When I was shopping at Meijer yesterday I overheard two managers, one of them I think was the store director because of the suit, talking about how Meijer was buying land in the U.P.

According to the article they are doing it with two stores in Columbus also. I wonder if they are going to mothball the stores and reopen them if conditions in the areas around the closing stores improve?

The one at the store in Hampton Township outside of Bay City started to get built then construction suddenly stopped and nothing new has happened with it for a couple of months. I wonder if it was to be controlled by the same company?

If I remember correctly at first they were going to be in the million sq. ft. retail center, then when that did not go through they went and proposed a store on a different piece of land that was across the street that was not part of the million sq. ft. retail center. 223,000 sq. ft. sounds rather large for a Meijer store. Currently the largest they are building are about 192,000 sq.ft. and before that they were building their stores at about 207,000 sq. ft.. I wonder if the square footage they are stating includes both the gas station and the outdoor part of the garden center?
