I think it was premature for the mayor to include it in the SOTC. I’m all for transparency but it gave the impression to most that this was happening. Until there’s a name and money behind it, the proposal is no more likely than the conceptual renderings in the comprehensive plan.

I kind of agree with this. Look at how many things have been announced at the SOTC with no firm developer behind it and then never happened. Continuing to do so will basically put the SOTC on par with a wish list for the city, would it not?

  2. From r/norfolk, if Chik-fil-a connected all of their locations in HR with a metro. Honestly though, not a terrible regional rail system lol.

I had the guy at HRT telling me each LRT stop had transit oriented development around it and I'm like...

You don't think that the Newtowne stop has TOD around? Come on those single family houses, parking lot, and the 7/11(if it's still there) don't give off the essence of TOD to you?

    Why are the numbers up?

    More people took flights 😇

But seriously, there's more destinations available compared to the same period last year, as well as some increases in frequency and just higher load factors.

The Half Moon Terminal will only be available for overflow cruises from Baltimore until May. After that it will be undergoing expansion to prepare for year round operations which begin in 2025.

I wouldn't be too stuck on the May date cutting off Carnival from using Norfolk. As Carnival has stated that Norfolk has allowed them to temporarily homeport the Legend here for as long as is necessary. Yes, May is when the Half Moon is scheduled to shut but I'm sure, given the circumstances, the city is either looking at ways to work around it when the ship docks or delaying the work.  Honestly, I'm not sure why they didn't plan to either work around the ships or temporarily have them render passengers in from the beginning.

Speaking of the work being done, did y'all know that included in it is adding a second dock for ships? I just found this out yesterday from my friend who works in planning. Maybe I saw it and it just didn't compute but that's definitely going to help in getting another ship to homeport in Norfolk.

Welp... not exactly. (Yes, I know, it's early, but...)

RIC outpaced ORF by (roughly) 20K passengers in January, and by 29K in February - so in the two slowest months of the year, we're ahead by 49K passengers. Not a huge margin, admittedly, and ORF's new routes starting up later this year will boost their numbers, particularly during the summer travel season, when ORF usually outpaces RIC.

One thing to consider, @eandslee - of the new routes flying out of ORF, I believe at least two of them are re-establishing previously existing route. ORF-SAN and ORF-SJU. Undoubtedly, it will bump up their numbers, but these routes were already established as destinations out of ORF.

ORF has never had a SJU route at least not within the last 20 years. Also yes RIC is up by 49k passengers right now. However, if ORF stays on it's 12% growth rate, they're also looking at 5.1M passengers this year. Given the amount of additional destinations coming, I see no reason why a 12% growth rate can't be sustained and surpassed.

By chance, does anyone know what ORF did in January and February? I'd like to see how we're stacking up relative to one another.

As touched on above ORF is currently sitting at ~602k passengers YTD but grew 12% over the same period last year. There has also been, I believe, 8 new routes announced starting this year.

  8. I currently live just a 10min drive from the Key Bridge and it's a frightening scene. However, hopefully the cruises stopping temporarily in Norfolk will show that we can handle more and lead to a further expansion of cruises permanently stopping there.

  9. If ORF can(and I am hoping it will do even better) keep a 12% increase in passengers for the year it will put them at about 5.1M. With the additional service that's been announced thus far, I think we should surpass that.
