Exide Technologies to create 200 jobs in Columbus expansion
</H4>ATLANTA - Governor Sonny Perdue announced today that Exide Technologies, a lead-acid battery manufacturer, has received a $34.3 million federal grant and will create up to 200 manufacturing jobs at its location in Columbus. "Exide Technologies is a perfect example of a Georgia-based, innovative company that believes our state is the ideal location to grow and thrive," said Governor Perdue. "Our business-friendly environment, rich intellectual capital and well-trained workforce are continuing to attract green technology companies."Exide Technologies, a 2009 Fortune 1000 company, is based in Milton, a northern suburb of Atlanta.
The $34.3 million grant is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, which supports the domestic production of affordable lead-acid batteries incorporating advanced carbon technology. Exide will manufacture advanced AGM flat plate batteries at its Columbus location. These fuel-saving batteries have numerous industrial and transportation applications. In addition, advanced lead-acid batteries are more cost effective than other battery technologies for many micro-hybrid and no-idle applications. The technology is expected to reduce emissions and U.S. dependence on imported oil.
The company plans to expand their current facility on Joy Road in Columbus to accommodate the new manufacturing line. Exide will use Georgia Quick Start to train its new employees and will also work with the Center of Innovation for Manufacturing.
"Despite the current economic situation, we believe this area of investment can be expected to yield significant benefits including job creation, energy savings and an association with both advanced technology and environmental sustainability," said Gordon Ulsh, President and Chief Executive Officer of Exide Technologies. "Georgia's business-friendly environment and top-notch training makes it a natural fit for this expansion. The convergence of innovative designs, novel carbon-lead hybrid chemistries, and the application of nano technology - all in conjunction with lead-acid technology that has proven itself for more than a century - sets the stage for the delivery of superior energy storage solutions."
"We are excited that our proposal convinced one of our valuable existing companies, Exide Technologies, to select Columbus for this significant expansion project," said Dick Ellis, chairman of the Development Authority of Columbus. The federal grant will provide Exide the ability to accelerate the creation of these new jobs for our citizens over the next three years."
Candice Scott, project manager for the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD) and former project manager Greg Wright assisted the Company in its expansion.
About the company
Exide Technologies, with operations in more than 80 countries, is one of the world's largest producers and recyclers of lead-acid batteries. The company's four global business groups -- Transportation Americas, Transportation Europe and Rest of World, Industrial Energy Americas and Industrial Energy Europe and Rest of World -- provide a comprehensive range of stored electrical energy products and services for industrial and transportation applications.
Transportation markets include original-equipment and aftermarket automotive, heavy-duty truck, agricultural and marine applications, and new technologies for hybrid vehicles and automotive applications. Industrial markets include network power applications such as telecommunications systems, electric utilities, railroads, photovoltaic (solar-power related) and uninterruptible power supply (UPS), and motive-power applications including lift trucks, mining and other commercial vehicles.

It's going to be some type of oil change place, that's what the Publix manager told me.
That sucks, been nice to have a restaurant there.
-
What are they building in front of the Publix by Shaw High to the right of Zaxby's? They have started grading the land.
-
When does the new YMCA downtown open?
-
Maybe there will actually be something to talk about with regards to major transportation projects in Columbus now that a local boy is in charge of the DOT. Below is the LE article on Vance Smith moving into the position has head of DOT.
This should be a big win for Columbus and the region. Hopefully a lot more projects will happen now, especially the 4-laning of Veterans Pwky and the proposed I-14 and I-185 projects.

As of now the plans for the Phenixian are still a go the statments you are reffering to came from pc mayor Coulter he only made a guess which was ignorant on his part he never spoke with gilley properties. J.W. Brannen Pc's riverfront econmic development director told the east alabama citizen the project is still a go and RGP has devoted millions already to securing the land needed to build the high rise condo. Plus their company is still doing fairly well they are building a multimillion dollar complex near Dothan
Any word on when construction might begin?

Where is corporate ridge? Being new to the area I have no idea where most stuff is (especially it is not near my little neighborhood). I tried googling it and got nothing
It is out in East Columbus. There are a lot of manufacture companies out that way. Big industrial parks, etc. It is off of Woodruff Road.

The former Panasonic building in corporate ridge will be the home to the new manufacter center. The building has been vacant for nearly 2 years and has a total of 340,000 sq. ft. of space. The company has begun the hiring process already hoping to employ up to 200 people in Columbus by the end of the year and as many as 875 within the next 5 years. This is such great news for for Georgia and especially Columbus as more high tech jobs continue to be created in this market.
Definitely great news! Big wins for both Columbus and Atlanta! Both cities continue to lead the way with major corporate HQ's!

I would like to see the old Raymond Rowe building razed. That corner on Broadway would be perfect for a mixed-use project. Any word on what the plans are for that building?

The last round of layoffs at Synovus laid off Columbus employees leaving Atlanta employees to take over duties. Columbus Leadership must start doing things that will attract new employers. Supporting I-14, I22 and/or I-185 expansion. Supporting living options that young urban dwellers want to live in. Because, it's likely as banks begin to recover, a massive merger and acquisition season will set off and Synovus and TSYS are ripe.
If anthing, TSYS will gobble up someone else. Synovus might be more vulnerable, but I am sure it will be fine.

That will be an amazing addition to CSU! When will construction begin?

Mike and eds bbq is building a new north columbus location on Warm Springs rd near schomburg road where the coko deli was once located

I am 25, and I majored in Real Estate from UGA. Columbus is developing itself much better than the other 2nd tier cities. Our amenities are so much better than what you would find in other 2nd tier cities. We have only seen the tip of the iceberg on what this city has planned. I have seen plans for the additional phases of CPC, it is going to be amazing. It has been postponed unfortunately due to the economy.

New Retail Center for North Columbus: Veterans Commons
Great Beginnings Child Care, Mongo Grill set for Old Moon Road corner
A supersized child-care center and a restaurant specializing in Asian stir-fry are coming to a retail and service center in north Columbus.
This is part of the first phase of Veterans Commons, now under construction on six acres of land at the northeast corner of Veterans Parkway and Old Moon Road.
Great Beginnings Child Care is locating inside its own 14,000-square-foot building on the back side of the property. The company is looking for a second in south Columbus near Fort Benning.
Fronting Veterans Commons, meanwhile, is a 15,000-square-foot shopping center that will be anchored by a restaurant called Mongo Grill. The eatery, which will seat 160, should open by June.
Guests are allowed to choose from an array of meat, vegetables and spices, then watch as the dish is cooked in a large grill over high heat. It essentially customizes the meal by offering a large number of flavor combinations.
Columbus-based Allen Development Group is constructing Veterans Commons. Company President Bud Allen said the first phase covers three of the six acres.
More space available
After Mongo Grill moves in to the initial phase, there will be room for four more tenants, mostly small retail and serviced oriented.

A new CVS is going some where in South Columbus (don't know the location as of yet), it may be somewhere along Levy Road.
Also, a Dollar Tree is set to go in the place of Fred's next to Hobby Lobby in the near future.
Where did you hear the information on the CVS?

Definitely a nice addition to the area. Wish something would be done with the old Firehouse club down the street. That's such a nice piece of real estate.
-
Einstein Bros. Bagels has opened a store on Columbus State University's campus. Einstein's is very popular in the Atlanta area.
-
The nightlife of Columbus is already lame and getting worse. Whenever the city does catch some good nightspots some of our not so uppy residents tend to mess them up for everyone which results in the city trying to limit those types of venues in the city.
I think the nighlife has picked up. FlipsFlops downtown is nice. There is also one in Statesboro, GA and Atlanta. Columbus nighlife is definitely getting better.

GA DOT Commissioner Evans said this morning at a Chamber breakfast in Lagrange that the limited access highway (aka I-14) between Augusta and Columbus was a high priority for her administration.
Excellent news

That is unreal! I just got done reading about it. That is a HUGE fire! I am just glad nobody was living there. Were there plans to do anything with it? I think that mill was once one of the largest in the country.

Does anyone know what the current status is for the widening of Veterans and adding a median where it crosses Whittlesey? Is Whittlesey also going to be widened with a median? Thanks!
Whittlesey will be widened between Whitesville Road and Veterans, but I am not sure if it will have a median. It is supposed to start soon too.

I heard from the owner of Five Guys Burgers & Fries here in Macon that his next location would be in Columbus. He didn't say where it was, but he did say he has a place for it.
I believe it will be in Columbus Park Crossing somewhere. That's what I have heard.

Bill Heard's closing it's Columbus dealership costing 350 jobs.
Sears repair center closing, no word on numbers of jobs lost.
Rumor mill says Synovus' number is much bigger than reported.
Wachovia is looking for a buyer.
Some good news... Kia 2nd, 3rd and 4th tier suppliers will begin announcing soon. Will produce about the same number of jobs already announced in the region - 8000 to 10,000. Lagrange only has limited space left for maybe a quarter of those. Maybe Columbus can pick up some. Harris just opened an industrial park and Cusseta AL, just down I-85 still has room. The interstate corridor probably as the best shot at them.
Sear's repair center is just moving to the North Columbus Sears. I don't think any jobs are being lost.

I saw these pics highlighting downtown Columbus' streetscape improvements. Its been so long since I've been there, I didn't really remember what the downtown looked like.
