years as well as the construction of I-55, but the local politicians and activists barking “hey look at me” is not out of the ordinary for our leadership.

There is a much larger Google facility under construction across the river and we don’t see protests for that facility or the hundreds of idling trucks at the truck stops across the river which are likely far more detrimental to our air and potentially water quality.

In general, factories were constructed along the railroads and riverfront which then generated the need to provide housing for factory workers. Maybe a larger buffer is needed between the industrial and residential land use but this impacted white, black, and immigrant communities in just about every industrialized city and country and across the globe. The conflict of land industrial use is at least partially responsible for why there is zoning.
