This makes me sad, I lived in Moore Hall my freshman year (2013) and South Village has changed so much since then, Hunt Hall was the only new dorm open at the time and SOVI was still under construction (the exposed metal on the roof reflected into my room, making it quite nice and warm in the winter, not so enjoyable come spring) RDH was still open serving food on their multicolored plates, Levine Hall was a parking lot, Laurel was not even on anyone's mind and the renovations of Holshouser and Scott had yet to begin. Just a sign of the rapid change at UNCC in just a few short years.

My family is not poor by any means, but my parents insisted I gain some real "college experience" and living in Moore was the absolute bare bones of college dorm life. Two students to a room, and a communal bathroom shared by 12 students on one hallway, four hallways per floor, laundry in the basement. To me this was a taste of how good I had it with my parents, but to some students this cheap housing option was essential to their success and ability to afford living on/near campus. The next year my family could afford to put me up with something nicer across campus, but to some students, these high rises symbolized opportunity to partake in academic success. Between Moore and Sanford are the absolute cheapest housing options, and when they're gone I find it hard to believe they'll be replaced with anything as affordable, hmm, sounds like a theme here in Charlotte.

Shoot, what floor were you on? I lived in Moore that year as well facing the metal rattle trap that is now SOVI. People used to throw oranges from RDH onto the metalwork to make a crazy sounding banging noise. Crazy that two different dorms I lived in are both being demolished right after I finished my college career!

Why can’t CATS have their crap together enough to show countdown timers on the existing LED boards at every station?

The audio announcements are awfully vague when you have trains coming from both directions.

I've wandered this for a while??  That's a common thing in most cities and we can't seem to figure out how to make it happen..

I get why they are doing it but it seems to penalize the residents and taxpayers of the University area with a parking charge that NO other lot or garage has along the route.  What is to stop the students from parking and filling up the Sugar Creek garage or even further every  parking spot in the Scaleybark station?  I can assure you most days it will be cheaper for me to drive to uptown for my occasional meetings than using the the LYNX and that is a shame.    and why have the parking rates not been announced it is opening this Friday for crying out loud?

I've heard parking will be free for anyone buying more than a one way ticket.

The bigger question to me is I wonder how legacy union will affect the stadium’s long term viability. I am hoping the location of the stadium next to brand new development will prevent a new owner from pushing for a new stadium in 10 years. We don’t need to spend $1B+ of tax payer money on a new stadium. Maybe this will make it more viable/attractive to just upgrade the current stadium in the future.

Couldn't agree more. We don't need a taxpayer funded Jerry dome or dirty birds nest when we have a great team owned stadium that has nothing wrong with it whatsoever.

    That's hilarious.

I don't play, but I walk the course at Reedy Creek. Great scenery and it looked sufficiently challenging, in my opinion.

Reedy Creek is great and is one of the oldest courses in the area! Charlotte is one of the disc golf capitals of America with the amount of quality courses we possess!

Pic of the airport control tower construction from yesterday. It seems they have slowed some since getting to what looks like the flight deck levels. It's been this way for a few weeks now.

This is going to make the airport look much more big time compared to the control tower on site now. Definitely excited for the option of a hotel on the site of the current tower as well!

I read that the attendance for the Rice game was underwhelming.  Was that the case?  or just poor reporting?  If so, what do you think is driving the attendance issue?  That was arguably the biggest game in Charlotte's history.

Attendance wasn't awful, but was not impressive. I would say the problem is that no one other than die hard fans knew it was a big game. The average football fan probably thinks we're still terrible because all they've seen are our bad home losses.

Clearly Charlotte has no home field advantage. We can't seem to buy a home win even against an inferior opponent. I have no idea how to explain that one.

  7. Sadly we blew another home game this week verses Rice. A bowl isn't off the table but is much harder to attain at this point. Charlotte's football team is on the rise but blowing games against inferior opponents at home certainly doesn't make people want to come back. Some coaching changes are probably needed in order for the program to reach the next level.

  8. Density is is the best thing that could possibly happen in UCity right now. In the next 10 year UNCC will reach 35k students. Density close to campus means less cars and more walking. These types of project also build a more urban feel which is dearly needed in the areas surrounding campus.

  9. The old miner has been moved from the front of campus to the new quad in front of Union. I personally think this was a good move because he's now more in the public eye and it's about the only thing that screams "Go Niners!" anywhere on campus these days.

Well I am back on campus, which means the only current UNCC student on urban planet is back to taking pictures.

Calm down hotshot, there are others we just might not post that often. Nice pictures by the way! I'm still not buying that students will be in Levine this semester. There are huge portions of walls that are unfinished and construction projects are notorious for not getting finished on  time at UNCC.

  11. The stadium is in good shape in a great location with a fairly modern feel. We've continually sold it out even when we weren't good. Outside of more renovations there is no reason the city should be forking out cash for the panthers within the next 20 years. They have a great stadium and building a brand new dome just for a super bowl would never be worth it.

If they use them for (after) Panther games, it will be pretty funny if they have giant hand-written banners (or something) on the third car to indicate that if you get in that one, you can only get out at Woodlawn or 485.  I'm actually interested to see if they do that, or if they would let out 2 cars, then pull forward a little, then let out the 3rd car.

Is it possible that they would be able to bring the front car past the platform halfway and the back car halfway as well and only open half the doors on the shorter platforms? I've seen this done on the New York subway system when the platforms weren't long enough for the train.

  13. For what it's worth this complex isn't too bad looking for UC. If we continue to see this kind of development an urban core could begin to form on 49. The school would do well to develop the corner of John Kirk and 49 but that doesn't seem to be one of their priorities right now.

Campus has a new highest-point landmark! A new cell phone tower was being erected near the Cone Center today. My view from Phillips road made it look significantly taller than the library. It also looked eerily like a thinner Belk Tower.

    Ugh.

I heard it was a TV broadcast antenna for athletics. Could be wrong but that was the rumor on campus this past year.

CATS did dredge at the end of the line past the station and create an embankment similar to the one leading into the tunnel on North Tryon. If you zoom into the picture you can see the downward slope of the track bed following the station.

They did make a cutout past the station, My guess would be that it is either for track switching or for a future extension of the line.

The State of NC has released the first $200 million of the recently based bond referendum. It looks that UNCC will be receiving money for a new science building.

This building is going to end up being constructed where parking, receiving and stores, and the old steam plant are currently located. It will really clean up a trashy part of campus and connect the student health center to the rest of everything.
