  1. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-07-19/the-case-for-working-in-silicon-valley-and-living-in-the-rust-belt Another article on the relatively low cost of real estate in Grand Rapids.
  2. Looks like someone agrees... Court rules on big box
  3. Founder's is easy to find here on the San Francisco peninsula. I've even found it in 'discount' grocery stores.
  4. The U.S. Cities Whose Housing Markets Are Likely To Outperform And Underperform In 2016 Forbes lists GR as "outperformer" in 2016
  5. .. and once Lansing completes their sewer separation projects, it should be running pretty clean.
  6. Somewhere there is a thread here with pictures. I know I posted some pics of the buildings just as the skin was being installed.
  7. Although Michigan's Frank Lloyd Wright works are mostly obscure and essentially all residential, the truth is only Illinois and Wisconsin have more surviving structures designed by FLW.
  8. I vaguely remember that the 'onion dome' actually came from a building on Monroe that was torn down to make room for DeVos Hall. I'm trying to find a picture of it..
  9. Barbara Corcoran can be amusing sometimes. Near the end of the segment when they were about to talk about Saginaw (the 3rd city on the top 10 list in Michigan) she prefaces by saying "It's not that I have a thing for Michigan, that's for sure". I don't think that was meant to be an insult, but... "Giant Art Prize Fair" made me lol
  10. "What is Grand Rapids" was a correct response on Jeopardy. The video answer was the location of Gerald R. Ford's Presidential Museum.
  11. Chris Knapp's article threw me a bit by giving the address as 10 Ionia SW . I believe it would have been 10 Ionia NW . I'm still curious about the building in the background of the Cody Hotel photo..
  12. The Pillow Fight was given 30 seconds of the newscast airtime on the local FOX affiliate here in Fort Lauderdale, the anchor stating "...the event bringing good business to the downtown area".
  13. South side of 28th steet just east of Clyde Park, later converted into the short lived Meijer drugstore chain called 'Spaar"
  14. I am also flying back to GR next week. I have found that the airfare to GRR is usually $75 to $150 more than flying to Chicago or Detroit . Since I usually travel alone, it makes sense to pay extra for the convenience (time saved, and I can take The Rapid to my final destination), but if I were traveling with a family of 4, the extra $300-$600 savings would be worth the drive from Detroit or train from Chicago.
  15. Meijer used to sell fabric by the yard. I recently found fabric from Meijer (with price tag still attached, indicating # of yards purchased) while sorting through my mother's old fabric stockpile. Judging by the pattern on the fabric, I would guess it was purchsed in the early 1970's.
  16. But GR's trash pickup is a great deal for small households. I lived alone and recycled everything possible, and only generated 1 bag of trash every 3 to 4 weeks. That was much cheaper than having a monthly bill..
  17. No, farther west. It is in Hoffman Estates on Barrington Rd. just north of I-90. The neighboring municipality of Barrington was fighting the project (something about changing the character of their community). The parcel is in Hoffman Estates, but borders Barrington.
  18. Anyone know the status of the Barrington Rd. store in Hoffman Estates, IL? I used to drive by it almost daily when I lived in the area about 3 years ago. The site was prepared, but the store construction had been delayed. Any progress?
  19. On the Universal Price Code (scanning barcode) the first 5 digits of Meijer brand products are "41250" IIRC.
  20. If it makes you feel better, it has been cloudy here today, with scattered thunderstorms, and (only) 80
