  1. 501 Eastern Development getting Brownfield credits: http://www.mlive.com/business/west-michigan/index.ssf/2017/11/non-profit_housing_developer_g.html#incart_river_home Hope to begin construction in Spring 2018.
  2. Reminds me of when the union president pulled this stunt a couple years ago. It's like "We're mad as Hell and we're gonna find the most counterproductive ways to channel it."
  3. The author is local. Seriously!! Also, I'm pretty sure Sunday liquor laws are statewide. Has nothing to do with GR. EDIT: @iK1NkY is correct. The state changed the law in 2010, so businesses can apply for an extra permit to sell before noon. Local municipalities can still set their own restrictions. Grand Rapids is not one of them.
  4. Yeah, that's wrong. The article shouldn't have worded it that way. Realtor.com was ranking zip codes, not whole cities. Specifically 49506, which includes all of EGR, Eastown, part of East Hills, Ottawa Hills, and some other SE areas. 387K sounds right if you base it off that.
  5. I certainly don't want to see the state/city commit the insane amount of money & tax breaks that will be required to win this. That being said, I agree with previous posts on why putting in a good-faith effort to attract Amazon is still worth it, despite the impossible odds of actually getting them. Great columns, @localtalent and Ms. Richett. On another note, I've noticed in the past 24 hours MLive has run multiple articles about how the airport is growing. Does this have anything to do with Amazon...? http://www.mlive.com/news/grand-rapids/index.ssf/2017/10/why_one_west_michigan_airport.html http://www.mlive.com/news/grand-rapids/index.ssf/2017/10/popular_destinations_from_west.html http://www.mlive.com/news/grand-rapids/index.ssf/2017/10/the_billionaire_that_put_grand.html#incart_river_home
  6. Yes, it was Loeks' own expansion throughout the last decade that did it. By 2008 (technically before the recession) they had opened the Gaines Township location and bought the two mall Cinemarks. At that point, they no longer had any competition in all of southern metro GR. To keep Studio 28 open would be to cannibalize their own market. That being said, after the closure, the recession did make any reinvestment in that area impossible afterward. Maybe if 28 West really takes off they can lure in a different chain than Loeks. Not impossible, but a big "if."
  7. I agree but I think they're specifically targeting the eastern upscale suburbs (EGR/Forest Hills/etc.). A downtown Ada spot would be great.
  8. I like that too. How about Bezos shaking hands with Gerald Ford?
  9. We shall send Amazon an Artprize-Entry-Style 8-ft statue of Jeff Bezos made entirely of Kindles.
  10. Actually some posts have been pretty critical. Are we that desensitized to long diatribes from certain members about how terrible everything is? That may not have happened here (yet), but I wouldn't call that giving the building a "pass."
  11. Is a soccer stadium really the "worst kept secret" that started this whole discussion though? No one's actually confirmed that yet.
  12. Last we heard, it's in pieces, sitting in storage somewhere: http://www.mlive.com/artprize/index.ssf/2014/05/artprize_2010s_steampig_experiment_will_fly_again_in_locally_produced_film.html EDIT: Also, regarding the film, its Facebook Page says it will be showing at ArtPrize this year.
  13. I don't think that'll qualify for LIHTC but you might be able to capture some Brownfield credits, or else have your brother's backyard declared an NEZ. Did anyone say "Game-changer"? When will we see renderings?
  14. Amen. If buildings could speak...
  15. That, and some others that I found which match the same LLC naming convention as the Amplify GR properties:
  16. Madison / Cottage Grove area: Boston Square: I think I found the missing two: 1110 Evergreen and 226 Eugene. The LLCs listed as owners for these parcels are the same as the parcels they border. They are included in the map above.
  17. You're right! They'll be walking up and down Lyon. We gotta do something about that stone wall!
  18. Nice! I like it. Was wondering how far down the block this will go. I'm thinking this will fill the entire space between Logan and the alley across from Bemis? 501 and 505 are owned by "Restoration Row LLC." ICCF owns 511, 513, and 750 Logan. So correct me if I'm wrong, it looks like they'll be tearing down what's standing on 505 and 513 Eastern and building over all 5 parcels. As much as I like this development, I'm sorry to lose 513 Eastern - I wonder if it isn't worth saving?
  19. I don't understand why they wouldn't incorporate the Meijer name in at least some form. Will it appear anywhere on the building?
  20. And I bet you never once ate a piece of avocado toast that whole time.
  21. OMFG IT'S LIKE DETROIT ON THE WEST SIDE -- Oh wait, no, it's the opposite.
  22. Um, Indiana's Lake and Porter Counties are part of the Chicago MSA (just as Grandville is part of the Grand Rapids MSA) so you can't have it both ways. That's your geography lesson. And as much as I'd love to take issue with the wondrous aesthetic beauty of driving past the Calumet River & environs, I'll just echo GRDad and advise you not to worry so much.
  23. Oh please. The "first impression" GR people see when driving into Chicago are steel mills. Actually, the best way to view this project is from a distance (not exactly a compliment, but it's true). I don't think it'll look bad from 196.
