EDIT: Moved this reply to the appropriate location.
Thanks, Krazeeboi.

Edit: I replied to a really old post by accident!
Great shots, Spartan.

My partner and I used to eat at Doc's Gumbo Grill weekly and Doug the owner told us Taco-Sushi was taking his place. We commented on how gross the combination of tacos and sushi seemed, but I guess there's a market for it. Doc's incidentally is supposed to be reopening on Rosewood Drive at some point, but I'm not sure it's going to pan out.
There's a Tako-Sushi in greenville...found the menu online.
I think it may actually be pretty good.

You know you're becoming a big city when you have hot dog vendors!
Well, not quite. But still an article that made me happy:

So I'm still on the USC Engineering Mailing list, and I got this interesting email today:
The Engineering Joint Council and the College have worked with Vehicle Management and Parking Services to open up the Horizon Garage to daily parking. The daily rate is $3, and the rules are simple: arrive no earlier than 6:45 am and leave by 10:00 pm (no overnight parking). You take a ticket, park anywhere in the garage, and pay $3 when you leave. Horizon Garage is a three minute walk from Swearingen and 300 Main.I would very much like to encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity; indeed, I challenge you! Between now and Thanksgiving, Parking Services will track the number of daily parking tickets in Horizon Garage and compute a weekly average. The College will multiply this average by 10 and make available that amount of additional funding to Engineering Joint Council for allocation to student professional organizations. If the garage fills regularly with daily users, that could mean up to an extra $3,000 to student organizations.

Why would they put the equipment on that particluar lot when the TIF would cover all of Innovista?
Oh, sorry, I wasn't saying the equipment is related to the TIF. I was just pointing out that's what they have funding for, since I just saw the article today.
I'm as curious as you are as to if the equipment means progress on Horizon II or Discovery II.
-
After all, they have the resources and don't need bank loans to build Horizon II and Discovery II.
Indeed they don't. They apparently will, however, have the money to improve the infrastructure in the area:

I want to buy that pop-up book.

It looks like Columbia could be seeing WiMax in the very near future - ETV's old analog bandwith has been leased to two companies.

Pastides gave a "State of the University" Address yesterday afternoon.
Here's the direct link to the speech:
http://www.sc.edu/specialevents/stateoftheuniversity/
And here's the summary of what he talked about:
-
Abundant availability of parking? I dunno about that.
Compared to other 'urban' campuses, USC does quite well with parking.
Well, if students used the commuter lots, that is, rather than trying to cram an army of cars into the garage closest to their next class.
-
So the universities that participate have some sort of no cars rule (eg: for freshmen) ?
I wouldn't think so...but USC does have a disproportionately large number of Freshman bringing cars, most likely attributed to the combination of a large in state population and the abundant availability of parking.
I was merely suggesting that by limiting the number of cars on campus, not only would the university be able to free up some real estate, but it would also increase the ZipCar user base.
-
Does anyone think USC could support a ZipCar service? Looking at some of the other universities that have the service, it seems like USC would be a good candidate given the more urban nature of the campus.
In order for USC to support a service like this, more students would need to live closer to or on campus, and the University would have to start actively discouraging students from bringing cars.
As it stands right now, I feel like the vast majority of students bring cars with them, which would make ZipCar somewhat redundant.

Parks needs to go. NOW.
The board is meeting today to decide his fate and Roscoe's buyout:

Cool photo. Bates West is hideous. Carolina really needs to refacade it.
Yeah...The colors on it are quite dated and don't match the rest of the university at all.

The "Stay in Columbia" website linked in the article leaves a lot to be desired. I sure hope they spruce it up somewhat.
It's supposedly just for mobile devices, which would make the site passable. It could still use some work though (I'd recommend The State's mobile site for inspiration)
However, if anyone looks at the site from the computer, they're definitely not staying here.

I keep wanting to call you Ronak the Barbarian, but that was Conan, wasn't it?
HAHA, yeah, it was Conan...although there was also a Kronak the barbarian:

I got bored one day and started doing random searches online.

Cupcakes!
A new store on Lincoln Street in the Vista is bringing the national cupcake trend to Columbia. Kristin Kuhlke, who started her first cupcakes-only store in Charleston three years ago, plans to open Cupcake in mid-August, across from the Blue Marlin restaurant.

I have no idea why students would want to live in those complexes off Bluff Road. I'd rather be able to walk to class, Five Points and The Vista.
I totally agree with you.
I lived in University Oaks for a year, and realized how much happier I was in The Lofts at USC Whaley's Mill.

This Article in the Free Times talks about how the economy has created a glut of on campus housing at USC, which I totally disagree with. I'd argue that glut is largely attributable to the plethora of new off campus housing available now, and the willingness of students to pay a premium for said off campus units.
