    The West End

I borrowed this picture from one of RT's posts. I was a little disappointed to read that they will be renovating this building rather than redeveloping this site. If anything does not fit in the west end, it is this big glass box stuck in the middle of the site, surrounded by parking. It would have been nice to see new buildings along Field St and Vardry St, with the parking on the interior. I could picture a mix of small scale retail with offices above. A sandwich shop or other eating establishment might work well being right across the street from the high school. The article does say that they are planning improvements to the outside of the building. Any thoughts?
  3. Work has begun this week on remodeling the old Burger King building.
  4. Here are a couple of shots I took this afternoon of the main apartment buildings coming down. From what I've heard, they are no longer planning on burning any of the buildings down. The stuff being torn out of the buildings was done as a part of asbestos removal.

    The West End

I heard some interesting information on these buildings at 702 and 704 South Main Street, on the corner of S. Main & River St. The owner is seeking permission from the city to demolish the buildings in order to replace them with a new building. From what they say, the structure is in bad shape and it will be more economical to rebuild them. The new elevation matches the windows, brickwork, and cornice of the existing buildings, and has two additional floors above. There is also a new building filling in the vacant lot to the left, which will match the buildings to either side of it.
  6. I heard something about a design competition, but I'm not sure what the process will be yet.
  7. Yesterday the DPC approved the banner on the side of the Liberty Square Parking Garage. It is to be a piece of public art with a 'Liberty' theme. The final design is yet to be determined and still must be approved by the DPC.
  8. I know that when Overbrook was first developed, it was connected to downtown by a trolley line. Perhaps that bridge was part of where the track used to go. Anyone know?
  9. Is that second photo of the old bridge abutment in the Overbrook neighborhood?
  10. This is my first post, but I have enjoyed following this site for a while now. Downtown Greenville is one of the big reasons I decided to stay here after finishing up at Clemson. Here's a slightly different take on the Daniel Building from this past weekend.
