  1. The key here in all of these "successful" examples is that there are actually a critical mass of things to do, places to shop, restaurants with significant street presence/seating. We have and are making progress, but there is not nearly enough there there to sustain a pedestrian mall IMO.

"I noticed a Luna's Living Kitchen sign at the renovated warehouse project on Winnifred, on the space nearest Summit. It doesn't look like much else has been done yet though, doesn't really look like an actual restaurant location (though it could be a great one with that space if enough creative work was put into it). "

This space you are referring to is a prep/production kitchen and storage space.

  3. Interesting open letter from the owner of Unknown on their 1st anniversary: http://www.charlottebeer.com/2015/02/04/a-letter-from-brad-shell-founder-of-the-unknown-brewing-co/

In short: I'm a big loud guy, our beers weren't very good, our tap room wasn't very good.  I wish I'd been more humble, we've got our beer where it needs to be, we've changed our tap room.  If your first experience wasn't world class, give us another shot.

I am very happy to see this acknowledgement form their team. I went to Unknown a few weekends ago for the first time in a looooooong time and it was truly a different/better experience. The beer has improved greatly as has their taproom and staff. I hope that some more critical mass will arise around them in the next year or so to better connect them to the South End neighborhood, but having Craft right behind them certainly helps in my opinion as they are no longer an island. Some friends and I went out specifically to go to Craft that night, but ended up at Unknown til it closed at 10 because there was no room to breathe inside Craft and it was to cold to comfortably enjoy their patio. After Unknown closed we walked back through the alley to Craft, which had only slightly calmed down, and enjoyed the rest of the evening. It was a great night.
