Huh? CLT has way more service than RDU

RDU-KEF is seasonal (and not daily) on a narrow body and Icelandair serves connections over its KEF hub onward to Europe. DL flies to CDG and connects to its partner Air France for onward connections. AA has their long standing flight to LHR. LH has the yet to start flight to its FRA hub (not daily). And that’s all the service they have to Europe. All of these carriers are relying on onward connections to other destinations in Europe or elsewhere

From CLT, AA operates daily service to 3x LHR (2x year round) and MAD with a partner on the other end for connections beyond plus MUC (year round), FRA, DUB, CDG, and FCO all on 777s. Plus LH serves their MUC hub. There is essentially zero untapped local demand for another carrier to go after. And there’s no reason for BA or IB to take over flights from AA because it’s more efficient to route AA’s planes over the massive hub and base than for the European partners to send a single plane that could be used on a different spoke.

I know all of this. My point was that RDU actually seeks out new airlines to service the airport. And exactly where is the demand from the Triangle to KEF and how would CLT be any different?

Because it’s an AA megahub with little to no local demand and AA already serves all the hubs of the European flag carriers.

Is it? RDU has Icelandair to KEF and Delta to CDG? CLT has seasonal service to CDG and AA offers no service to Iceland at all.

RDU has way more international arrivals. I arrived from Iceland and was stuck at customs for 1.5 hours because a LHR flight had just arrived before us and they only had two people processing.  Now have my Global Entry card, yay!

I said "were." That's why I asked the question as to why RDU has gotten so much new service from foreign flag carriers, but CLT hasn't.

For years I have been saying that CLT lacks any sort of air service development program - but based on this PDF, I am happy to say I am wrong.

The document is relatively new and is really well written. I am hoping this means the City will start being more aggressive into marketing itself to new entrants.

I often wonder if the reason CLT has failed to attract additional international carriers is the fact our CBP processing is already so constrained? It's a pretty miserable arrival experience. I've never entered RDU from outside the USA, but I can only assume their customs area was under-utilized, seeing as that its only international arrivals were LHR and CDG.

CLT is now taking bids for Concourse A Phase 3...this will be a 7 gate add on to Concourse A Phase 2 which will open up in about 6 months. Any speculation on who will go in here?

Oh good lord! Just go ahead and build a new headhouse and rename all this Terminal 1!

If Mary Shelley were alive today, she could easily write a book about CLT and call it "Frankenport."

I believe that was/is a proposal at 2101 Randolph, right beside their 2109 Randolph office building. You can see it grayed-out in the background on the last rendering. Not sure if accurate, but Google shows the existing building as an AT&T substation, temporarily closed (135 N Chase St).

    https://www.bbm-arch.com/project/charlotte-pipe-and-foundry-mews/

I'm unsure if CP&F plans to retain 2109 Randolph, with their new 520 Providence project. Probably not.

They're not leaving Randolph. The new building is for R&D, as well as a showroom for their products.

Providence and Fairview - a short story.

not sure when this aerial is from, but gives a good overview of these two developments.

Every time I drive past that site, I think to myself, "That'd make a great park. Wonder who owns it."

At least now I know it'll probably not be redeveloped in my lifetime.

In other aviation news, the Alaska Air Group (AAG)  announced today that it would acquire Hawaiian Airlines (HA). It's a somewhat sad day for the people of Hawaii, as HA is essentially public transportation there. While the AAG said it would keep the HA brand and its services separate (much like how Lufthansa owns Swiss and Austrian Airlines, or how Air France and KLM are owned by the same parent company), there will no doubt be BOH layoffs at HA HQ in Honolulu due to acquisition-related synergies. I expect the Hawaii AG to file a lawsuit blocking the acquisition shortly and attempt to get a promise by the AAG to maintain inter-island service.

I bring this up as someone had texted me about an hour ago on whether this increases CLT's chances to regain service to Honolulu, especially now as HNL will be a oneworld hub. The answer IMO is no. AA/DL/UA largely operate their U.S. mainland-Hawaii networks at a loss - the fact that flights are expensive to operate, Hawaii is low-yielding, and profit margins are low. Right now all carriers are selling walk-up tickets for LAX-HNL tomorrow for only $120.

AA simply has better, more profitable places to use a 777 on from CLT than a route that would be low-yielding and largely filled by folks redeeming miles.

You're missing one important detail, though: Hawaiian operates a hub at HNL and offers connecting service to Japan, Polynesia, Micronesia, Korea, New Zealand, and Australia. From the merger website:
    • Strategic Honolulu hub: Honolulu will become a key Alaska Airlines hub, enabling greater international connectivity for West Coast travelers throughout the Asia-Pacific region with onestop service through Hawai‘i.

I have to assume that Hawaiian's code share with jetBlue is soon to be history.

The midfield expansion also looks like it could be done in phases as needed.

I agree. With the closure and demo of the crosswind runway, the land will br readily available for a mid-field gate complex, while keeping the current concourses operational until construction is complete..

Our own 550 Brevard uses red letters…

Which one is Wells Fargo main?  We might be talking the same building. The 12 story annex attached to 2 Wells?

WF Main is the original 12-story First Union HQ on Tryon. It opened in 1954. Although it's connected to Two Wells Fargo, it's considered a separate structure and (was) entirely occupied by the bank.

Three towers, that’s news to me, since I work for that company in uptown with them…

they exited 1 Wells and 2 wells, and went into their new 600,000 sqft in Duke Energy. They still have 3 wells which they have spent a bunch to renovate the interior, and 550 brevard, which is very nice.

Well Fargo Main is also being emptied. The department I support is there. Only the branch remains.

This is a company that is trying to bring its employees back into uptown to fill vacancies, and working to transform one of its old buildings into residential rather than leave it empty. The employee 30k people with high wages in Charlotte, and are first thought is immediately no? To a building they have owned for close to 20 years?

this is some NIMBY crap in a different form. I love you all but you should do some self reflection

The same company that’s exiting three towers to push everyone to University City?
