  1. I believe when it opened (or designed that way) it was the first airport in the US to use these jetways exclusively. It is a beautiful airport, it was hard fought locally (Planning started in the early 2000's) Small airport, but the old building was painfully inefficient. Starting from scratch just made the most sense.
  2. My hometown of Wichita, KS recently built a new airport and used these glass wall jetways. They are very nice and it is nice to get rid of that whole dark dingy basement hallway feeling you get in most jetways. They actually stay pretty cool too. Kansas is a place where the sun beats down on them and the winter can hit single digits. I don't know if they climate control them somehow, but it was probably 90+ with the sun and no clouds last time I was home and they were not uncomfortable at all. Warmer, but not stuffy.
  3. Walked out onto my patio after the storm tonight to catch a rainbow over uptown.
  4. You make it sound like a Contractor is absolutely nothing like an Employee. This isn't a discussion about the legal definition of the relationship, it is a conversation about what is right. Your example is misleading, it is all about scale. It's more like the City of Charlotte contracting for tree trimming, and that contractor drops limbs on different houses weekly. The contractor will likely make it whole and repair damage but citizens would have a right to hold the city accountable if they just wash their hand of it and say "Not our responsibility?" Is the city responsible from a legal point of view? No, but if they continue to use a contractor that is clearly bad at their job, the city should make a change. Hence the difference between responsibility and accountability. All the legal definitions aside, Google is the face of all this, the average citizen would blame all this on Google. That is not a good look, and bad for their brand and business, the whole Google Fiber rollout here has a very negative PR look right now. Google should do something to fix that.
  5. Not even my post, but, well... Given those two words have different meanings... No different than a Boss - Employer relationship. Google hired the contractors, they should do their due diligence. Things do happen, and bad contractors are hired, but Google needs to take the stand on some of these bad contractors. If they make mistakes, make sure they don't keep making them. If they keep making them, let them go. Google should have some oversight on the process.
  6. I just moved to Charlotte from the KC area. The streetcar there was extremely well planned out, and benefited from really building the whole thing all at once. The "loop" really hits all the big spots downtown, and is really actually convenient from a transportation point of view, and not just novelty. The free for use thing Is really the way I think a streetcar loop like that has to work. The streetcar here feels like much more of a "line" at full buildout for actually commuting rather than the KC streetcar being a "loop" that works much better for downtown circulation.
  7. Long time lurker, but I recently decided to post. I just moved to Charlotte from the Kansas City area, and have been amazed with how patchy the bicycle infrastructure is. It seems like Charlotte is trying, but they don't have the money/will/support to make it something special. I agree with taking the lane though, I often would stay off to the right back in Kansas and drivers would either move to the other lane to pass, or pass at a pretty safe distance. Here, I have almost been clipped multiple times, while simultaneously being flipped off or honked at. The other day on Morehead a guy was within feet of my bike behind me laying on the horn, despite having a clear lane to pass. I have gone to using sidewalks or just driving in some instances because of this. I really want to bike, and living in South End I see many, many people biking and using the B-Cycle every day, but they almost always are using the rail trail, or sidewalks. I shouldn't have to scream at drivers that I have a right to be on the road. As a side to the recent posts, my apartment complex offers free bike rentals for tenants, as well as many of the other places I looked at before moving.
