  1. There are a ton of manufacturers out there for LRT/Streetcars:

    Siemens (Germany)

    Alstom (France)

    AnsaldoBreda (Italy)

    CAF (Spain)

    Stadler (Swiss)

    Skoda (Czech)

    Nippon Sharyo (Japan)

    Kinki Sharyo (Japan)

    Kawasaki (Japan)

    Hyundai Rotem (Korea)

    Bombardier (Canada)

    United Streetcar (USA)

    Brookville (USA)

Not included are East European, Russian or Chinese manufacturers who want in on the US market too. Brazil and India have their own startups too.  Imagine all the boondoggles Charlotte politicians will get over the next few years.  The opportunities for corruption are endless!

There may be a lot of manufacturers/companies that make them, but due to the way this line has been funded, via federal grants in part, the city must use trans/cars that were built here. This poses a problem as there are better foreign models already in existence but we cannot use them.

  2. In the next few years:

    • Finish the Remote Decks
    • New Runway
    • Renovate the Terminal, (hopefully in the style of the east and west expansions.) so it wont look like a god forsaken truck stop when you pull up.....
    • Expand the width of the arrival and departure lanes in front of the terminal
    • Connect the terminal to the new hourly decks via skybridges (similar to how it was on the old decks)
    • Build a new domestic terminal that will extend perpendicular from Terminal A (essentially mirroring the international terminal)

    Did I miss anything.....?

  3. I took this one about a month ago. Its of the rear side near the tower obviously. I was there last weekend and the progress on the terminal side is promising. Will be great once they do the terminal and widen the arrival and departure lanes and re-establish the walkways over to the new deck.

  4. PJ Hairston, what....are...you...doing?

He is doing exactly what he does..... He has a record of stupid and reckless behavior off the court and despite his talent on the court that does not look likely to change. I, and others, were concerned about this the moment we traded for him. He can really help us in areas we are lacking on the court but this nonsense is not what we need....

  5. http://www.citylab.com/commute/2014/06/how-parking-lots-became-the-scourge-of-american-downtowns/372207/

great little video about parking craters and their detriment to American downtowns. Not too long ago most of third ward would have very easily been our obvious Charlotte Parking Crater. Now with Romare Bearden, BB&T Ballpark, and the subsequent housing that is blossoming there, I believe Levineburg is our official parking crater, although the few blocks around the transit center and Skye certainly make a good case....

  6. I actually like the way Silos turned out.  Colonial, on the other hand, is an abomination.  It's almost unintentionally brutalist, because it's so terrible.  The top (non bricked) portion of the building literally appears to just be exposed concrete.

completely agree.... I drove southbound on South Blvd for the first time in a while, and the top of it looks absolutely terrible from quite a distant away. It looks as if there is an entire floor of the parking deck is sticking out above the top of the building

  7. One thing I noticed at the Pops concert: people definitely brought bottles of wine to drink. Anybody know if the city made a special allowance for it like they do for South Park or if the police just didn't care? It was nice to see people able to enjoy wine in the park.

Meck County Park & Rec. was simply looking the other way on that one. They were only going to step in if a problem presented itself...

Lets be honest, its not the symphony going crowd that you typically have to worry about.

  8. the work at the Corporate center was to work on some utilities and mechanical systems for the building that are located underneath the plaza. So really all that happened on the surface was new pavers/design on the ground plane and the triangle which is a large vent to the utilities below

  9. Last Saturday, I got in from an overnight flight from Portland, OR in the morning, so I basically was groggy the whole day and didn't feel like cooking that night and decided to grab a takeout pizza from Mellow Mushroom. WOW, was I surprised at the activity in the park while the game was going on. It was PACKED, and the jumbotron was broadcasting the game (at least I think it was a live broadcast...I just drove by it). It was so great to see this space completely packed.

I know that there is nowhere near the space as in the SouthPark Charlotte Symphony summer Pops series (whatever that venue is officially called), but I wonder if this park could support a weekly summer concert series. Seeing all the folks out there on blankets just hanging out watching the game reminded me of the Charlotte Symphony Pops series at SouthPark.

  10. As the empty lots around Bearden continue to be developed, is anyone at the city thinking/concerned about making sure these new buildings don't create too much shade in the park?

I was thinking the same thing a few months back. Our office looks directly out over the park and i have noticed that the sun path during the spring/summer months is high enough in the sky so that it ins't a huge issue, but during fall/winter months the sun path is mostly covered by Catalyst and now Childress Klein as well

  11. Just wondering, but does anyone else but me think the Hornets should retire some jerseys this coming season? Yes I know we have never had a true SUPERSTAR player but we had some real talent back in the day and now that we have the name, and thankfully the history/stats back, should we raise some jerseys to the rafters?

#13 (Bobby Phills) is the only jersey up there, but I cant help but feel like it would be an appropriate nod to the past team to put someone like Muggsey (#1).

    Thoughts....?

  12. Was out at CLT on Sunday and used the newly aligned entrance road off of the parkway and i can say it threw me for a bit, but the new "main entrance" off of HWY 74 and the alignment with the terminal will be a great thing for navigating. I'll still always use Morris Field - BG - Parkway - side entrance but it will give CLT a little more prominence? Not sure if thats the correct word....

The West terminal expansion is progressing very quickly as is the new super-deck. Once its finished and they widen the pick-up drop-off lanes in front of the terminal and reconecct to the deck via new bridges, i have to hope that there will be some sort of accompanying facelift to the existing termianal between the east and west expansions to match their new vernacular/aesthetic. While its nothing phenominal, the east wing looks light years better than the glorified truck stop that is the existing terminal drop off...
