  1. Virgin America to launch Orlando service next week

Virgin America says it will launch service from California to Orlando, Fla., on Wednesday.

The airline said Friday it would operate daily nonstop flights between Orlando and Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Virgin plans a red carpet welcome for passengers on a celebratory flight from Los Angeles Oct. 13. Local officials and Richard Branson of minority investor Virgin Group are scheduled to greet the plane at Orlando International Airport.

yeah, i'm actually booked on a VA fight for thanksgiving day. i bought it a few months ago. was surprised to see the fares even existed, much less affordable and available!

wow. i haven't posted on here in ages. i guess thinking of coming home for t-day (and the FSU/uf game) :alc: made me come back and see how things were. good to see some new blood!

  2. Nickel's Alley was on the south side of Amelia just east of the RR tracks.

It was right across Amelia from Southeast Steel & The Hub.

Northwest corner of the Pizutti block.

then i guess thats the same building as Electric Ave. i just remember another bar across the street, that i thought might have been Nickel's Alley. anyone remember what that bar was called?

  3. I remember going to Nickel's Alley, which later on became a teen club, the name escapes me now......and when that closed down, the club Visage opened up off of Clarcona and OBT which was a new wave club, I remember going there and also "Spit" night at club Park Ave. on Mondays and Wednesdays. Park Ave was located on Lake Fairview on OBT. Spit was popular from the early to late 80's. I've also looked at lots of microfilm at OPL......I think I remember Orange Buick being in the Pizutti block, it wasn't very big, it seems like almost all car dealerships were downtown. I think the building of West Colonial, which was the first really wide boulevard with lots of property on each side is what attracted the car dealerships. I also remember the Montgomery Ward store on West Colonial where the OCSherrif's dept is located now. I know there was another Ward's at Interstate Mall in Altamonte, but I can't remember if there was a Montgomery Ward in Orlando before west Colonial. I believe the downtown Sears was located on Robinson, but not quite sure. I know it was off of Orange a bit.....

ok, i know i'm waaaaaaaaaaaay after the fact on this conversation, but i've just been through a horrible two week move process and finally have time to catch up on my forums! ugh. i won't comment on anything previously posted (even though it was a great read, you guys really know your retail history!) but i will help metrowester out on one thing. the teen club that went in on Amelia that you were thinking of, was called Electric Ave. and had a very devout crowd. it was the first place i started "hanging out" at. i remember seeing my first concert there (Love & Rockets: the Bubblemen tour). i also remember hearing about the fights that would happen because the hip/hop kids owned saturday night and the punks owned friday night. i think that is what led to it catching fire and the owners moving it out to claricona and renaming it. but i actually think Nickel's Alley might have been across the street from Electric Ave.

anyway, thanks for taking me down memory lane!

  4. The price of premium here in South Beach has already hit $4.23/gallon so I wouldn't be surprised to see $5 by the end of the year.

count your blessings, premium in LA has hit $4.85. i know its all relevant.

  5. this discussion, while certainly vibrant and full of interesting insight, does NOT belong in this thread! would someone please move this over to the "things i'd like to see downtown" thread so we can keep this "orlando pics"

    call me a purest.

  6. Calm down. Breathe. This isn't an affront to anyone. Feel better now?

I am still noticing a huge amount of city envy here. City isn't about size or importance. It is about feel and attitude. Even the core of downtown Orlando is huge compared to many smaller cities. It has more restaurants and shops than some cities. No one is disputing that. But for some reason those in Downtown seem too eager to get more more more. Why? It's not helping. I would rather see one really cool large bookstore, one really great independent grocer, a really cool shop no one else has than a hundred chain stores. I would rather one really individual, totally unlike anywhere else block of cafes than miles of run of the mill restaurants. I want vibe. I want to know I am in a city, not just in a n area with big buildings. I don't need lots of green space, I don't need fancy homes or even fancy people. that is not Urban. Urban people aren't all fancy and rich. Urban is all kinds of people. Urban is all kinds of places, and always new stuff to explore.

Anotherwords, it's time to get away from focusing on growth and start focusing on details and diversity.

i agree on everything but the "green space" thing. many urban places are very green. atlanta is the first one that comes to mind. seattle is another. you fly into either and its trees trees everywhere. and i love seeing pics of those cities as well as orlando rising about the trees. i've lived in both of these places and can vouch for the fact that they are very urban yet keep their "greenness" i think the last thing orlando needs to do is start clearing out its green for the sake of becoming more urban.

but i don't want to take away from your other points. lets keep the chain crap outta the core so we can develop a real character.

  7. I just read in the Watermark Magazine that a Hamburger Mary's Rest will be opening up on the old Too Jay's spot in April 08.. anybody have the inside track?

if so, that is a really odd place for Hamburger Mary's. all the other ones out here on the west coast are the the gaytto and even some of those haven't been able to survive. i just don't see the tourists and mainstream suburbanites who will be visiting church st. feeling comfortable having dinner during drag queen bingo.

that being said, orlando's gay scene is so sporadic right now that bring a hamburger mary's in is a great idea. but there is no way a gay neighborhood right downtown is going to happen!

  8. I saw it last night. They definitely had the Magic on it. It's pretty cool, but you really can't see enough detail to see what teams are playing (unless you know ahead of time) and you obviously can't hear anything. And it's moving. Still cool in concept.

so its like the new mini video ipod then?

  9. I think what you saw is another retail section of the Uptown project. More than just moving dirt, it's legitimate construction starting, and will be an additional 100,000 or so square feet of retail.

I think the Park Towers, like many other high rise condo projects, are on hold. They were supposed to break ground the end of 2006.

There's already a Kohls in Altamonte Springs, at the intersection of 434 and 436.

ummm. i was being a fecicious.

  10. Something I whipped up real quick. Quality is a little weak, it was my first time messing with the video compressions for YouTube.

great vid! cool music...soundtrack info please?

the best thing about watching any videos on youtube about orlando right now is you still get the side option of watching more videos showing beyonce falling on her face at the "old-rena" :yahoo:
