  1. Bad news today the Books a million store in cross country plaza will be closing on APril 15th for good. The developer says a new store will be coming to the location but is not releasing any details yet as to which one

Books stores like that will be a thing of the past soon....sad but no loss IMO. Just look at Borders. Glad to hear it will be replaced by something.

  2. Ledger Enquirer has announced in the paper and online that the new Chik Fil A is going in this development and is set to open in May with Truett Cathy's, Chik Fil A's founder, grandson operating the store! Cant wait to see what else is developed here. This has great potential.

The Swift site is a perfect location for a Bass Pro. Home Depot would be a nice addition to the area too.

  3. Development news is kind of slow right now.... So, here's some boring stuff:

    - Man Power is moving or opening a new office in the old Quizno's off of Bradley Park Drive

Anyone know what is happening next to Starbucks on Veterans? They're clearing the land there. More parking? Another business?

Glad to see that space being used. Not sure what is happening by that Starbucks. It is an odd shaped parcel, but big enough for something hopefully.

  4. Has anyone heard any plans for the JD Kinder Furniture site at Manchester and Armour Rd as it closes? It's a great location. Could be an Academy Sports or another hotel.

It would be a good place for a hotel, but not sure if it would get approved since it is in the flight path of the airport. Academy Sports would be nice if the parcel is large enough.

Any idea how many local jobs that means? Any corporate jobs? The real local hurt will come when Synovus is bought by another bank. Too many believe that Synovus is so weakened it is now a takeover subject. The Ledger reported it over the weekend, and BizJournals reported it back in June '10 as noted in one of the comments.

I have heard 250 in Columbus with the rest coming from around the Southeast. This was from an executive I know at TSYS.

  6. How many residential units in this again? It's a real shame the developer isn't including any live/work units. They have a real opportunity to do some ground-up loft-style living unis. Koonce's place does include live/work units.

Koonce Place Architects: HighGrove Partners, Austell, Ga. (site plan); Historical Concepts, Peachtree City, Ga. (residential design). Completion: 2011. Brief: Includes 700 homes and 44 multifamily residences. Image below:

Rezoning info from the Columbus Planning Office:

REZN 5-10-4247: A request to rezone 280.4 acres located at Veterans Parkway and Williams

Road. The current zoning is Single Family Residential 1, General Commercial and Planned Unit

Development. The proposed zoning is Planned Mixed Unit Development. The property will be

used for commercial, live/work and retail. Genevieve Green of the Woodruff Company is the

applicant. Council District 2 - Glenn Davis.

Koonce Place is an opportunity for Columbus to really step it up. Having done development in Atlanta, this is something I have wished for Columbus for years. I hope this comes to reality!

  7. $22M development in works for Columbus

Alabama-based Homecorp Inc. to build two apartment complexes, neighborhood center in Columbus; company also building apartment complex in Opelika

Two apartment complexes and a neighborhood shopping center are on the drawing board for the Columbus and east Alabama area.

Montgomery, Ala.-based Homecorp Inc. said Friday it has started construction of a 292-unit luxury apartment complex on 22 acres of land at 8160 Veterans Parkway.Developer Ben Billings said he’s close to beginning construction on a 12,000-square-foot neighborhood strip center on 1.7 acres near the intersection of Blackmon and Warm Springs roads. The center is already 60 percent pre-leased

  8. Developers Seeking Rezoning Approval for Midland Downs Project off Macon Road

125-acre project to offer single-family homes, apartments, small commercial area

Two Columbus developers are planning a 125-acre, mixed-use development in the northeast panhandle area of Columbus. It is to be called Midland Downs.

The project, located off Macon Road between the Pratt & Whitney and Precision Components International plants, will be a blend of single-family residents and apartments, along with a small commercial area.

The project includes 242 single-family homes and about 200 multi-family units that would be accessed via a road that is now being built on the north side of the property to connect Macon Road with Garrett Road. The city and developers are splitting the cost of the $2 million road, which will run a mile from Garrett to Macon.

  9. Oh and does anybody know when the multi million dollar with the woodruff company is going to get started if im correct its going to be in south columbus.I watched the columbus city coucil meeting online last week and it was supposed to be approved by city council in two weeks does anybody know if it got approved i pretty sure it did because all the city council were pleased, excited and amazed by it.

It was approved. First part includes building a road. I doubt you will see any dirt moving until at least next summer if not later than that.

  10. columbus doesn't have a kroger at all?that's crazy,macon has 7 kroger's

Did years ago. Definitely a Publix dominated market.

Video Warehouse is being torn down to make way for the new CVS. It will be moving to a new location. This will all happen within 1 year according to the manager at Video Warehouse. \

Also, what is going in by the Publix on Schomburg Road down by the Zaxby's? All of that land is being cleared.

  11. Wow... you make really great points. You explain a lot of things I have been having a difficult time understanding. So basically if we were to factor out Fort Benning, Columbus city population numbers would be more like 140,000 versus nearly +/- 192,000? Columbus has spread out SO much over the years... its unbearably frustrating to always have to drive to the other side of town for everything.

Same could be said for any city. What would Atlanta be without the airport? Columbus has a diverse economy. Home to big companies like Aflac. TSYS, Synovus, Carmike Cinemas, large medical base, Blue Cross Blue of Shied of Georgia, etc. Fort Benning does is a huge factor for Columbus, but the city does have other major businesses to keep it going. No other city in the state can say that.

  12. WHITEWATER NEWS AT LAST!!!!

WBRL reported that financining in the amount of $23 million has finally been obtained for the whitewater project. The Chamber of Commerce will have official announcement in May or June. But seems that a contractor has already been employed and ground-breaking (actually, dam-breaking) will be in early 2011. Preliminarily, will be 2-mile course and one of few urban whitewater routes in the entire country. This has been a LONG time coming and hope that it comes off. Could be tipping point that makes DT a weekend destination for ATL, B'ham, etc -- much like the aquarium was in Chattanooga. Meanwhile fund raising continues with a view towards making course a premier route drawing national attendees. Can go to WRBL website for video report which includes interview with CofC head, as well as mockups of course and old 14th St bridge in its new pedestrian iteration.

I sure hope this creates more buzz along the riverwalk. A nice high-rise hotel would be nice down there. Hopefully this course will become nationally known one day.

  13. Three new developments proposed for Columbus - One is a 300 unit apartment complex at Buena Vista Rd (Columbus Planning Dept report here). Amazingly, the Planning department recommended against it. Luckily, the planning commission recommended for it. What's more amazing, is the Councilors representing South Columbus seem to be opposing it. It's astonishing that especially Mimi Woodson who is always complaining that no new stores are locating to South Columbus. They're not locating because there's not enough market. You need developments like this one to generate a market. Back to the Columbus Planning Department. Good planning is recognized for a mixture of uses. You don't put ALL houses in this area, ALL apartments in this area and ALL jobs in this area. That's what creates sprawl and forces longer and longer commutes. Their future land use map is more like a current land use map. There's no imagination or vision of what a future might look like. For that reason, it's a shame that the Council and planners put so much emphasis on the map.

Not to mention that no one on the Council seems to have gotten the memo that there has been a Housing Bust. It's very hard for people to get easy loans now. So more people are seeking apartment living. Many people are more suited to apartment living. Many people, especially older people can't maintain a single-family home. Some one should educate the planning staff and Council on demographics associated with apartment dwellers. They often do live in their units for as long or longer than single-family units and have median incomes higher than their single-family neighbors.

    These get approved?
