Here’s the thing: we always bemoan either the sameness of what gets done downtown or that, relative to  other fast growing cities we seem to not progress as quickly or whatever.

Some of it I know is because of the decentralized nature of our infrastructure. A lot of those decisions were made half a century ago or even longer and too much has been invested to change them.

But it also seems (and, I could be in error here, but I think I’m right) that as the city has grown and one would expect a lot more players to become involved, this administration keeps going back to the same few players: Lincoln, the DeVoses, Baker-Barrios come immediately to mind.

It seems anyone else that comes in, if they even get through one project, they don’t repeat. Is that normal as a city grows there become fewer and fewer players?

I think of Ron Pizzuti who had his finger in several projects, most notably for our tall fans the tower that would have the huge cube on top and later The Sevens.

I know he’s something of a big deal in Columbus and finally abandoned Orlando saying there were more opportunities in Ohio (a scary thought).

There have been a variety of others, apart from the scammers and wannabes, who just never found a foothold.

Is it because our power structure has become too incestuous? It used to be that Orlando’s big selling feature as a brand new city was how open it was compared to older cities like New Orleans or Charleston or many of the larger Midwestern cities.

We do seem to be “stuck” in that regard. Maybe I’m misreading it but it does seem worth review.

For the same reason, i was talking to my friends that it is time to get a new mayor not name Buddy.  They all think i am crazy.  Hence, downtown Orlando will only be playing catch up and not a leader.

not really...NYC, Chicago, Atlanta, Boston, DC, SF, Austin, LA, and on and on... they all have high rents and thousands of people live there. Why, because people are willing to pay it. They can because of corporate presence. Higher education, higher paying jobs = people can afford more.  When Orlando learns to invest in education and diversifies its economy instead of continuing the endless rut of service industry minimum wage jobs...then this city will prosper and so will its urban areas.

Agreed. Also, downtown Orlando also need to upgrade itself to make it attractive.

That's a fairly tone-deaf reply to this.  People want to live in the city center for reasonable rents.  That varies from person to person, but there is a reason large numbers of people don't live in downtown Orlando.  The rent is too high.

No, people want to live in downtown paying suburban rent.  The cost of maintenance for a sprawling apartment complex is vastly different from a shiny high rise. That is like me wanting to find a house in 32789 for 350k or wanting a restoration hardware furniture at Ikea price. It is supply and demand, if people want to live there, they have to pay the price..

The "fins" certainly provided a nice detail. The glass side has never been my problem with this building. The piano key side still doesn't look good to me.

Funny, the "piano key side"  is the side that I like and would love to see the entire building of it and remove the glass side. It is very mid century feel and impactful. But the bigger issue of this building is the combination of both and the disproportion of the entire building. It would definitly help if the narrow part is 10 stories taller. If the building does not have the "piano key side" and replaced with glass, it will look even more weired

  5. CV started out by selling us the idea of it would be Portland Heritage Square, Boston Faneiul Hall....an area with high regard in archictecture design , creative and inspiring. It was mentioned that they have special design guideline and all other grand rendering design.  But in reality, there are no dedicated bike lane, entire development still extremely car centric, lousy architecture asthetic and the entire thing look like it can be anywhere close to UCF east campus/ Lake Mary office park.  Orlando deserves something better. At some point, we were mentioned in the same sentence as Austin during the early 2000s, they have totally left us in the dust.
