  1. Took a look at Venture Realty's website. I can see why this piece of horse squeeze looks like a retail shopping center. They have completed way more suburban retail projects vs. urban multi-family to include Wal-Marts, Targets and Home Depots. This is why "Building 1" looks like a Wal-Mart anchor and "Building 2" looks like smaller retail outparcels surrounded by a parking lot.

I hope the city does not approve this mess. I pray that someone within the city has an urban planning bone in their body. Or please get in a car and go visit a city up north for inspiration.

  2. I'm curious what their spiel is when they approach citizens to try and get these "signatures"? Let's be honest, a vast majority of people are pretty ignorant on many issues. They can be influenced very easily with just a quick "shock value" type sentence or statement. You can easily paint the casino and the gambling industry into a nuclear bomb making factory next to a ball field.

  3. I don't know how transparent the city is being but I can tell you that the first article was written and then posted on this site Dec. 19th 2018. I'm sure the talks with the city began long before the article. My guesstimate is we are working on almost a full year the city has been in talks with this tribe about the development.

  4. Can anyone list the things she has accomplished as a representative for her district? I've tried to find some but I keep getting "She fights for this and that", "She likes this and that". Well I like ice cream and fight for 3 day weekends but it doesn't make me a representative. I understand she fights for school repairs and quality education...but who doesn't? Has there ever been a candidate that ran on dirty drinking water and crumbling schools?

All I'm saying is she's so freaking worried about the negative impact this casino could have on her district...what has she done to improve it? Has she ever authored something that led to $10M being pumped into any school or even saved $100 for the city or NPS's? I don't do FB or twitter but I can see the sheep that follow her and praise her for her placebic tweets and retweets.  So, maybe someone here can enlighten me on her accomplishments.

I was more partial to the 3rd or 4th plan...I think the one they're recommending is kinda mundane, but we'll see. Hopefully it allows ORF to become a small hub (think Allegiant or Frontier), and maybe add more of a food court.

Yep, I figured they would go with No.1, it looks to be the cheapest option. Number 3 would have been really cool but would have been a huge project. I do think they should incorporate the curbside canopy from No.4 into the chosen design. Would eliminate the wind sprints during drop off/pick-ups in the rain.

  6. After watching the flyover I can't help but feel like this development could be so much more. Adding residential and more commercial would have made it more of vibrant destination....because clearly we have to drive to it. It looks like a glorified larger than normal brewery, I mean holy outdoor seating batman. Add a parking structure with residential. Incorporate old reclaimed railroad tracks throughout that embedded in the concrete pathways. Add some cool features like old train cars and cabooses for dining areas. Or have revolving food vendors set up shop inside of the old cabooses. Instead of having just a platform as a stage build it out of the side of an old railcar. You get the point, spare me the over abundance of out door seating to "chill" while sipping an IPA, wearing skinny jeans, dress shoes and Patagonia sweater. Some outdoor seating is needed but come on, it's "The Railyard"...it should be a little gritty and a little grimy looking. It should have an actual working fresh seafood market. It should have old railroad signs, flashing red crossing arms. Just more industrial and true to the "Railyard" theme is all I'm saying.

I'm not upset at the project because it will be way better than what's already there. All I'm saying is with Norfolk's heavy rail history it could and should be so much more.

  7. Who is this "Commercial Casino"? I haven't seen ANYTHING that states that multiple casino's were interested in the land if it was approved. That land has sat vacant for many years with very little to show for it. Also Andria is worried about crime around NSU? She should take a ride over there...it's not a utopia that she's painting us right now. What has she and her cohorts done to curb the violent crime and poverty that exists in and around NSU and Chesterfield Heights...just curious. Let's make believe the big bad casino will makes things terrible in that area...it already is. I say vote...if it passes move forward. If the state approves casinos then let the commercial casinos jump on the wagon and build one of their own. Pretty sure if the tribe came to 757Angels for capital her post would read a little different...just sayin.

Man, as much as I want to see MacArthur redeveloped, I'd love to see a 600,000 sq ft Sentara office tower! :shok: I really hope Sentara decides to build new downtown.

That would be in the neighborhood of 30-45 floors depending on the footprint. That would be a beautiful thing in DT Norfolk.

  9. "What will be missing is any kind of residential component. The city has pushed for mixed-use developments in an effort to encourage walkable communities, but Meredith said it didn’t make sense here. The project is, however, designed to be fully walkable once visitors have parked."

I would love to see "The Railyard Station" part of the light rail expansion on the way to ODU and NOB.

A guy can dream can't he?

I am really surprised that the Rudee Loop never became a massive all inclusive resort hotel. With that much available land, it seems like a prime spot for something like that.

I could easily see that urbanlife…very good idea. I'm not so sure the city ever tried to market it like that.
