Of course there wouldn't be one the weekend of my wedding :(. Glad I didn't hype it beforehand...

- Garris

don't be sad... there's not one the weekend of my wedding either... but there's like a 3 or 4 week gap between the last one in may and the next one in june, so i have hope that they'll find another sponsor and hold it right smack in the middle of that gap... which happens to be my wedding weekend. but i'm not holding my breath.

You'll notice a gap for the entire month of July..Evans has said the economic situation has reduced the number of sponsotrs - but not bad considering the situation. It will bounce back.

yeah, it stinks. i do remember them adding lightings post-schedule-announcement in the past though... my fingers are crossed, but i'm not holding my breath.

Waterfire has become a great Providence signature event which benefits the local economy and creates pride in it's residents. But it also does cause air polution and emits carbon monoxide into the atmosphere. It is like there is a campground downtown with 100 sites all using there fires at the same time. This is an event which is pleasing as an art installation but not environmentally friendly.

i'm sure the fires on the water don't emit nearly as much pollutants as all the cars do... and yet many call for more parking downtown. if there were more trees downtown, the effect of the smoke wouldn't be as harmful to the environment. i think the effect on the water is more harmful for the environment, yet i've seen schools of fish swimming up the river during waterfire.

  • 2 weeks later...

I got the finger from no less than three jaywalkers that night.

Other than coffee milk, waterfire and hot weiners.. There really is nothing more Rhode Island than letting a jaywalker cross the street, and their appreciation for this random act of kindness is either trash talking with hand out and to the side or a middle finger.. I love Providence and its delicate people...

Down here, even when folks have the ROW, they scurry across the road like squirrels on a mission. You certainly do not see a lot of jay-walking. That used to PISS ME OFF to no end--when someone crosses against the light and then freaking saunters across the street like they own it, and tries to stare YOU down. Those are the times when i wish i had just run people over. By mistake of course.

I told one of the three guys that I could still run him over if he wanted me to. He ignored me though.

“One thing we’d really like to do is increase the number of collaborations with other arts and cultural groups,” he says. “Of course, we do that already to some extent. Last year, we partnered with Opera Providence to bring opera singers from all over New England to Providence for a series of performances at WaterFire. But I think we could do a lot more.”

I was happy to read this. I think Waterfire is at its most successful for Waterfire "veterans" when its paired with other ongoing events. It continues to bring people to Waterfire and serves as a showcase for the city's other cultural amenities.
