  1. What is the deal with the new farecards...?
  2. Interesting... I had no idea But the unique marketing strategy could be indicative of the types of urban dweller that this place sees living in Uptown (large disposable income, young, well-connected, etc.). Other establishments' lack of visibility and more conventional atmosphere suggest a sort of utilitarian purpose: that of serving the commuting professional who doesn't want to have to venture far from the office to have dental work done. TLDR; Pearl is steeped in pretension, yes, but it underscores the growing Yuccie population in Center City.
  3. Kind of an excessively bourgeois establishment, but it's good to see that more key amenities are coming to downtown for residents who don't want to have to drive out to the suburbs for quality dental care. http://www.charlottefive.com/this-dentist-office-feels-different/
  4. Old flyover video, so I'm not sure if it had been posted here before... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-OKD3fLA0A
  5. Super off topic, but I've been wondering for a while why there aren't any "geofilters" on Snapchat for Charlotte (other than the one at the airport). I know most city-specific filters are created by the community, but it's been weird that a city this size hasn't had a single artistically-inclined resident put something together... I mean, New York has about 50 of them, but couldn't we at least have 1? If any of you are feeling particularly creative anytime soon, here is more info on how to submit something: https://support.snapchat.com/a/user-submitted-geofilters
  6. Actually just got back from CLE. So many great old retail districts to walk around (Coventry, Little Italy, etc.). I definitely don't think "Mistake by the Lake" is accurate anymore...
  7. #45 makes me cringe . No one in the 21st century should be celebrating Overstreet Mall's existence.
  8. There's some interesting information in here about the viability of Charlotte's park-and-ride LYNX stations. http://www.citylab.com/cityfixer/2014/06/the-case-for-tearing-down-park-and-ride-lots/372558/
  9. I realize that, I'm just saying that the previously dominant ideal of the suburban office park has contributed to the hesitancy of developers to build office towers without tenants lined up - thus creating this lack of speculative Class A office space downtown. I had more in the article originally about the rebirth of downtown, but my editor made me cut it
  10. Gave a small shout-out to Charlotte in this urban politics piece on car dependency. Enjoy! http://www.brownpoliticalreview.org/2014/03/the-urban-noose/
  11. Ah, thank you! Any idea when they plan on releasing that data?
  12. It appears that the Charlotte Chamber has finally released their population estimates for 2013. According to them, Charlotte stands at 796,921 people. So close to the 800,000 mark! Source: http://charlottechamber.com/clientuploads/Economic_pdfs/PopulationEstimates.pdf
  13. Good thing I saved a copy on my hard drive... https://www.dropbox.com/s/b1pksisdg6c412e/Yadkin%20River%20Bridge%20Replacement.mp4
  14. Decided to write a little Buzzfeed article about it. Unfortunately the video is having trouble showing up on the page, but I'm sure you've all seen it by now. http://www.buzzfeed.com/eddiemansius/so-apparently-north-carolina-gets-trippy-hnjv
  15. Taking the train out of Boston's South Station this morning really made this news even more difficult to swallow
  16. Somehow I've never seen these renderings and this video before, but it would be a shame if all this gets shut down... http://charlotteeqv.com/images.html
  17. Loved the bit about Charlotte being a "Podunk town"
  18. I'm by no means an expert, nor do I have any engineering background, but hypothetically, how practical would it be to burrow under ADM and leave the portion of the track they rely on intact? I realize this would be very expensive, but would it be more expensive than what they're already demanding from the state? It would kind of be like the Big Dig project in Boston, where they didn't want to shut down all of I-93 for years while they built a new highway, so they left it open while tunneling underneath it.
  19. Looks like the Phillips family is starting to cash in on their land on Sharon View (behind Phillips Place). Seems to be more townhomes/detached units from Weekley Homes... Petition, tentative plans, and Weekley's website are below: http://ww.charmeck.org/planning/Rezoning/2013/063-077/2013-066%20application.pdf http://ww.charmeck.org/planning/Rezoning/2013/063-077/2013-066%20site%20plan.pdf http://www.davidweekleyhomes.com/
