Anyone going address the "damage" bill handed to Memphis in May l, particularly to the BBQ fest?

They seem to be trying to kill off Memphis in May at Tom Lee. Why would any other festival want to come if they are going to get a bill like that.

Memphis should talking about adding a second weekend to the music fest and a land bridge  from the Landing to Mud Island to expand the BBQ Competition but not Memphis.......?

Absolutely agree! The land bridge is the key and moving The BBQ contest and a small lineup of concerts to a renovated and updated amphitheater is the way to go. There is more land mass on the southern tip of the island than most people realize the BBQ contest could certainly be held there

  2. With the recent news of MLB relocation & expansion possibilities Milwaukee & Tampa Bay . Should our city leaders put Memphis name in the hat for a franchise?? We have a stadium that could be used as a home temporarily or permanently depending on how much is spent to expand it. Here’s some info. Let’s get some input negative or positive on where Memphis would stand.

The CA site is prime land for entertainment. Sundance Film festival has used Crosstown theater in past. I would love to see Sundance festival move the HQ here and CA building could house them.

This is also a great concept. The armory in St. Louis could be a blueprint for CA warehouse.

From what I seen, the Fairgrounds development is already getting something like that, it'll be nice for the Tiger games and other sports. It's called High5. It's like Main Event. It has bowling, pool, games, laser Tag, etc. So they are covered.

Even though FedEx forum is on Beale St. people can have fun. We just need that kind of entertainment downtown that Jillians use to bring. The commercial appeal building or land (if torn down) could bring something mixed-use with that option. I wouldn't be shocked if The Walk may have contingent contracts for something like that in their developments, its a opportunity that im shocked haven't been done yet. If we had the space TopGolf would have been downtown instead.

I think it was probably both from Beale St Music Festival and BBQ fest.  I doubt there was much (if any) intentional damage, but when that many people/that much equipment is being fit into a more confined space with increased infrastructure, there will be damage.  Most of it is probably trampled plants/grass, rutting up of the ground from trailers and stages.

They really need to build that Land bridge to connect to mud Island. Retro fit Mud Island to be the home of BSMF. Knock down a couple of buildings that are not being used to open up space and parking and use the open grass southern  end as well as a renovated amphitheater to host the event that would solve the issue.

Maybe they could use sprayed on concreate over foam like is used for A/C condenser support.  If not that, maybe plastic or wood.

Of course it is none of my business, but I wonder if AXA gave a cash settlement to get out of the headache of holding onto the Sterick Building?  This, the tax credits and multiple investors could fund the rehab.  Also, Crosstown Concourse appeared to get down quickly after the pieces came together.

It’s my hope that Sterick will come online by last quarter 2026. My understanding is the new owners are working feverishly right now for a 2026 opening. We will see several recent proposals have been delayed based on rising cost of materials, inflating bank bonds and loans etc. Good thing is those historic tax credits are there and DMC has several financial incentives the building qualifies for. Fingers Crossed on this one to open 2026

Memphis would be an ideal spot for a Hard Rock Hotel, although I wonder how much they are focusing on hotel projects that wouldn't have an added casino.  Still irks me that casino gambling hasn't been legalized in Tennessee.  The state is losing so much potential revenue to neighboring states it's crazy.  But I suppose that's another issue altogether.

One more random tangent... it still blows my mind that they haven't put a House of Blues in the friggin' HOME OF THE BLUES.   But I digress.

The former site of plush club would make a great site for hard rock hotel

Light rail transit will probably never come to fruition to any significance (connections between downtown, Liberty Park, UofM campus, airport). But there may be another (cheaper) option. Many US cities are discussing utilizing gondolas for transit.

The only existing public gondolas in the US are in Portland and NYC (connection Manhattan to Roosevelt island). Both are around 1km in length. Disney World has around 3 miles of gondola lines connecting Hollywood Studios, Epcot, and numerous hotels. I’ve ridden them many times, and they are pleasant to ride.

Bolivia & Colombia are two countries that have made good use of gondolas for public transit. Capacity isn’t as high as subways, but I think they would be more than enough for demand in Memphis. Could this be a realistic option for Memphis?

Interesting read. This may be a option.

I don't know what they were thinking, because this is shameful. So much has gone to the landfills in the name of progress and they left downtown with a glut of parking lots and open space. Thank goodness level heads intervened. This is why saving the Coliseum is important, because of its potential and usefulness. They can build the soccer stadium in another area of downtown and create another entertainment district around it.

I have some in-laws that are Orpheum season ticket holders and they would love to see another professional theater open downtown, because they feel Memphis is missing out on other good shows.

Things are moving in the right direction with MSC. Ken May is very active behind the scenes right now and has met with live Nation about booking concerts. Hopefully by the end of this year we will have more concrete information and details about renovation. Let’s just see how this plays out. As far as 901fc there are plenty of other options that would be options.  Here’s a look @ crump and main property approx. 15 acres ready for development. Owner by Frank Smith ( Wiseacre) who has stated he would love to negotiate with 901 fc about the land.

Hopefully when the docks are expanded and we see more cruises we’ll have more hotel rooms. I guess it’s a wait and see approach (and being cautious) unfortunately.

That’s a good thought. The dock expansion plus additional foot traffic from more cruisers should expand the hotel demand.

As far as the MLGW site, this land could be sold to private entities for development.  It is in a prime area with high property values.  The city would get a nice check for selling the land, then would also get yearly property tax payments.  If an aquarium goes there, they will get neither.

The empty lot next to the welcome center is now considered a "green space."  It's completely barren, and there's no escaping the sun during a hot day, and I have no idea if anyone uses it at all.  It should be named AC's Park.  They could have spent less money by not cutting down any of the trees along the lagoon or the Lone Star site, and kept the concrete towers with the Memphis sign, and it would have looked nicer.  Anyways, this site will probably never go back into private hands, as that would not adhere to the city's use plan.  Also, I don't know if any of the property falls within the city's founders original public promenade.  An aquarium could go there.

An aquarium could also go on Mud Island.  Whether it be on the Southern point, where the current Mud Island Museum is, or where the Memphis Belle was displayed.  If it was on the Southern point, I think there would have to be a pedestrian bridge from Cobblestone or Beale Street landing to make it more accessible.

A land bridge was proposed in the original design.

It's beautiful. The riverfront is beginning to come into its form. I know the mayor want to install a Ferris Wheel over by the welcome center, but I think that area would be better served for the aquarium they proposed.  I think incorporating the Freshwater Institute in with an aquarium that's under the management of the Zoo  would be fitting. It would definitely create foot traffic.

All for the Aqaurium and fresh water institute however it should be @ Mud Island.

As described to me, this past weekend, from someone that works in city planning, scrap the soccer fields, and have retail in both locations, because Liberty Park should be one of the densest areas in the city and the taxes collected should reflect it. Yes, there’s an area beside the Kroc Center where they play soccer which makes no sense to me to build soccer fields where potential tax producing amenities could go.

The only open space in Liberty Park should be parking and that should be cut down by adding a couple of parking garages with rooftop bars.

Think about it, if they proceed with razing the Coliseum, there will another tax-exempt structure that will go months without producing any form of revenue.

I changed my view on the Coliseum, because I once thought it had outlived its usefulness, but now I see it as something that could produce tax revenue 365 days a year. I have always believed the vision for the fairgrounds should be about more than sports, but more of a destination for Memphians and the families and visitors that travel to Memphis. The amenities are what will make LP more attractive for hosting events.

I was thinking an entrance off Southern could feed that area and I don’t think there will any trouble with attraction patrons.

Glad u changed direction on MSC. With the recent news Of Ken May former Top Golf ceo and FedEx office ceo,  along with Corey Strong( Attorney ) forming a conservancy to have a mix of commercial uses, sports events and concerts, this is the best opportunity for MSC to be reopened and reimagined. The city continues to push for possibly hosting an NBA all star weekend well a secondary venue will be needed for that to become a reality. MSC is that secondary venue. Let’s see if Ken’s resume and expertise will be the difference maker

Glad to see this moving forward. It has been a long time coming. This project will do wonders for that area of Main st. Now let’s get the Lowes Hotel back on the drawing board.

I think the renovation plans to become ADA compliant would put fixed seating at MSC at 5,000.  Then you have the ability to have around 2,000 temporary seats around the court.  It would be perfect for an All-Star weekend for the Celebrity All-Star game and the HBCU games and any practices. Landers Center is an adequate facility, but it is far away (17 miles) with MSC only being 4.5 miles. Chicago used their WNBA arena downtown and 5 miles from the United Center, Cleveland used Cleveland St's arena and less than a mile from Rocket Mortgage arena, and Salt Lake used University of Utah's arena which is 4.5 miles away too.  Some cities that have held All-Star weekend in the past and didn't have a 2nd arena, used their convention center with temporary seating.

Really need those Hotel projects to come back too.  Loew's, Grand Hyatt, Sheraton expansion, The Clipper.  I've thought the 100 N Main could be all hotel.  When Townhouse planned for that, they had 500 hotel rooms planned.

Regarding the flights, there's only so much that can be done on Memphis' side.  Ultimately, its up to the carriers.

All excellent points. We will see very Soon what the future of MSC and the Hotels will be.  Dream Hotel supposedly breaking ground soon and Sheraton redo plus expansion as well as the proposed Hard Rock Hotel on or near Beale st. It’s going to be an interesting second half of the year.

This is why razing the coliseum is a bad idea, because having another enclosed arena nearby is important in hosting the NBA All Stars. I really would like to see the proposed soccer stadium built somewhere else , because it could be an anchor and catalyst for another entertainment/retail district. Having multiple options is just good for the city overall and we should want the NBA guest to have the best time. Hotels and air service will be most important and the downtown airport will be key for the private jets of the athletes, dignitaries, and stars. The next mayor and city council members need to be visionaries.

100 percent agree. MSC should be renovated and kept as the secondary arena. Our city leaders should step up on this issue. As far as Hotels, Air services. Our next mayor should make the proposed Lowes (civic Plaza) GrandHyatt one Beale a top priority to get built. Memphis international is currently undergoing major renovations including adding a second rental car location. Downtown airport I’m not familiar with but it’s good to know we have a private airport downtown

I was thinking more along the lines of Rock and Brews.

    https://www.rockandbrews.com/

I think the House of Blues would be a good fit for that location.

We are presently hosting the British Consul General, from Atlanta, and what better way to strengthen ties than to open a British restaurant on or near Beale St. I was in London last year and I ate at a restaurant that reminded me of Lafayette’s.  I wish I could remember the name.

    https://www.localmemphis.com/article/news/local/british-consul-general-visits-memphis-peabody-honorary-duckmaster/522-7e14dcdd-bdde-4db0-8f1e-b190a6da2495

Raglan Road is another restaurant that I believe would do well on Beale St.

I am honestly surprised that Ole Red hasn’t entered the Memphis market.

There's also going to be 11,000 sq feet of retail space in the mobility center to fill.  I think they should consider building out the North edge of Church Park with retail, because it would bring life to that area of Beale St.

I second the HOB it’s been long overdue should have been one on Beale
