Gusterfell

Looking toward the former Durfee High School in Fall River, Mass. The bridge in the foreground carries I-195 over the Taunton River. Fall River is a rather blighted old mill town, but it has lots of great 19th century architecture and a gorgeous natural seting, with plenty of hills and water views. It has tons of potential, if it can shake off its doldrums. Given enough investment, I could even see it becoming a miniature, east coast version of San Francisco. One of these days, I'll start a Fall River photo thread to show what I mean.

The Providence skyline from Portsmouth, RI, across Narragansett Bay. The distance is somewhere around fifteen miles. This view will change quite a bit in the next couple years, as the city's new tallest will be built between the two tallest towers, and the Westin Hotel (brick tower to the left) will get a slightly taller second tower. If you look closely, the yellow crane is just visible immediately to its right.

I thought I'd share this distant skyline view I took a few weeks ago, as a test of my new telephoto lens. This is from the Portsmouth waterfront at Cory's Ln. If you look very closely, you can just make out the cranes of the Waterplace condos and Westin II.

That was around 2:30-ish this afternoon. The lighting was indeed very harsh. That was the darkest of about five different attempts at the shot. EDIT: I meant to post this one as well, continuing the theme of newly-opened views:

I can count on one finger the number of times I've agreed with David Brussat on anything, but he got one thing right in last week's column. The views opened up by the demolition for One Ten are certainly dramatic: A couple more random shots from today:

Yep. It was built in 1890. It was designed by the well-known architect Henry Hobson Richardson, but it wasn't actually built until several years after his death. The lighthouse was built low on the cliff so it wouldn't block the view from a nearby mansion. Victorian NIMBYisim at work.

Thanks for the kind words! Yep, I was on the third floor. Didn't get to the top of the tower, but I can just imagine the view from there! vdogg, the Harbors Edge shot was from the pier behind Nauticus... where the cruise ship terminal is going, I believe. Question for you guys: In my pic of the skyline from ODU, there are three sets of cranes. I presume the first two are the Trader Building and Harbor Heights... what is the third?

Hi all! I spent the holidays visiting family in Hampton Roads. I didn't get downtown too much, but I was able to take a few good pics. Enjoy! ODU: This corridor reminds me a bit of a Gothic cathedral: Looking downtown from a classroom window: Downtown: This was the first time I really spent walking around downtown, and I was quite impressed.

A couple months ago I took a shot of the skyline from the skating center on a rainy day. The lighting wasn't the best, and it was basically a throw-away pic, except for the reflection in the concrete. This is the reflection, cropped and flipped vertically.

Thanks! To get that second pic, I had to cross behind the "sidewalk closed" barrier to avoid a bunch of loiterers. A cop gave me a funny look, but he didn't say anything.

I was on top of the little garage at Weybossett and Empire. Is that the one you mean, Cotuit? I love the way the skyline from that angle looks like a jumble of blocks building up into a pyramid shape. You got some incredible shots that night. Pure photographic gold!

Thanks for the kind words! I'll post some more later. I use a Kodak Easyshare DX4330. Pretty basic point-and-shoot camera, but it takes decent pictures. I like it well enough, though I'd like to upgrade to something a little more versatile in the near future.
