This is great news! I feel like they could almost do something "semi-permanent" in one of the older buildings not yet scheduled for renovation instead of just doing tents in a parking lot. Either way, looking forward to walking across the street for fresh veggies!

While walking on my local trail the other day--in lieu of being able to go to the gym--I had an idea:

What if Discovery Place, affiliated organizations and arts groups worked with the parks and rec department to create a series of meaningful installations along each greenway in Charlotte? Specifically, utilizing the linear nature of the trails to convey important narratives with proper scope and scale, in regards to time or distance.

I specifically mention Discovery Place because I think a great one to start with--and which I recognize could be a victim of its own success if it ends up clogging the trails with too many tykes and families--but maybe you widen the trail?--would be a Paleontology trail, charting the story of dinosaurs, with accurate measures of time, in feet, to convey to kids the scope of paleontological (?) history. (Obviously, this being the South any mentions of human evolution would have to be avoided.) Younger kids could be awed by (accurate--with feathers!) statues of dinosaurs from different epochs, and important geological and climatological events could be represented therein, like the Yucatan meteorite, etc.

Another trail could present the solar system, again, in accurate scale--both the sizes of the planets and their distances to one another.

Yet another could be more 'pedestrian'--but chronologically presenting local history--I know the statues by the greenway on the western edge of Elizabeth (I refuse to type Midtown) present local figures--but either independently or re-positioning those statues, telling the story of Mecklenburg, so many feet by so many feet.

There are of course many other things that could be presented, but the paleontologocial and universal ones were the first ones to come to mind.

This sounds like a very cool idea! One based on Charlotte history for sure would be cool. Could even have it tailored to certain areas that highlight items specific to that physical location along with where it was in time.

Similar vantage point to @Rickybobby's photo above, but taken in the early Saturday AM hours.  My new phone background!

I like how that one electric tower extends up into the skyline in the shape of a cool building. Would be awesome to have something actually that size and shape filling that void in the skyline!

My only 2 month old BB&T HELOC is now closed! Truist this is for you emoji1603.pngemoji1603.png

Btw really should look at Third Federal if in the market for a HELOC. Really awesome rates!

Interesting! We just paid down our balance on a HELOC with BB&T/Truist that we got earlier this year. I wanted to close it out but my wife  convinced me to keep it open. What kind of rate did you get at Third Federal if you dont mind me asking? We felt out rate with BB&T was really good but all in all wasnt happy with the service and hoops we had to jump through to pay off the balance.

I would say they focus on strange, and often spiced styles. They do a pretty good job, but the lineup is generally a bit out there - basically in the vein of fonta flora, but a smaller lineup (and not as good as FF).

The Cream of the Crop is a great cream ale and not what I would consider "out there" at all!

This is awesome! I've heard of the general plans from many different folks but this finally helps me visualize it all! Any one find any further details other than just this picture? Would like to better understand some of the make up of the multifamily housing.

  7. Stopped by Petty Thieves brewery last night. Very impressed. They did a great job with the interior, adding a bunch of old looking woodwork and a bit of a gothic feel to the décor.  I had their nitro porter, lower on the end of ABV but it was a great beer.

The view off the patio is one of the best for breweries in town if you ask me!

thats the area and I am talking about the huge parking area to left and again just a temporary thing.  eventually they plan to build on it but I think it is a few years off.

Hey @KJHburg it looks like something very similar to what you hoped for is starting this thursday! They are doing movies outdoors for the next couple weeks. Two different movies at 7 and then 9! At 400  Camp Rd which I believe is the old Ford Building or what they call Raceway?

They’re opening this weekend and held a soft open this past weekend. Nice little space and soliddddd beers

The interior looked very interesting when I stopped by on Monday. Was hoping they would sell me some to-go beer for softball but they were hard at work setting up the taproom still. Definitely will stop by there this weekend. Im about burnt out on Heist Barrel Arts current offering.

Anyone know when Free Range at CampNorthEnd is supposed to open?

  10. I work for an industrial supplier that is just further down Mint st from this picture. Every time we have had senior leadership visit in the past couple years I have asked about us considering selling as this area continues to boom. We have historically owned the properties that we operate out of and this location has been around a good while. I do see another entity outside of ours listed when I look it up on Polaris 3G though, so its possible we dont fully outright own this one either. I just imagine for as long as we have been there we are sitting on a gold mine.

Except that Statesville Ave.  doesn't really help you between NoDa and and anywhere, does it?

My business is across the street from CarQuest and The Pilot Station. We're wholesale only so, while I appreciate your offer to patronize, we don't sell retail.  I'm like you though, I definitely buy local when I can.  We have about 8 acres there.  Regards and thanks for your nice reply.

Right now unless I am going into the the city then I really only cross over Statesville. I can access Nevin rd from Brightwalk neighborhood side streets and that gets me to NoDa but those streets are very narrow with bad sidewalks. I would be fine with any type of trail or lane from the city out to just CNE and then something going more east-west that would have easier access to the lightrail/railtrail.

Im not specifically advocating for a road diet, I just think we need better non-vehicle infrastructure on this end of town. Hope business is going well for you!

within a week and I drove through that huge parking lot of statesville road and did not see any of that.  Maybe we are not talking about the same places.

Fairly certain we are talking about the same area. Just rode my bike up and took this picture. Certainly still a lot of parking lot space open just think it would be a stretch for a drive in movie theater.

I have a business on Statesville Ave.  Watching Statesville Ave all day, I can probably  count the bicyclists on one hand I see riding. On the other hand, I see tons of delivery trucks, buses and of course commuters opting out of I-77.  It just seems so selfish to me for bikes to claim the only north-south alternative to I-77.   You can't imagine what it's like when there's an accident on 77.

Tell your buddy to at least draw in turn out lanes for the buses so that when they stop to pick up passengers, lines don't form 1/4 mile behind them. Sometimes, when the the buses are ahead of their schedules, the drivers will actually stall at the stops waiting for the clock to catch up.  All kinds of folks are trying to jump the traffic island in the middle of Statesville trying to get around them.

    Thumbs down from me.

I dont think he is at the level to suggest any type of change unfortunately. Just overseeing the day to day operations.

Mind sharing what business you own? Always trying to keep my money spent as local as possible!

I do understand your frustration with taking a lane from a major north-south corridor. I am one of the bike riders you probably do see from time to time though and protected bike access into the city and in the direction of NoDa would go a long way for keeping my car parked a lot more. The bike lanes as is are a disaster anyways due to lack of funding from the NCDOT to be able to clean them.

Yes my idea is a temporary solution as movie theaters are still closed and that spot is perfect for a drive in.  it could be set up in days.

When was the last time you drove by? That area is already under construction to some degree. All the exterior fencing is down, trees are being removed by the roads and the work to expand the Oaklawn/Statesville intersection is already underway.

There is a lot of space in the parking lot on the North Graham side too though.

Boy, would I like to bend his ear over that 1/4 mile section on Statesville that's had a "diet" for the bikes.

I believe the more of Statesville will be like that in the long term. Not sure if it will be down to one road the whole way through but better sidewalks, bike lanes and medians are what he described to me as in the plan for both Statesveill and North Graham, just not sure how far up those roads it will go. Next time I see him I will see what further information I can get.

I think this is a great idea a huge drive in movie on the huge paved lot on the Statesville Rd side of Camp North End.   Using shipping containers for the side of the screen.   The Charlotte skyline would be in the background behind the stacks of containers.

Saw this in Houston Biz Journal

""The Houston-based developer partnered with Houston-based Moonstruck to create Moonstruck Drive-In Cinema at East River. Moonstruck itself is a collaboration between Texas-based inflatable movies company Blue Moon Cinemas and Hockley's Showboat Drive-In, the only permanent drive-in cinema in the greater Houston area.  Moonstruck Drive-In Cinema at East River will show movies projected on a 40-foot-by-80-foot structure made of shipping containers. Local food trucks and Historic Fifth Ward and East End establishments will provide food for purchase. Tickets start at $25 per car and will be available later this week at moonstruckdrivein.com.

Both tickets and food purchases will be no-contact, according to a press release. There will be portable restrooms on-site, and attendees are "encouraged to wear masks and practice social distancing protocols," the release states.  Unlike many temporary drive-ins that have popped up amid the Covid-19 pandemic, the East River site will show new releases, starting with Christopher Nolan's "Tenet" as part of a double feature with "Bill and Ted Face the Music" or "Inside Out" Sept. 4-7. The first movies will start at approximately 8:30 p.m., but the entrance at 100 Bringhurst St. opens at 7 p.m.""

anyone else think this would be a great idea have food vendors from Camp Northend and others selling food.

To my understanding, Oaklawn is in the process of being extended to go through the intersection with Statesville and into that main parking lot. I have a good friend who is overseeing some of the road work all throughout CNE as well as North Graham and Statesville coming out of the city. All roads are getting updated, North Graham and statesville will get similar work to what North Tryon is seeing now.

Im sure your idea is to some degree temporary but I have a feeling that large parking lot is going to see a lot of changes in the coming months/year. I currently live in some of the newer townhomes in Brightwalk that are closest to CNE.
