CLT Airport will begin the next portion of major construction of the Terminal Lobby Expansion (TLE) project: CLT Canopy Installation. This project is slated to begin at 10:00pm on September 27th, 2022 and continue through October 12th, 2022.  The UPPER LEVEL roadway/ Departures will be closed during this time period. The project is anticipated to cause several significant impacts to our roadways and curbside operations.

The Smoking Area will relocate to the east end of the Departures Level

Following the two-week closure, the Departures Level will close nightly for the duration of the Canopy Installation

    18-month duration
    10:00pm to 4:00am nightly

Not sure if anyone has brought this up yet but I have heard from a pretty reliable source that we will be getting a Flagship First Lounge in the near future. I have no other details other than that unfortunately.

All I know for certain is that C/D club will close - AGAIN - next year for a complete overhaul (I was told the space would be completely reconfigured and that showers would be added).

Can we just stop for a minute and make note of the only reason the club closed this time is because it failed its fire safety inspection. The space was built in 1999...in an airport surrounded by airplanes and trucks and tugs that all use petroleum...WITHOUT A SPRINKLER SYSTEM!!! How does something like that occur? Seriously!

It's also been hinted that once Delta moves into its new space, A concourse will get a small club. The airline's true pain point, the endless confusing cluster that is E, will still be without a club, relying only on the C/D space.

Other than looking at the buildings... what are you doing at the Legacy Union site that is different than what you can do around First Ward? Right now both are dead zones. I guess one can open a checking account and get a coffee at Legacy Union.... around First Ward Park you can sign up for Google Fiber and go to Owen's Bagels. Sit by the fountain for a bit. The park itself is decent and elevates that area above Legacy IMO. Outside of parks though, both are kind of dull dead zones.

I really hope retail comes to Legacy Union sooner rather than later and they can attract some appealing tenants.

You can't even open a bank account. The BofA Tower doesn't have a branch.

    Perhaps.

At the same time, the devil's advocate in me thinks that the Frankfurt flight likely performs better than the Munich flight, but AA is not willing to risk the loss of corporate contracts on the Munich flight, which are likely crucial to the flight's survival, especially as they are a new entrant into the market and there is a competitor who has had consistent service for almost 20 years on the route now.

There is no competitor to AA's CLT-Frankfurt flight (and it's far too late in the season for Lufthansa to introduce their own flight to Frankfurt...I doubt they would want to anyways), corporate contracts are likely far less important, and US/AA has been on the route now consistently going back to the 1990s, so it can likely afford to anger a few corporate clients for a few months, especially given that long-haul business travel is still down.

Delta has actually discontinued their Atlanta-Stuttgart service. It's supposed to resume this Fall IIRC.

The airline told crews that the reason the service was suspended was a combination of too few widebodies and  slot issues at LHR. Don't use the slot, lose it. FRA isn't slot-controlled, so there's no worry about losing the route. The 777-200 in question will now fly MIA-LHR. CLT-FRA is scheduled to resume in the fall.

With the exception of Air Canada, every foreign flag carrier I've flown (which isn't an extensive list but is a set >5: British, Turkish, EVA, Thai, Lufthansa, SAS) offer a better hard and soft product that AA or United. Delta is close. Given my druthers, I would always choose a foreign carrier over any US carrier. The ambivalence US airlines feel toward their passengers (driven by flyers flying almost solely by price) is reflected in the diminishing level of service or "here to there with no flair" as I prefer to think of it on US flagged carriers.

Hmmmm. I beg to differ. While I've always had decent service on foreign carriers, my Air France premium economy seat (A380) was a torture device and my intra-Europe coach seat had 29" pitch with no recline (A320), my BA biz class seat didn't lie flat (B777) and my BA intra-Europe flight (B737) featured no amenities that were free (had to buy a Diet Coke), my Lufthansa biz class seat was so hot I couldn't sleep and the airplane had no air vents (not to mention that the monitor was stationary and the only way to watch a film was to be in the upright position (A340). I'll take jetBlue any day of the week over any of them.

    this is not good....

Charlotte Fire is responding to a kitchen fire in the Atrium area. Passengers have been safely removed from the Atrium area to the concourses. The roadway in front of the Terminal is currently closed to traffic for emergency crews.

Charlotte Fire is responding to a situation in the Atrium. At this time, passengers are being moved away from the Atrium.

    from twitter

sources tell WBT radio it was a fire at the Burger King

Terminal is reopening in the next 30 minutes. Sad this is what it takes to get a remodel at the BK.

  7. Flying in yesterday, I noticed the girders for the canopy are being delivered to the staging site off Wilkinson Blvd.

In other news, I finally got a reply from the airport about D & E remodeling. Earth-shattering:

Renovations in the terminal are ongoing.  Concourse D and Concourse E will receive similar improvements as Concourses A, B and C.  Improvements will include new gate seating with integrated power outlets and USB charging outlets, new terrazzo flooring in the walkway corridor, wall finishes, new ceilings and new public address system.

We recognize that this does not change your experience and hope that these upcoming renovations will improve your experience.

It's still Jerry World at CLT. His lackluster attention to detail and upkeep are his legacy--one that is, apparently, here to stay.

If they really made cosmetic changes to the terrazzo as a result of your email, that's amazing they are responsive to customer feedback.

At the same time, if the sanding was only done as a result of customer feedback (and not by some internal quality control team), it's somewhat concerning that the airport/city is willing to just accept and overlook the poor state of repair of ___ (insert terrazzo, rest rooms, etc)...when clearly they have the means and financial resources to correct a half-ass job.

It's amazing just how much worse the flooring is on C compared to A and B. And I still don't understand (and can't get an answer from the airport) as to why carpeting, signage, and seating haven't been upgraded on D and E.

As for what *might* be the airport's response to my email, I took photos and attached them to my message--that's really the only reason I think someone actually read it (the re-sanding was being done only to the sections from the images I sent).

I see your point but I disagree. In some airports, the customers really are the local citizens. Charlotte airport, American Airlines is really the customer.

Dallas is a metropolitan area of 7.6 Million people with 23 Fortune 500 Headquarters. Charlotte has 8.

The other American hubs are at New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington, Miami & Phoenix, Philadelphia. They have to compete with quality in most of those markets. It’s more important to invest in facilities in those markets, you’re competing for local share. If United offers a superior product (both inflight and at the airport) - why wouldn’t a business traveler prefer United if United also flew to the same destinations and the same frequency? That dynamic isn’t as pronounced in Charlotte. Business travelers don’t have an alternative and are captive to American (unless they don’t care about connecting which most do.)

Though that’s just my opinion. I’m not sure Americans thoughts. But it’s my hunch of why Charlotte’s renovations are just gold rather than great like say RDU’s terminal.

I think CLT airport looks fine. Not fancy and no wow factor but I thought it looked better than most.

I've been in Third World airports that have cleaner restrooms than CLT.
