Watson proposed retractable roof baseball stadium, new arena, and racing grand prix...The timing of the proposal will probably cripple the Downtown venues vote...
http://www.orlandosentinel.com/community/n...rl_tab01_layout
The sad thing is this is a crap proposal with no legs.

Hands down the Vue is the ugliest building I've seen put together since this. http://miami.metblogs.com/archives/images/...nivalcenter.jpg

There is a meeting/informational get together tonight at the admin building in downtown on Rosalind Street, about the proposed OPAC, Citrus Bowl, and Events Center project, i believe it starts at 7pm. If you are in favor of the OPAC and Arena come on down if not stay home please.
I've heard good things. How was your expirience?
-
As far as the Arena goes, does anyone know of any precedent of someone with Devos level of money financing it privately and running it as a private enterprise. Keeping all revenue (tickets, concerts, concessions, etc)?
Seems to me if the country drives too hard of a deal, he could build this out of his pocket change and then keep all the money for himself.
There are a few.
Bill Davidson has done it twice. Once for the Detroit Pistons and once for the Tampa Bay Lightning. He did this after fighting with the city of Detroit over his arena in the early 80s.

FCS, The Orlando Magic, and Orlando Arts have started a petition for support.
If you agree feel free to sign: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/orlandocommunityvenues/

Shard,
I am hearing its still a little over $50M; any overrun, and be a cosurety on the bond. I think there is less money from boxes and parking, etc.
This same source (which I cannot reveal) was right about the initial offer to the arena and PAC.
Whether they are right on this we'll see. I'm not 100% sure.
-
Open Bid, they beat out Icon Venue for the job.
-
Yes I know the pyramids were built more efficiently and faster than a Turner project, but it's a step...
-
Update: Turner Construction has been selected to build the new arena (if the funding comes through)
Least that is taken care of.
-
They have almost 1500 $10 tix available too.
-
HOK (Architects are designing it)
They have started designing. The cost is based on projections of what the venue is going to include 800,000 SqFt, suites, etc. They have made the projection I believe.

There were several points that I did not know myself and several commitments made to Orlando if they built an area.
1) Professional Bull Riding - Week long International Championship held at new arena, will be a major event on the PBR.
2) NCAA - will return to Orlando with 1st/2nd round AND Regional matchups in the NCAA men's and women's basketball tourny, along with several other NCAA sanctioned events.
3) Conference - ACC/MEAC pledged that they will put Orlando at the top of their lists as possible sites for conference championships. (MEAC championship, be it smaller schools is very successful event)
4) David Stern - Orlando guarenteed to get an Allstar game and will be on a rotation for this game as the NBA tries to rotate the game like the Super Bowl.
5) Magic - Cannot give EXACT number as there is too much to still plan before giving the number (location, size, etc.) Will give more than most NBA teams have given in the past. Further...They will pay any OVERRUN in the $385 Million construction cost.
The Magic also pledged a large donation to the PAC and will help the FCS to obtain a BCS game with refurbished Citrus Bowl.
Seemed well received.

Next week, September 12th.

It had to be the "Capital One Bowl" because of the deal with Florida Citrus industry. When they dropped they got to take the name I believe.
-
Yeah, but wouldn't you say that you lean ever so slightly towards being more of sports fan than let's say a fan of the opera, Magicfan95?
With this approach, the arena people should get indoor fireworks, booze, and hookers to present to the Orange County Commissioners and they should be able to attain all the funds.
Actually my brother is a local performer who has performed at the Carr, SACS, and Lake Eola (shakespeare) and several other venues in the area. Thus the reason I am so big on the PAC getting done. However, the presentation was very bland.
I didn't mean to sound like I was leaning towards the Citrus Bowl. Would I like to see it done? Yes. Is it the priority in my book? No.
I think the problems come from the fact that the fact that we will lose the quality of the bowl games if they don't fix the stadium. Whereas the Broadway Series and Symphony aren't leaving. Thus the reasons the PAC doesn't seem as urgent to the commissioners
-
Gotta add to the fact that the Big 10 and SEC commissioners told the country commission directly that they would pull the Cap One Bowl's 2nd Big Ten and 2nd SEC selections. As of now it's the biggest game outside the BCS.
In my belief, in the end the PAC will get priority over the Citrus Bowl. However, I personally thought the Citrus Bowl presentation was better than the PAC. I almost fell asleep trying to take notes on that one.
-
I think the PAC is going to be in phases regardless.
-
I doubt that any of the three will make money. Maxwell's suspicion was that county officials are more susceptible to the fear of losing major tenants like the Magic and the bowl games. So his suggestion was that the symphony orchestra should threaten to leave if they don't get a new facility.
I don't think any of the facilities will make money either. However, because of the high cost of running and keeping up the facility, factored into other things PAC around the country have lost millions at times. While being used by less than 5% of most communities, the reason comes from the fact that most shows at a PAC only draw from small demographics.
I put the PAC as number 2 on my priority list of the three venues. I would love to see SOMETHING other than the Carr.

Isnt UCF be able to build a new stadium with less money than the cost to renovate the citrus bowl?
Yes, and UCF's new stadium will be nice, but it's a basic steel frame stadium with 45,000 seats and a few club seats and suites. Mostly bench seating.
The Citrus Bowl is talking about creating an enclosed facility. Redoing most the seating from benches to chairs, expanding some areas, adding a lot of suites, etc.
It's a much more extenstive and larger project, thus the reason it costs so much more.
-
That's probably because it's been proven that PACs lose more money than any other public venues built.
If you notice they haven't really said much about how much money the PAC can make. Whereas theCitrus Bowl and Arena have made that a major issue.
That being said a new PAC is needed.

Well said Rescue, a few months ago I found the 1995 NFL study of Orlando and I posted some of the results on here.
One thing that had them concerned was the amount of people that work (or were projected to work) in the service industries. Thus working Nights and Weekends.
-
not Vegas, b/c of the whole gambling stigma; they've beat that dead horse over and over.
LA, sure, but why did they lose 2 NFL teams? So strange, and now, the Angels have reidentified themselves yet again as the LA Angels.?
San Antonio- I can see that. But the Texans' franchise sucks. They should have kept the Oilers' history ala the Browns in Houston and resurrected the franchise. As a result, it looks like a generic state of football save the Cowboys' franchise.
Florida has the advantage of the Dolphins and Bucs and Jags now having given consistency of franchise since 1995-96 when the Jags started and since the '60's with the 'fins.
Orlando has more than Jax- except for an owner/investor at the moment looking to land a team. The stadium deal is doable. We've got the infrastructure, yah dee yah dah. It could be like the Redskins/Colts of old/Ravens, or Jets/Giants/Pats/Eagles with regards to relative distances.
ORL needs to further establish the city center to turn heads for future expansion.
That's why I said "dare I say" I think the NFL in LA would lead to a lot of stipulations and probably won't happen.
The difference with the location you cite with the other teams is the fact that they were established NFL markets. After the Colts darted from Baltimore, the city never really accepted the Redskins as a team.
I won't say Orlando WON'T ever get an NFL team, but 15-20% of Bucs season ticket holders live in the Orlando TV market, and the market draws ratings for the Bucs comparable to Tampa. I seriously doubt the Glazers (Bucs Owners) and the fraternity that is NFL owners (they're very very close knit) approve a team in Orlando without some type of huge reprecussion deal.
-
It's a nice TV market, but the market gets high ratings for the Bucs games. And while they could put a team here and it could do decent, the NFL would much rather have teams in cities without high ratings for a local team.
LA, Portland, San Antonio, and dare I say Vegas are all much more attractive markets as a result.
-
Maybe we can share the Bucs and called it Central Florida Bucs and rotate the game between Tampa and Orlando.
Won't ever happen. They are extremely successful in Tampa and their stadium deal requires them to play every home game there, including preseason to help make pay the financing.

The Magic has selected HOK to design the arena.
HOK is one of the leading sports venue designers in America these days. They have designed Philips Arena (Atlanta), Pepsi Center (Denver), and locally UCF's new arena.
Most their work has come from baseball, but they have built the "modern gems" like AT&T Park (San Fran), PNC (Pittsburgh) and Camden Yards (Baltimore)
If you want to see some of their work. http://www.hoksport.com/projects/index.html#
Reminder, this all means nothing if the vote doesn't pass, so if you haven't sent letters to the commissioners and would like to visit orlando-arena.blogspot.com for a prewritten form and addresses (email and snail) of the commissioners. Every voice counts!
