  1. Is this a regular rec center? What are they suppose to have there? Thanks for the pic dude.

Here's some more information on it:

"James River Architects has been selected to provide architectural services for the new recreation center planned for the north end area of Newport News. The project will include a large gymnasium component consisting of three full-size gyms, an indoor track and several multipurpose rooms, some that will accommodate up to 500 people and some that are sized for dance or fitness classes. The natatorium will include an indoor pool of approximately 50 x 25 meters for use by seniors, schools and the general public. The pool will be used for lap swimming, water aerobics, swim classes and therapeutic recreation programs, as well as a water playground."

  2. Hopefully, they will get smart and buy the farm across Oriana for possible expansion. If they do this they will have all the land to plop down two-two mile runways which is more than enough to carry them into many decades, and handle almost any aircraft with a possible exception of the new double decker by airbus.

I think airport expansion is reason for government to acquire private land. Do yall have an info on that?

  3. Thanks for info! I just got back from Norfolk and was able to have brunch at Cowboy Syds at Port Warwick. Must say I was very impressed with the layout of the development. I really enjoyed the little town square and the interesting statues.

We had no problem getting seating at Cowboy Syds and I must say the salmon steak that I had was wonderful. I definately look forward to going back.

Glad to hear you enjoyed it

  4. Hey can anyone tell me about Cowboy Syds? It appears to be a new restaurant in Newport News started by the same guy who use to run the Dumbwaiter in Downtown Norfolk. I would love to go there for brunch on my way to Norfolk this weekend.

It's a new American cuisine restaurant. Gourmet food and food not so gourmet. It has awesome outdoor seating in the heart of Styron Square, and above it are residential balconies garnished with ivy and outdoor patio wear. It is normally busy on weekends. Cowboy Sids and Schleshingers or whatever are kinda pricey. Then there is a Tapas restaurant there also with late-night music and a club/bar atmosphere. Check it out. I hear a food market is on its way to Port Warwick with outdoor stands. Fresh fruit and flowers a short walk from ones home. Port Warwick will have a lot to offer cityfolk looking to move to Hampton Roads especially with talks of light rail and a pedestrian-friendly roundabout between it and City Center.

  5. Ok, Hecht's is going to become a MAcy's, not Dillard's, my bad.

Here's the article. But, you have to be a registered user to access it.

I see you left off the Walmart dollars!:P

That's because they probably couldnt fit on the page.

  6. So I guess Macy's has scaled down and is the equivalent of a Hecht's now? I would never shop there but its good for the area.

No, Macy's didnt scale down, they expanded their empire. Maybe it is Hecht's, not Dillards. Not sure Vdogg. Whichever is attached to Coliseum.

  7. Macy's bought Dillards. Coliseum has a Dillards. Supposedly, all Dillard's, that Macy's decides to keep open, will turn into Macy's.

I can see it now... Thanksgiving Day parade down Coliseum dr. Huge floats and crowds.

Ok, I just brought my head out of the clouds

  8. Where in the world did you hear that at? I would normally doubt it but with all the stuff I've been hearing lately....I just don't know.

  9. That would be a perfect location for that sized tower (or building whichever u call it). I would prefer to see height stepped up to downtown with the tallest in the core (however Granby will change this dynamic quite a bit so all bets are off).

I think Granby Tower may spawn a whole other "downtown." Seperate from business, kinda like East and West Manhattan. Manhattan has a recreational downtown and a business district downtown. Granby Tower may unintentionally create this with Residential Towers, more life. Every big city has a business and then a residential downtown.

  10. A small plot of land means you build tall and thin, not short and fat. If you ask me we need to enroll norfolks buildings in a Jenny craig program. I think that by the time this is built, market forces will demand far more efficient use of that land anyway.

Im totally with you on that one Vdogg! They need go on the Adkins Diet!

  11. I assume you meant "40 story quality" and I wholeheartedly agree. I actually cannot see how they could justify a 12 story building in that location and still claim there's a land shortage with a straight face.

Thats like building a 30 story tower in Wall Street.

  12. The Kirn Library is being destroyed? I have heard rumblings about this before. As ugly as the Kirn is, I still think it needs to be preserved.

That ugly library. A downtown library should be made of heavy granite and should be a local landmark, not a black box.

  13. I posted an article today from Sunday's Pilot. Its in the "Norfolk Transportation" thread. Its focus is on Norfolk's light rail plan. It mentions a 12 story building on the site of the Kirn library that ties in with the light rail system.

I'll be very disappointed if they put a pityful 12 story building there. That's a 40 story tower quality plot of land. I hope they do not depreciate downtown with a 12 story box in the business district. It better make a huge statement if only 12 stories.
