    Americans are undertaxed.  Period.

Taxes are lower now than at any time since before the Depression.
everything is crumbling around us and before the ink even dries on the stimulus and rebate checks that we receive, under every administration since I’ve been alive, people are beotching about being overtaxed.

“High” tax states fare better by every single metric.   NC and TN are crap holes, unless you love inequality, crime, divorce , trailers, unhealthy and dumb people.

This is the kind of rediculous venom that poisons reasonable conversation. You realize of course that people are flocking from "high tax" states to NC an TN in droves right? theyre probably all just dumb fat people right? Why be a hater - especially on a forum like this? Youre statement about taxes being lower now than since the 30s just silly - what data are you looking at? whether fed income tax or total tax burden, thats just not true. Why spread untruths to justify your disdain of millions of people ? WTF? These posts dont do arguments justice so I apologize if Im overreacting but it sounds like your injecting your bitter politics into a development forum. Ill make the offer again, I'll buy you lunch if you want to have a more productive (and interesting) conversation

We're 1,683 residents behind Norfolk - and if 2023's trends hold -- or (hopefully) increase directionally -- in 2024, we'll surge past them this year - the first time that the River City will have a larger population than the Mermaid City since the 1950s. Even with all of that, we still trail Chesapeake by a considerable margin, and they picked up 1,500 or so residents in 2023 and are really surging. They're somewhat of a surprise - kinda the "dark horse" that slipped through along the rail while everyone's attention was on the bigger "name" horses (or cities, in this case).

ALSO - I 100% agree, @rjp212 that RVA's numbers are low. I've maintained that the census tallies were at least a good 7,000-plus short in 2020 due to all the problems even taking the census. IF in fact that's the case, our "real" number should actually be checking in somewhere north of 237K, not just under 230K.

We'll see if there's a "true-up" in the 2030 census. If I were a betting man, I'd hedge my bet that there will be.

lol - as for Richmond's numbers being low, Im in the city and never got around to filling out those census forms in 2000 :)

  3. Hey, I apologize if I came off harshly. I would distinguish european colonialism from Christianity - though I understand not everyone does. (I was trying to imagine how loving someone too much or turning the other cheek too quickly wiped out ancient african civilizations). The world changing subversion of normal power structures (the first shall be last, last shall be first etc.) had a huge positive impact on humanity, though that doesnt discount all the horrible things greedy people have done using religion (in general) as "cover". This isnt the place for this, if you're at all interested let me buy you lunch sometime and we can talk about all kinds of cool stuff :)

Edit: I want to just say how wonderful it is that we are talking about this. We are not only challenging each other but also educating each other by spreading new knowledge that many of us (including myself) didn't know before. The national African museum is already doing its job and it hasn't even been built yet and this is a prime example - love it!

    Amen brother

  4. sorry I know this isnt the right place for this, but bigotry has to be called out - what ancient African civilizations do you think were "wiped away on purpose" by "Christianity"?

  5. one underappreciated blow to future growth of the midatlantic region in general and Richmond in particular was Dominion's cancelling of the pipeline project over the mountians. There will be lots of manufacturing "reshoring" in the coming years but that requires cheap energy. We were set to benefit greatly, but wont happen now as the cheap energy goes NW and NE intead of E and SE. Not to say we cant have niche industry, but the big stuff cant happen here because of the lack of cheap energy at the kind of scale the pipeline would have brought. oh well...

  6. I think its a nice addition to the ecosystem down there - another reason for people to head that way, an active lifestyle draw. Ive always tried to support the restaraunts down there and love accessing the pipeline down there behind the flood wall - but its always been very underutilized. Maybe some of the folks going down for pickleball will have lunch at Casa del Barco after...

Hate to be that person, but where do they expect people to park at? Costar, Manchester entrance to River, Canoe Run, or somewhere else? I know there's some parking now, but I can imagine the people in Oregon Hill is going to have a fit over this once this really pull in big crowds of people (they already do it on days like this).

no sweat - theres more people than that at a typical friday cheers and parking isnt a problem (though you may have to walk a few blocks)

  8. sorry to see them go, but honestly as a guy that lives just a few miles west of there and eats out a lot I thought about checking it out but never did. I cant stand the QR code ordering and why would you go to a food court and pay restaurant prices instead of going to an actual restaurant? If you lived in one of those apartments (which a growing number of people do) and it was cheaper than going to a real restaurant (which evidently it wasnt) I could see it working - but why would you drive down there for that? Im glad to see people trying different things and seeing what works but I wouldnt read much into this not working out...

VPM has closed on the deal to purchase the Arts District site of their new downtown public broadcasting headquarters and studios. According to Jack Jacobs' reporting in today's RBS - the public media nonprofit payed $4.2 million for the site at 13-17 E. Broad Street. The five-story, 53,700 sq foot building is slated to break ground this spring. VERY exciting to see this project moving forward - and even more exciting that there will be live broadcast media returning to downtown after an absence of at least six decades.

    From today's Richmond BizSense:

    vpm building rendering broad street

I think this is going to look great on that block - I love the angled roof

  10. I like the idea of the live-work spaces. Are there any examples of that already in Richmond? makes sense in an era where alot of buildings are adding residential floors above first floor commercial space...

  11. I get it - and I dont disagree with anything you say about the matter, though I think you overstate it a little. I remember some fun friday cheers events doen there in the 80's, and Ive been part of whats a pretty bustling biotech environment in that neighborhood for the past 20 years with plenty of lunches/happy hours etc. Broad street, jackson ward.... I agree we could do better down there and dont begrudge any visions ie city center - bring it on! I was just commenting on not really understanding what seems to be a visceral hatred of the asthetics of the place expressed by some...

  12. I never understood the hate the coliseum gets. While not as nice as Hampton it has the same spaceship vibe and I always thought it looked pretty cool (poor acoustics for a concert though). Ive spent alot of time over the years in festival park there -walks at lunchtime and even a group exercise thing a few years ago- and always thought it was underappreciated...

VCU has agreed to pay a local construction company $4.8M to demolish the Public Safety Building in Block-D downtown. According to reporting in today's RT-D, demo work is expected to be completed by March. HOWEVER - one somewhat sobering nugget regarding future development of the site:

VCU Health expressed interest in building a new $415 million school of dentistry at the site. But earlier this year, the General Assembly declined to give VCU Health the approval to begin designing a building.

Sooooooo... don't look for any excavators or cranes on that site anytime soon, folks.

The demo agreement is included (link below). Photos (including a VERY outdated aerial shot of downtown) courtesy of the RT-D.

Great picture by the way! Glad to see that building coming down - I hope we dont have to wait too long for something impressive to rise there. Unfortunately Im not surprised the state isnt jumping right in to give VCU more money for that before the dust has settled on understanding how they lost $100 mil with nothing to show for it. I bet they'll work that issue through and change the way these projects are managed before anything really starts to move there...

  14. While some here may not like it (😆) thats basically a median strip - lose the billborads and plant some trees!  So many people's only opinion of Richmond is when they drive through on 95 - and its alweays been pretty rough. its come some way in the past decade but some beautification right there in particular would be nice, kind of a gateway/natural wall between the highway and Diamond District (Im willing to be in the minority in this opinion here - being right kind of takes the edge off :)) With that said, I dont know if Diamond District Partners would be interested - I wouldnt want the city involved. Maybe a "make RVA awesome" non-profit...

Nice write-up in today's Henrico Citizen about the new Monopoly - Richmond Edition - game, focusing on some notable Henrico attractions and features, such as the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, RIR and U. of R. (the campus straddles the city/county line).

PERSONAL NOTE: My game has shipped :tw_smiley: - and I'm thrilled to report, is scheduled to arrive here in my humble abode in the Windy City tomorrow by 7 p.m. Central time. With everyone's permission, I'll do a "virtual unboxing" via some photos of the game as soon as I can.

Until then - the article from today's Henrico Citizen:
