  2. http://www.heraldsun.com/news/x1736885590/Tower-developer-gets-OK-to-disassemble-building-walls uh oh. the walls they wanted to preserve are useless. still moving forward though, it appears.
  3. more downtown durham j davis pretty sure the crescent main st is j davis too. The J Davis facebook page has The Whetsone mentioned as well.
  4. wake is just a couple of years behind if they move forward. latest update http://www.newsobserver.com/2014/11/16/4327996_raleigh-cary-look-to-improve-rail.html?rh=1 Pro light rail candidates swepts the Wake board of commissioners so everybody expecting movement there. By 2016 a referendum is expected to be put to the voters regarding a sales tax increase to start collecting for the project as was similarly passed in recent years in Durham and Orange counties.
  5. unfortunately this is false. durham has about six mega new apartment complexes going up that look pretty much like this J Davis specialty that you can't miss when driving down 147. and (j davis) 9th st:
  6. There are a tremendous number of people employed by both UNC Hostpitals and Duke Medical Center. Parking at either site is incredibly limited and difficult. It really isn't difficult seeing tons of support for the hospital employees alone for this plan. It looks like there are roughtly 30,000 employees combined between the main Duke Hosptial, University, and research locations alone. That number will surely be much higher in ten, twenty, thirty years. Again, parking is limited as it is and seeing Duke and UNC incentivize the use of the rail line woudn't be a stretch at all. The question about being in too many major roads is unavoidable if Chapel Hill is to be included which with the vast number of people there as well, it obviously has to be. How you connect UNC hospital to other parts of Chapel Hill is worth discussing, but this line probably wouldn't make as much sense spreading through Orange county more than it does with the lower population numbers that way. Durham has been planning around these proposed stops for years and I have no doubt that it would be a smashing success in the Duke/downtown corridor. It won't be too long before there are tens of thousands of new residents living virtually on top of these stations. As the city continue to grow from its core, interior traffic and parking will continue to get more and more difficult and more and more alternatives will be welcomed. I see the Durham portion of this to look great. I'm less certain how the Chapel Hill section will work, but the parking limitations alone at the University and hospital makes me think that down the road this will be quite popular. Like most everybody else, seeing this go to the RTP is the most glaring need. Interested to see what Wake Country does there.
  7. according to this: http://www.indyweek.com/news/archives/2014/04/22/durham-city-council-approves-incentives-for-new-skyscraper-renovation-of-jack-tar-motel-buildings-downtown there is supposed to be underground parking. So what I saw was a crew and what looked like some kind of foundation drill. One would assume they aren't drilling a foundation if they have to dig out a hole for a garage, so my initial report may not have been entirely correct. What is indeed certain, however, is that a crew was on site with a big machine doing something. It seems pretty clear that this is happening. This will be virtually itentical to the Durham Centre building's height in feet, but it's up the hill from the Durham Centre so it will certainly stand out a dominating feature on the skyline.
  8. The Liberty Warehouse is gone (block next to Surf Club, Motoco, Fullsteam). A few of the old walls are left. Looks like another mega apartment complex is on its way.
  9. couldn't believe my eyes when i saw this, but it looks like foundation work has begun today on this the tower site.
  10. that's a pretty neat urban shot with a lot going on. that little train you guys have is so cute!
  11. there's quite a bit of detail on the video from the official website http://www.1bankofamericacenter.com/ it seems like i've watched this before, but i don't recall seeing so much. sorry if this is not news to some of you, but this is about as good of a look of the winter garden as i could imagine.
  12. Does anybody remember the John Locke foundation study from a few years back that said nobody would ride a train in the triangle and recommended more highways? How people couldn't see this oil crisis coming when all the evidence has been here is beyond me. But I'll agree that I'm not going to hold my breath for a plan that points toward 30 years from now. Funding these types of projects should be a matter of national security if nothing else and worthy of Federal funding, not something that should be slashed out of the budgets.
  13. I think we all should write our local congressmen to have a webcam installed dedicated to this project.
  14. how exciting. the new catalyst webcam doubles as a wachovia cam.
  15. I'm pretty sure that I'm unhappy with your attitude. If pointing out that building the DBAP at 10,000 rather than 15,000+, thus preventing it from hosting certain events when Raleigh will never have a baseball stadium means I'm unhappy with everything, then I guess you're right. Have you been to the park since DVII has gone up? The skyline is gone. They're taking the Durham out of the DBAP. But hey, if you're Capital Broadcasting, build away! You're getting some great rent prices while the rest of downtown flounders.
  16. 30,000? Who said anything about 30,000? As an aside, I think the new Diamond View building behing the blue monster has really diminished some of the charm that the DBAP once had. Now the view of the city is blocked and it is so enclosed that the air circulation doesn't seem to be what is was, making hot days and nights there even hotter.
  17. The DBAP isn't nearly big enough to host that event. Heck, it isn't really big enough to do what it does. I'll never understand why they built a brand new AAA stadium with such a low seating capacity, especially considering that Raleigh will never have a competing team.
  18. There was no suggestion that the business component shouldn't exist. The suggestion is that prime walkable space is occupied by these businesses preventing potential visitors from visiting.
  19. I agree completely. Most of the ground level locations are off limits to the general public. It is all very pretty, but honestly, there's not much reason to head down that direction save a couple of restaurants. It feels kind of like a businessey downtown kind of district that is there for just that. I live very close to that location and very rarely find myself in that area. But it sure is pretty!
  20. I wonder if permission was obtained before those photos were taken.
